PHIL 104 Midterm Exam Study Guide The following should be used as a guide to assist you in your studying for the Midterm Exam. Remember that the questions are True and False or Multiple-Choice in nature. This means that you need to be able to recognize the correct answer and not have it memorized for a short answer or fill in the blank question. Also, some students do poorly on True and False questions because they read into the question too much. Think of it this way; if the statement is true, then the answer is true. If any part of the statement is false then the answer is false. Be able to identify the following terms: Apologetics, Brahma, Buddhism, Epistemology, Hinduism, Humanism, Incarnation, Islam, Judaism, Karma, Moksha, Muslim, Nirvana, Pantheism, Pentateuch, Polytheism, Reincarnation, Resurrection, Samsara, Spiritualist, and Syncretism. Know the following figures, what they accomplished and why they are significant: Jesus Christ, John Dewey, Mohandas Gandhi, Moses, Muhammad, and Siddhartha Gautama. What type of apologetic did Paul use? - i.e. positive, negative, or contextual apologetics. Buddhism Where did Buddhism come from? What are its claims about evil? What are its claims about salvation? Who was its founder and what types of claims did he make? Know the different types of Buddhism. What is the best way to witness to skeptics? Christianity What kinds of evidences exist for the Bible being true? What is prophecy and how does it relate to Christianity? How does prophecy relate to Christ? Does this make Christianity unique? What were the reasons the writers of the New Testament believed that Jesus was the Christ? Are both faith and reason a part of Christian belief? Hinduism What are the basic claims of Hinduism? How does Hinduism portray god or the gods? What does Hinduism say about life after death? Judaism What is the significance of the date AD 70 in relation to Judaism? How did this event affect Judaism? What are the different types of Judaism? Is Judaism today Biblical? What is Passover and what does it mean? Islam Where did Islam come from and what are its claims? Is Allah the same god as the Christian God? How do Muslims pray? What caused Caner to convert to Christianity? What does he say about Islam? What does Islam say about Jesus? What does Islam say about the Trinity? How is salvation achieved in Islam? Do Muslims think that people are born Muslim? What should be the attitude of Christians toward Israel? The Resurrection Be able to discuss the key issues relating to Jesus Resurrection. Is this concept vital, or essential, to Christianity? Why? Jesus Be able to identify the essential claims Jesus made about himself. Know the relationship between Christ and God and why these claims are significant now. What is the Humanist Manifesto and how has it affected America?

What is the Eightfold path? What religion relies on the Eightfold path? Know the major religious text (if there is one) of each religion covered in class up to this point. What do different religions say about works? In Christianity what is the significance of the Cross? Why was it necessary and what did it accomplish? What is sin? Biblically, how is sin committed? What is a worldview? What should be the basis of a Christians worldview? Are emotions a good foundation for a worldview?
