President
Dr. Evans P. Whitaker was named Anderson’s 12th president on Oct. 18, 2002. Dr. Whitaker has
a wealth of experience in the classroom and in academic administration. “I am impressed with
the mission of the college and its emphasis on the integration of learning and faith,” he said. “The
people I met on campus seem to have a very clear understanding of the school’s mission. Anderson
is also positioned geographically and in other ways to achieve great success in the next 10 years. I
am energized by Anderson’s remarkable progress and its potential to advance to the front ranks
of Christian higher education.”
A native of Shelby N.C., Dr. Whitaker came to Anderson from Belmont University in Nashville,
Tennessee, where he was vice president for university advancement for six years. He holds a Ph.D.
in education and human development from Vanderbilt University, a master’s degree in institutional
advancement from Vanderbilt’s Peabody College for Teachers and a bachelor of science in business
administration from Gardner-Webb University.
At Belmont, he was a member of the Senior Leadership Team, sharing responsibility for the general administration (academic affairs,
financial and legal affairs, student affairs and development) for the Baptist school of 3, 344 students.
As vice president for university advancement, he led the institutional advancement division and taught classes in management,
organizational theory and leadership in Belmont’s college of business administration. Under his leadership, alumni giving at Belmont
doubled while the endowment grew from $25 million to $50 million. During his career, Dr. Whitaker has led efforts that have secured
more than $153 million in private support.
Prior to his service at Belmont, Dr. Whitaker served as vice president for development at Wingate University, associate vice president
and director of development at Gardner-Webb University, and director of endowment
development for the North Carolina Baptist Foundation.
During his career at Anderson, Dr. Whitaker has led Anderson’s move to university status, directed the creation of the Vision 2014
plan, and led a capital campaign to raise $8 million for a new library.

Athletic Director
Nancy Simpson was named athletic director at Anderson University in June 2007. Her first year as
athletic director was highlighted by the Trojans winning the Joby Hawn Cup, Conference Carolina’s
all sports award. Simpson came to Anderson from California State University - San Bernardino
where she was athletic director for 12 years. In her tenure at CSUSB, Simpson was recognized for
dramatically improving the quality of the school’s athletic programs, raising grade point averages for
student athletes to 3.22 for the fall quarter of 2006. She also was responsible for overseeing a men’s
basketball program that has won six consecutive conference championships and three regional cham-
pionships as well as a women’s volleyball program that won four conference championships and two
regional championships. She has increased corporate sponsorships and contributions to the athletic
program at CSUSB, resulting in the addition of a 4,200-seat arena and new soccer field. Simpson, a
native of Marietta, Ga., graduated from Berry College and earned a masters degree from Southern
Mississippi. She has family in the northeast Georgia area.
In ‘04, CSUSB President Albert Karnig said of Simpson, “She’s a good recruiter of coaches. She’s a good supporter of coaches and a
good colleague with them. Secondly, she really does emphasize the integrity of the program. Thirdly, and this is really, really important,
almost all of our kids carry themselves nicely. And finally, they are increasingly winning teams.” Mrs. Simpson, in addition to her athletic
department duties, is also a member of the Senior Leadership Team at Anderson, which works closely with the president to provide the
executive leadership of the University.
“We feel very blessed to have attracted such a seasoned athletic director to our campus,” said AU president Dr. Evans Whitaker. “In
choosing Mrs. Simpson, the advisory committee members and I were particularly impressed with her exceptional qualifications and her
reputation as a skilled athletic administrator, a genuine people-person and an individual of integrity. We are confident in her ability to
build on a tradition of excellence in athletics at Anderson University. I welcome her to our staff and look forward to working with her in
the years ahead.”

Season
Season Preview Preview

Last season was a big step forward for the Anderson University men’s basketball team.

With a roster that featured seven freshmen, the Trojans were 12-16 overall and 10-10 in Conference Carolinas.
Reaching the .500 mark in a difficult conference with a young roster has created higher expectations for the 2008-09
season. “We’ve taken a step to where hopefully we have some expectations,” said head coach Jason Taylor. “It has taken
us two years to develop expectations inside and outside our locker room. I think we will define those expectations as the
year goes along. We’re still learning how to win. We’ve got to learn how to win and handle winning.

“If there’s a concern, it’s that most of our experience is sophomores. We don’t have a senior on the roster.”

The Trojans are led by sophomore Brandon Young, who was an all-conference selection last season. Young led the team
in scoring at 16.3 points per game and scored in double figures in 26 of 28 games. “In a perfect world, Brandon becomes
our leader,” Taylor said. “He has to do that. The big thing for him improvement-wise is turnovers. He has to take care
of the basketball. He has the ability to be a pass-first point guard and still score 15 points per game. That’s what I expect
out of him. “He’s still learning how to pick his spots to get his own shot and when to get other players involved. He’s got
a lot of learning and growing to do.”

2008-09 AU Men’s Basketball

The leading returning rebounder is sophomore Stephen Cobb. Cobb was third on the team in scoring at 10.8 points per game and
averaged 6.1 boards per game. “Stephen is extremely versatile,” Taylor said. “He can step out and shoot the three. He’s still learning
to put the ball on the floor. The biggest sign of improvement is on the defensive end. My expectations for him are
really high. He has the ability to be a special player.”

Taylor says the rest of the sophomore group also took major strides during the summer.

“Jarret Johnson, Trey Britton, Quinton Baines, and Kevis Cornwell all have gotten better,” he said. “Before he leaves here Jarret
might be known as the best athlete to ever wear the uniform. The things he can do vertically are extremely special. What sticks
out for me are the effort plays. He is athletic and explosive, and he is one of our best defenders. “Kevis wants to do everything
right. He’s probably the quickest player on our team. He’s really improved his shooting, which will enhance his ability to drive.”

Taylor is also expecting major contributions from a solid group of juniors. Taylor calls them “a strong character group.”
“Jonathan Mattox, Josh Beale, Stoney Hill, and Jamelle Lowery all had good summers,” he said. “Nobody outworked Jonathan
this summer. Josh got stronger and Stoney worked on his shot. Jamelle can be a high-energy guy who can give us something on
the defensive end and he has improved his ability to pass the ball.”

Taylor has added two freshmen to the roster - 6’2” Nick Trull and 6’7” Taylor Shugart.

“We’ve continued to add athleticism,” he said. “We’ve added some shooting with Nick Trull and another interior presence in
Taylor Shugart. We knew both of them would be good. We still don’t know how quickly they’re going to produce, but we’ve been
pleased with how they have progressed.”

With the large influx of new talent last season, Anderson’s style of play started to evolve. If given the opportunity to run, the
Trojans turned up the tempo. “We’re continuing to adapt to our talent,” Taylor said. “As a coach you have a system you want to
run. The truth is I’m not going to turn down really good players. We’ll figure out how to coach them. We have consistent principles.
You have to adapt that to the players you get. I think our talent level is improving. Our style of play will continue to evolve.

“We want to attack the basket as much as possible. Last year, we felt like we were pretty good in the mid-range area. This year, we
have to take the next step and be a penetrating team. We also want to develop more aggressiveness on the defensive end.”

Jason
TAYLOR
Men’s Basketball Head Coach

Jason Taylor, a native of Clarkrange, Tenn., was named head coach at Anderson University on May 31, 2006. In his second
season in 2007-08, Taylor led a roster than had more freshmen than upperclassmen to a record of 12-16 overall and 10-10 in
Conference Carolinas. The 10-10 finish was Anderson’s first .500 or better record in Conference Carolinas play in five years.

During his first year, he witnessed the growth and development of a young team that consisted of 10 freshmen and only 2
seniors. Despite their youth, the Trojans led the 11-team conference in defensive field-goal percentage, was second in points
allowed, and fourth in steals and turnovers caused. By the end of the season, the Trojans were playing the toughest teams
the conference has to offer to last possession games. The Trojans took Barton College, the eventual Division II national
champions, to double overtime. They also played the other top three teams in the league: Mt Olive, Limestone, and Queens
down to the wire in the last two weeks of the regular season.

Taylor joined the Anderson staff in May ‘03 as assistant men’s basketball coach and head junior varsity coach. He spent
three seasons with head coach Doug Novak, Anderson University’s all-time winningest coach as a member of NCAA
Division II. Two years before coming to Anderson, Taylor was the assistant basketball coach, adjunct professor of physical
education, and fitness center supervisor at Roane State (Tenn.) Community College in Harriman, Tenn. Taylor earned an
associate of science degree from Roane State in ‘99 and a B.S. degree in health and physical education from Jacksonville
State University in Alabama in ‘01. He started his playing career at Aquinas College in Nashville, Tennessee. From Aquinas,
Taylor transferred to Roane State where he red-shirted in ‘97-98 before playing the ‘98-99 season. As a red shirt sophomore
at Roane State, he averaged 17 points per game. He was named the MVP of the Pensacola Junior College Thanksgiving
Classic, made the TJCAA All-Eastern Division team, and he led the TJCAA in 3-point shooting making 96 of 208 from
behind the arc. Taylor signed to play at Jacksonville State in Alabama following the ‘99 season at Roane State. During the
‘99-00 season, Taylor was a member of the JSU Gamecocks first winning season since moving to Division I. That season,
the Gamecocks finished 17-11 which was good enough for a third-place finish in what was then the Trans American Athletic
Conference (TAAC) and is now the Atlantic Sun Conference.

During his playing career, Taylor played for some of the best coaches in the business. He played for TJCAA Hall of Fame
coach Charlie Anderson. He also played for Randy Nesbit, former Southern Conference Coach of the Year at The Citadel.
Taylor played one season under Mark Turgeon at JSU. Turgeon was the head coach at Wichita State during their Sweet 16
run in the NCAA tournament in ‘05-06 and is now the head coach at Texas A&M.

Clemmons (Missouri), Scooter Sherrill (NCSU) and Tony Harris (Tenn). He left the Krunk in January ’06 to join the staff of
the Charlotte Royals, a 17-and-under AAU team that sent eight players to Division I schools.
