2nd Lesson Plan Assignment Constructivist Instruction November 20, 2010 Educational Psychology

Amber Buckner

Teacher Name: Amber Buckner Date: November 20, 2010 Topic: Understanding domain and range values between theoretical and practical linear functions Grade Level: 9th Objectives/Student Outcomes: The student/s will be able to demonstrate the domain and range values for various linear functions.

Standards: 1. Algebra: Students use algebraic methods to investigate, model, and interpret patterns and functions involving numbers, shapes, data, and graphs in a problem-solving situation. Benchmarks: MA11.4.3: Students graph linear equations and interpret the results in solving algebraic problems. MA11.4.4: Students solve, graph, or interpret systems of linear equations. Time Frame: 90 minutes Materials/Preparation: Problems from book or off of a worksheet, paper, pencils. Plan for Evaluation: Watch students as they do assignment. Help when need to. Quiz at end of class.

Engage: Warm-up problems in which the students will determine the domain and range for several linear equations. Go over old information. Explain and go over how to domain and range.

Explore: Read a linear word problem and then determine an equation for that problem (The equation should be the same as the last warm-up problem). Now, discuss with the class what they think the domain and range should be, based on the wording of the problem. How does the domain and range of the warm-up compare to the domain and range of the word problem? Class discussion lead by instructor. Several more similar problems on the board. Have various students help with solution.

Explain: In small groups, the students will continue to solve for the domain and range of various equations and word problems. Help facilitate small group discussions if needed.

Elaborate: Graphing specific functions to reinforce visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners after group work. Have students explore linear relationships between two things in their life and determine an equation, the domain, and the range.

Evaluate: Help students when needed. Go over answers to group work.

Closure: After practice re-explain the difference between domain and range values of theoretical equations and real life word problems. Give homework involving worksheet.

Best Practice: Make sure students show all work. Make sure all answers are right.
