Budget
approved
on first
reading
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
The commissioners are pro-
posing a tax increase in the
2012 borough budget.
The $15.2 million budget
was approved unanimously by
the commissioners on first
reading, and a public hearing
will be hosted on Tuesday,
April 24.
The local tax rate is in-
creased by about 2.72 cents
over last years rate, Commis-
sioner Jeff Kasko said. For the
average assessed home of
$491,359, this would be $134
more than last years tax bill,
he said, with a local purpose
tax rate of 46.9 cents per $100
of assessed property value.
The increase in the local
purpose tax rate falls within
the 2-percent cap that was ini-
tiated by the state a few years
ago.
The total budget is increas-
ing a little more than 17 per-
cent over last years, but
spending is virtually the same.
Operating expenses, Kasko
said, are increasing by less
than 1 percent over the 2011
amount.
Were in a tough situation
where our revenues may go up
or go down each year, but our
appropriations are definitely

The administration and students of Marlton elementary and middle school helped sell and buy hundreds
of pairs of neon laces to raise money for Colin Hough a graduate of the two schools who was recently
diagnosed with cancer. The laces are part of the Go4TheGoal foundation. Hough, 14, is now a freshman at
Haddonfield Memorial High School.
Laces stretch to Evesham
By ROBERT LINNEHAN
The Haddonfield Sun
Neon shoelaces are appearing
everywhere in Haddonfield and
now in Evesham Township in
support of a local family and
their son,
Colin Hough, 14, was recently
diagnosed with a rare form of
cancer that attacks his soft tissue.
The faculty members of Marlton
Elementary School and Marlton
Middle School have banded to-
gether and are selling neon
Go4TheGoal shoelaces to raise
money for the family.
Hough, who attended Marlton
Elementary School, is now a
freshman at Haddonfield Memo-
rial High School.
Laura Nicholls and I, who are
both teachers at Marlton Elemen-
tary School, decided to bring this
fundraiser into our school when
we found out that Colin Hough, a
former MES student, was diag-
nosed with cancer. Colin is only
14 years old, MES teacher Cari
Funk said. This fundraiser was
a huge success and we were able
to raise over $1,500. On Tuesday
April 20, which is the first day of
spring, our student body and staff
members will join together and
wear our laces to show our sup-
port.
Since that statement was made,
the group has raised more than
$2,000 for the Hough family.
A third of the sales go toward
paying for the laces, a third goes
to Go4TheGoal and the remain-
ing third goes to the Hough fami-
ly.
These days, its hard to walk a
step or go into a classroom at the
elementary and middle school

APRIL 4-10,2012 THE HADDONFIELD SUN 5
going up each year, he said.
Appropriations are increasing,
he said, but not due to fiscal irre-
sponsibility from the borough.
Unfunded mandates such as
increases in health insurance
costs keep rising each year,
Kasko said.
Additionally, a decline in rata-
bles for 2012 and a decrease in the
rate of current year tax collec-
tions have proved to be difficult
challenges for the budget, Kasko
said.
In 2012, employee salaries, ben-
efits and pension payments a lit-
tle more than $7 million in total
make up about half the total 2012
budget.
We believe this is a responsi-
ble budget that reflects the reality
of current state fiscal require-
ment and the economic condi-
tions facing all taxpayers. We can
no longer fund every program,
service and initiative that resi-
dents desire. Unlike previous
years, we are now faced with
making significant cuts in pro-
grams and services in order to
stay within the state-mandated 2
percent property tax increase
cap, a message on the borough
budget reads.
Prior to the final reading of the
budget, Kasko said he would host
a budgetary information session
on Wednesday, April 18, at 7:30
p.m. in the borough hall auditori-
um for interested residents.
Kasko will give a detailed budg-
et presentation and will also field
any questions that taxpayers may
have.
In other borough news:
Commissioner Ed Borden said
he and Board of Education Presi-
dent Steve Weinstein met with
Bancroft representatives for a
very brief and introductory meet-
ing to discuss the possibility of
the borough and school district
purchasing the Bancroft campus
for public use.
The board of education is tak-
ing the lead right now, Borden
said, and its the hope that a refer-
endum could be presented to bor-
ough voters by September to ap-
prove several million dollars for
the purchase of the campus.
There are only four times a
year the borough can put a refer-
endum on a ballot, Borden said,
so hopefully something can be de-
cided before September.
In a February meeting, the
board of education said the entire
plan would likely cost about $16.8
million to purchase the property,
demolish the current buildings,
and make several other improve-
ments at the site.
For a homeowner with the av-
erage valued home in the bor-
ough of $491,000, it would result
in an annual school board tax in-
crease of $268 for the next 20
years at a 4 percent bond.
Finally, Borden announced the
issue of overnight parking would
be discussed at length at the next
commissioners meeting on
Thursday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m. at
borough hall. Borden asked that
people make note of the different
date of the commissioner meet-
ing.
The police department and
commissioners are going to look
at the pros and cons of keeping
the overnight parking restric-
tions for Haddonfield.
Its been found, Borden said,
that an inordinate amount of
time is being spent on enforcing
the rule and also administrative-
ly, as there is rampant confusion
over who can qualify for a park-
ing permit.
The issue will be discussed at
length at the next meeting.

6 THE HADDONFIELD SUN APRIL 4-10,2012
in our opinion
T
he governor was in Atlantic
City last week celebrating the
nearly completed Revel a
huge casino hotel set to stage a grand
opening in late May.
During his visit, Gov. Christie tout-
ed the 5,000 new permanent jobs the
Revel will create; the $153 million in
payroll it will provide; and the $155
million in state and local taxes it will
generate each year.
And that, of course, is good news for
the beleaguered city and the state as a
whole.
But theres so much more work for
Atlantic City. Primarily: Will it be-
come a destination point for not only
gamblers, but others as well? If it does
not, this big bet will turn out to be a
loser.
Recent reports out of Las Vegas in-
dicate that visitors there are spending
more money on dining, entertain-
ment, food, etc., than on gambling.
That shouldnt surprise anyone. There
are far more gambling outlets avail-
able to people these days than in years
past.
Atlantic City faces a nearly impossi-
ble task of becoming simply a gam-
bling hub. Casinos in surrounding
states are eating up gambling dollars
that historically have gone to AC. Peo-
ple who just want to play a slot ma-
chine or blackjack can find places
much closer to home to do so.
Atlantic Citys challenge is to create
something other than a string of casi-
no hotels. It has to create an experi-
ence. It has to attract people who will
stay in the city for more than a day to
gamble. Relying on busloads of people
from out of state who cash their slot
voucher and then play for a few hours
before re-boarding the bus to go home
just isnt a long-term plan for success.
Atlantic City can reinvent itself.
After all, Time Square reinvented it-
self. The Revel could be a key step in
that renovation, so long as other key
elements safety, shopping, cleanli-
ness, entertainment, etc. follow close
behind.
A bet on Atlantic City
A new casino hotel is great news, but far from a permanent solution
A step toward revitalization?
The Revel will bring jobs and tax dol-
lars. But it isnt enough, by itself, to
stop Atlantic Citys decline. Boosting
non-gambling attractions shopping,
entertainment, dining, etc. is critical
to the citys long-term success.

POlice report
The following items can be found on file
with the Haddonfield Police Department:
A Lane of Acres resident reported to po-
lice on March 23 at 10:16 p.m. that his home
had been broken into and several items
had been stolen.
Jewelry, silverware and a 350-pound safe
which held a loaded handgun and
expensive watches were stolen from the
house.
The officer at the scene processed the
home and entered the stolen gun into the
NCIS database.
A Hawthorne Avenue resident reported
to police on March 18 at 9:52 a.m. that her 6-
year-old sons orange and white bicycle had
been stolen from the front of her home
overnight.
Representatives from Tavistock Country
Club reported to police on March 17 at 7:15
a.m. that several suspects had driven an
ATV on the golf course and damaged sev-
eral greens.
An investigation led to three
juveniles, who admitted to driving the ve-
hicle.
The officer spoke with the juveniles and
their parents.
Tavistock didnt file any charges against
the suspect, reports said.
A Marne Avenue resident reported to
police on March 15 at 1:54 p.m. that there
were several unauthorized charges made
on his Discover Card in November.
They totaled $99.75.
A report came in to the department on
March 16 at 9:07 p.m. that juveniles threw a
case of beer out a window of a car they
were driving in on Centre Street.
Officers say they found an empty case of
Natural Lite beer on the street and no signs
of the car. The beer case was disposed of at
the department of public works.
The Evening Membership Department
of the Haddon Fortnightly is having its an-
nual flea market on April 21 at the club-
house on the corner of Kings Highway and
Grove Street.
The doors will open at 9 a.m., and the
sale will continue until 2 p.m.
Some people may remember that this ac-
tivity goes way back 40 years or more ago,
it was known as The Thrift Shop.
It used to be more than a one-day event,
but was changed to just one day many
years ago. The items sold, then and now, fit
the same categories.
This year, the clothing will be sold on the
second floor. There will be things for adults
and children, from work clothes to dressier
clothing.
In the foyer of the building, plants and
freshly made baked goods will be for sale.
The clubroom will be filled to capacity
with household items, jewelry, books, toys,
holiday decorations and much more.
Occasionally there will also be a few
pieces of furniture.
The real fun of a flea market is coming
and finding that perfect something.
We cant promise miracles for all, but
last year, a woman bought a pin she found
attractive for $2. When she took it to the
jeweler to be cleaned, he told her it was
worth $500.
All of the profits will go to the many
charities the club sponsors.

A talk open to the public that
brings solutions to addiction, in-
cluding drugs and alcohol, will be
presented by Ginny Luedeman, A
Christian Science practitioner,
and teach from Salem, Ore., will
be given in First Church of
Christ, Scientist, in Haddonfield.
The program will be held on Sat-
urday, April 21, at 10:30 a.m. Her
(occasionally hair-raising) experi-
ence, natural openness and ease
with public appearances make
Luedeman a compelling, lively
speaker.
She will discuss how recogniz-
ing your spiritual identity brings
needed freedom, as well as how a
deeper understanding of God as
love builds strong and healthy re-
lationships.
Luedemans life is a story of re-
demption, renewal, and prayer in
action. Her father was an alco-
holic who moved his family con-
stantly. He finally abandoned the
family when she was just 15. She
dropped out of high school, mar-
ried at 15, and became a mother at
17. She subsequently had to deal
with her own addictive behavior
and resulting life challenges.
Luedeman was the lead singer
of a 60s rock band, The Morn-
ing Glory. The band played in
concert with The Grateful Dead,
The Rolling Stones, Janice Joplin,
Jimi Hendrix, and recorded an
original album. This gave her
first hand experience with the
hard rock lifestyle. She survived
some harrowing experiences
with spiritual help.
Her life turned around in the
middle of an LSD overdose. With-
in two years big changes started
happening in her life. She began
studying the book Science and
Health with Key to the Scrip-
tures written by Mary Baker
Eddy, in conjunction with the
Bible. As a result of her changes
of life style, confusion and fear
have been transformed into an
understanding of ever-presence
of Gods love and care for every-
one. Now married for more than
41 years, she has six children and
has housed foster children. She
has found that understanding our
relationship to God brings a sense
of home that is good, loving, last-
ing, and joyous.
Her talk about how Christian
Science heals bodies and restores
lives is one of interest to every-
one.
The free program will be held
on April 21, 10:30 a.m. at the
Christian Science Church, 355
Kings Highway East, Haddon-
field.

Haddonfield Child Cares Ex-
tended Day Kindergarten Pro-
gram (EDKP) students are busy
and active these days, running
sprints, doing relay races, jogging
around school playgrounds and
learning about healthy foods
thanks to a grant by the New York
Road Runners (NYRR).
The grant of $500 was one of 40
awarded to schools and non-prof-
its around the country to help
support youth running and fit-
ness events.
Dubbed Events to Run, the
grants are the latest resource of-
fered by NYRR in a suite of free
youth running programs and
teaching tools.
Under the guidance of EDKP
Program Supervisor Rose Ellen
Miller and volunteer coach Lau-
ren DeLong, the children are
being challenged to get out and
move to increase their individual
fitness levels.
DeLong, a local HMHS grad
and a former student of the
EDKP herself, is a tri-athlete who
has participated in numerous
competitions from Washington,
D.C., to San Francisco.
She is enjoying her time with
the kindergarteners, saying, It's
been great to see the kids
progress day to day. They are real-
ly learning how to run with prop-
er form and how to pace them-
selves through the activities.
The staff will help the children
track their individual fitness de-
velopment, and guide the chil-
dren through discussions and ac-
tivities geared to improving
knowledge of nutrition and
healthy eating as well.
The program will culminate
with a Fun, Food and Fitness
event on May 4, hosted by the Ris-
ing Star Masonic Temple on
Kings Highway in Haddonfield.
Planned to coincide with Had-
donfields First Friday celebra-
tion as well as the NJ School-Age
Coalitions Outdoors in the Gar-
den State Week, the event will in-
clude games and healthy snacks,
and will be free and open to chil-
dren from the community.
For more information about
the event, or the EDKP in general,

zens in the community.
NJSACCs Afterschool CARES
is a professional development
project for afterschool staff. The
goal of the project is to train and
support afterschool program staff
to provide children with re-
sources to engage in service
learning in their communities.
Participants receive training
on service learning and get sup-
port with resources, program vis-
its, phone and email assistance.
Once trained, staff members as-
sist the children in choosing and
carry out service learning proj-
ects with as little direction as pos-
sible.
The children of the program
selected a food donation as their
project, with the food collected to
go to the Senior Food Pantry
through the Mabel Kay Senior
Center in Haddonfield.
To raise the funds to purchase
the food, the children contracted
to do chores at home, for which
parents would pay into the food
fund.
On two warm and sunny con-
secutive days in mid-March, the
morning and afternoon EDKP
sessions walked from their pro-
gram at Central School to the
Haddonfield Acme, where they
carefully selected the items on
their prepared lists.
Good decision-making skills
helped them to gather the most
food possible for their money.
A total of about 20 filled with
peanut butter, spaghetti, rice,
canned fruits and vegetables and
other staples were then delivered
by the children to Mabel Kay Cen-
ter Director Dory Mann, who had
arranged for a special pickup of
the food from the senior facility
by pantry staff.
Mann explained to the children
that there were many local sen-
iors who frequently didnt have
enough food to eat, and thanked
them for caring enough to make a
difference for older people in
need.
The children of EDKP and the
other Haddonfield Child Care
program regularly engage in
service learning in their pro-
grams, with projects which have
run the gamut from raising funds
for H.A.T.C.H, the Haddonfield di-
nosaur, to collecting blankets and
towels for local animal shelters.

and after-school programs run by

without seeing a student sporting
the neon shoelaces.
We just got such huge interest
in this and raised so much money
through these laces, we really
wanted the family to see this
somehow, Funk said.
The two teachers began selling
the laces to teachers at the two
schools first, before offering them
to students.
So far, the teachers have sold
hundreds of pairs of laces and
opened up sales to students on
March 20.
The generosity of the Evesham
community has been overwhelm-
ing, Funk said.
When opening envelopes and
going through the order slips, I
saw so many forms that said
things like, keep the change, no
change needed, please donate
the extra money, I only want one
pair, the rest is for donation.
Many of these messages were
even in the childs handwriting.
The generosity of the
community was incredible,
Funk said.
The Haddonfield community
also raised money for Haddon-
field Middle School student Jason
Garstkiewicz through the Go4the-
Goal Foundation.
Students held sales in the high
school and middle school and in
shops around town. Within a
week, we sold over 7,000 pairs of
laces and raised more than
$30,000 in lace sales and dona-
tions, said Jean-Anne McMa-
hon, a Haddonfield resident and
friend of Jasons family. You
cant go anywhere in town with-
out seeing someone wearing
them.
Based in Merchantville, the
Go4theGoal Foundation is a
501(c)3, non-profit charitable or-
ganization founded in 2006 by Dr.
Richard and Beth Stefanacci,
soon after their oldest child was
diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma,
a rare form of bone cancer.
The foundation created Lace-
Up 4 Pediatric Cancer, a program
that provides brightly colored
shoelaces to local sports teams to
show their support for a cancer
patient in their community.

As the Little League baseball
players wound down their open-
ing day parade through Haddon-
field on Saturday, March 24, they
were piped into the ballpark by
appropriately garbed bagpiper
Dan Brown.
Introductory announcements
were made and Mayor Tish
Colombi threw a well-aimed
strike to a Little League catcher
at the plate and earned both a
well earned round of applause.
In centerfield facing the flag-
pole was a contingent of Post No.
38 members awaiting their cue
from the announcer. They were
there to provide a ceremonial
raising of the flag and were ac-
companied by Post No. 38 mem-
ber, also a conductor of the pick-
up band, Tom Patton.
Tom Reiter, a member of the
pickup band, also accompanied
him.
The buglers sounded the Call to
Colors followed by their rendition
of The Star Spangled Banner,
as Post No. 38 Past Commanders
Lou Fallstick and Tom Baird
hoisted the flag.
In addition to participating in
sponsoring the American Legion
Little League team and providing
the American and POW/MIA
flags for the Little League com-
plex, Haddonfield Post No. 38 ini-
