Grind League Rules

Youve taken powerful steamjacks to the metal-plated floors of the Destructodome, pitting them against their equals as well as the arena itself. You know what it takes to compete. Youre ready for the XGL!
TM

The XGL, Xtreme Grind League, is comprised of many Grind teams that clash in various arenas. Grind crews, determined to claim glory and tournament prizes, prepare their jacks for steam-powered sport. In the XGL, every challenge is welcomed and met with tenacious hard-hitting iron. In the XGL, its go hard or go home.
To construct your team, equip all your steamjacks with arms from your garage. Each steamjack must be equipped with two arms. The three left Fists and two left Heavy Fists can be attached only to the left arm sockets of your steamjacks. The right Fist, right Heavy Fist, and Interceptor can be attached only to the right arm sockets of your steamjacks. Take the steamjack cards and arm cards from the league card sheets corresponding to your equipped steamjacks. For each of your steamjacks, choose a different number and write that number in the number boxes on its steamjack card and arm cards. Write in the arm names on the steamjack card and mark whether the arm is attached to either the left or right arm socket of the steamjack. Use the steamjack tags from the team card sheets to mark your steamjack figures according to their numbers.

Starting a GRIND League

To start a Grind league, you will need at least four players with registered regulation Grind teams. Each league player will print out the league card sheets found in this document to use for tracking their teams progress. One registered player will act as the league commissioner (LC). The LC is responsible for setting up and keeping track of the league schedule using printouts of the XGL standings and schedule sheets in this document.

Metal
Metal measures both the experience and the wealth of your Grind team. Metal is earned each XGL game with a greater amount going to the winner. You can spend metal to enhance your Grind team by upgrading your steamjacks and crew. Each upgrade costs an amount of metal equal to the steamjacks or crews value. Determining ValueEach steamjack and crew has a value of 2 plus the total number of upgrades it has. Your team value is the total value of your crew plus that of all your steamjacks. Because teams start the league with no upgrades, your steamjacks and crew are all valued at 2 each, for a total team value of 12.

A regulation Grind team must be composed of steamjacks and arms of all the same color (red or blue). Painted teams are acceptable, but the steamjacks and arms must clearly be from either the red or blue set from a Grind box.

Team Registration
To register a regulation Grind team into the XGL, take a team card from the printed league sheets and fill in the team name/player box. Then construct your team, choose a crew, and choose a sponsor. Construct Your Team Choose either red or blue. Your garage contains all the steamjacks and arms of the chosen color from a Grind box; throughout the league, you will have the opportunity to purchase additional jacks and arms. At the beginning of the league, your garage contains two Crushers, three Runners, and the following arms: Choose a Crew There are four different types of crews that can assist your team of steamjacks on the road to victory. Each crew has a different set of abilities you can gain and upgrade. Choose one of the crew cards from the league card sheets: Maintenance Crew, Strategist Crew, Arcanist Crew, or Augmenter Crew. Fill in the starting value of 2 in the crew value box on your crew card, then write in your chosen crew type in the crew box on your team card. Choose a Sponsor Sponsors of XGL teams make it easier for you to advance your teams value. Take a sponsor card from the league card sheets and choose a Grind sponsor from the list on the card. Mark the chosen sponsor box on the sponsor card. Sponsors remain with you throughout the league until there is a breach of contract.

Fists (three left, one right) Interceptor Magno-Grip Scrambler Gyro-Shot Grappler Heavy Fists (two left, one right) Pulverizer Wreck-o-Matic Heavy Grappler Heavy Gyro Shot

LC Responsibilities
After each player in the league has completed registration, the LC collects their team cards, fills out the team standings sheet, and returns the team cards to the players.

Grind League Rules

XGL Games
XGL games take Grind to the extreme. Your turns are timed, and you can damage your opponents steamjacks, earn metal, and gain the attention of sponsors. Timed TurnsEach turn has a four-minute time limit. The timer for your turn starts once your opponents turn is completed. If time expires in the middle of resolving an action, resolve that action, then your turn immediately ends. DamageWhen you knock down a steamjack as a result of an attack, immediately roll for damage. To do this, re-roll all super strikes rolled in the attack. The results of this roll determine what happens to the steamjack. No strikes: The steamjack takes no damage. 1 strike: The steamjack is rattled. 2 or more strikes: The steamjack takes system damage. See the damage chart on the steamjack card to determine which system is damaged. If no power dice were rolled in the damage check, the first three rows on the damage chart are used. If at least 1 power die was rolled in the damage check, the last four rows of the damage chart are used. If the damage roll indicates damage to a system that is already damaged, the steamjack retains the damage and is also rattled. The effect of a damaged system remains with the steamjack throughout the league until it is repaired. DamaGeD SySTemS effecTS Boiler: A steamjack with a damaged boiler cannot redline. Left arm: A steamjack with a damaged left arm rolls 1 less boost die whenever using its left arm and cannot use any of its left arm upgrades. Legs: A steamjack with damaged legs suffers 1 to its Speed. Right arm: A steamjack with a damaged right arm rolls 1 less boost die whenever using its right arm and cannot use any of its right arm upgrades. cortex: A steamjack with a damaged cortex cannot roll power dice, cannot track focused actions, and cannot use bonus effects or imprints from its focus card. earningsAfter each game, you gain 5 metal plus 1 metal for each goal you scored. Second-Period SwitchAt the start of the second period of an XGL game, you can choose any five steamjacks from your garage to play out the rest of the game. Record Keeping Keep track of each of your XGL game results on your team card. After each game, write your opponents name, as it appears on his team card, in the Current Match-Up line on your team card and indicate whether you won or lost and how many goals you scored. Update your metal, win/loss record, and total goals.

League Schedule
An XGL season consists of up to ten regular season games with a mid-season tournament and end-of-season playoffs. After the first half of the season, all teams enter the mid-season tournament. After the second half of the season, all teams enter the playoffs. The better your record during the season, the easier your playoff schedule will be. match-Up BonusAfter each half of the season, you gain 1 metal for each different player you played during that half of the season. So, just before the mid-season tournament and just before the play-offs, you will gain up to 5 metal. LaTe ReGiSTRaTioN & BoNUSeS New players can enter the league anytime during the league before the end of the first half of the season. A new player must go through the normal registration process and let the LC know which player in the league invited them to join the league. That player gains a recruiting bonus of 2 metal. When a new player joins the league, determine the lowest number of games played by a current player. The new player gains a signing bonus of 5 metal for each of those games and crosses out that many matchup lines on his team card. The new player can play only the number of games remaining on his card. The new player can spend his signing bonus metal to make upgrades before his first game. Mid-Season Tournament The mid-season tournament is played in a three-round, Swiss-pairing format. Before starting the mid-season tournament, the LC collects the team cards, updates the XGL mid-season tournament sheet, and returns the team cards to the players. If you enter the tournament with a winning record (that is, more wins than losses) and do not have a sponsor, you gain any one sponsor of your choice. miD-SeaSoN ToURNameNT PRizeS 1st Place: +6 metal, +1 sponsor 2nd Place: +3 metal, +1 sponsor 3rd & 4th Place: +1 sponsor Playoffs The playoffs are played in a single-elimination format. Before starting the playoffs, the LC collects the team cards, updates the league schedule sheet, and returns the team cards to the players. If you enter the playoffs with a winning record (more wins than losses) and do not have a sponsor, you gain any one sponsor of your choice. The final two teams in the playoffs will play in the Grind Bowl. The winner of the Grind Bowl is the XGL champion!

Having extra steamjacks in your garage will allow you to change tactics mid-game.
Sponsorship BonusIf you win a game and you do not have a sponsor, you gain any one sponsor of your choice. Mark the chosen sponsor box on your sponsor card. If you just lost a sponsor as a result of the games outcome you still receive the sponsorship bonus for winning, but you cannot choose the sponsor you just lost.

Team Maintenance
After each game, you will have the opportunity to repair, reconfigure, and upgrade your jacks and to purchase extra steamjacks and arms. You can take these actions as many times as you like as long as you have enough metal to spend. Repairs To repair damage of a single system on a steamjack, spend 1 metal and remove that damage. Reconfigurations To perform a reconfiguration, spend 1 metal and replace an arm on one of your steamjacks with a different legal arm from your garage. The replaced arm loses all upgrades and damage and cannot be used in another reconfiguration until after the next game. Upgrades To upgrade your crew or a steamjack that played in the game that just finished, spend metal equal to its value. A steamjack or crews total value is equal to 2 plus the total number of its upgrades. arm UpgradesEach arm has upgrades in the form of special skills and power attacks that its steamjack can learn. To note an arm upgrade for your steamjack, mark the upgrade box on the arm card and the corresponding upgrade box on the steamjack card. Just as with normal power attacks, you must roll a power die when using an arms upgraded power attack. focus cardsAs an upgrade, you can focus your steamjack toward a specific play style. To note this upgrade, choose a focus card and mark one of its three focused action boxes. Write your steamjacks number on the focus card. While a focused action is marked, the steamjack gains its bonus effect and can track the focused action during games. To track the focused action, simply mark one of the boxes on the imprint bar whenever the steamjack performs the action. A steamjack can have only one focus card at a time. Before the start of each game, for each of your steamjacks, you can remove the mark from a focused action to mark another focused action on its focus card. Between games, you can remove a focus card from your steamjack at no cost, reducing its value, but you cannot buy it another focus upgrade until after the next game. imprintsOnce all the boxes are marked on an imprint bar, you can upgrade the steamjack with that imprint. To note an imprint upgrade, mark the box on the focus card next to the name of the imprint. crew UpgradesEach crew ability on a crew card has three levels with a box next to it. To note a crew upgrade, choose a crew ability and mark its first unmarked box (from top to bottom). Extra Steamjacks & Arms Before the start of the league and at the end of each game, you can purchase extra steamjacks and arms for your garage. The extra steamjacks and arms you purchase for your garage must be of all the same color as your team (red or blue) and must come from a Grind box. To purchase an arm, spend 1 metal. To purchase a steamjack, spend 2 metal. You can equip your purchased steamjacks with arms from your garage immediately. Once you have more than five steamjacks in your garage, you must choose five to begin an XGL game. At the start of the second period, you can change that lineup to play out the rest of the game.
