Brown Essay Did America need to find in World War II? Since the beginning of established governments, civilizations and nations have been struggling to keep their states protected from disputes all over the world. Now, through the thousands of battles fought and millions of lives lost, individual countries stand today. However, armed conflicts occur in the present day, and of these was World War II. Torn between the decisions of intervention or isolationism the United States of America had to carefully consider the wins and losses of this war in the light of the success of their country. Therefore, despite the economic hardships brought on by the Great Depression in the 1930s, America had to fight in World War II because any further delay will result in the death of innocent lives, harm done to America, and future damages to the United States. The U.S had to enter the war because if America did not act any sooner than it did, significantly more number of people wouldve died. First, American sailors and boats were under attack of the Germans. With their underwater superiority due to their submarines or U-boats, Germany ceaselessly fired at U.S ships because America was sending resources and ammunition to its brother country, Britain. Down with the ships went also the sailors. The deaths of U.S citizens were more than enough reasons for America to take action to curtail future deaths. Furthermore, the Holocaust, the most infamous act of Hitler, wiped out more than 12 million Jews, homosexuals, Christians, Gypsies, and more. The Americas

Lim 2 intervention in the termination of concentration camps saved 100,000-150,000 lives and much more, taking account of the future generations. Lastly, during the WWII, Germanys despotic leader Adolf Hitler stopped at nothing in order to achieve his dream of world domination. Europe during this time was getting towed over by the Nazi forces. Countries and their citizens such as Poland, Denmark, and Netherlands were being swatted away from the path of Hitler like little flies. If the U.S did not spoil the Nazis plans when it did, Hitler wouldve never been satisfied with his expansion and caused more death in trying to conquer more land. Therefore, had the U.S not entered the war, millions of lives wouldve been in danger or innocently killed. The harm done to U.S even before it entered the war serves to be another reason to Americas entry into the war. First, as mentioned before, American ships were being bombarded with attacks from the German U-boats. This was so because the U.S, through the Lend-Lease Act, "leased" Britain arms, ammunition, tanks, planes, ships, fuel oil, and other supplies to fight and stay in battle with the Germans. As a result, the majority of the 2,000 allied boats sunk by the U-boats were largely Americans. Furthermore, many aspects of life that was related to the Pacific were threatened due to the ambitious plans of the Japanese. Japans main goal was to have revenge on U.S embargo on Japanese goods and to take over the Pacific. However, the U.S could not permit the Japanese to take over because America had its own uses of the ocean. This included food, oil, transportation, and military advantages. The U.S had no choice but to be aggressive right back if they wanted their way of life to stay the same. Finally, came the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the initial event that awoke the sleeping giant, by the Japanese. In its quest to dominate the Pacific, Japan attempted to take out all of the U.S navy fleet by bombing the naval base in Pearl Harbor,

Lim 3 Hawaii. Fortunately, the U.S fleet was not completely wiped out because some of the major ships were not on the base but in other places such as factories to get fixed. Nevertheless, America suffered great losses: 20 battles ships have been damaged, 200 airplanes were in ruins, and 3,000 troops were either dead or wounded. As one can see, the U.S turned away from their policy of isolationism and entered World War II because simply staying out of the European countries troubles only led to more inevitable damage. In order to keep the future of America safe, the U.S had to enter World War II and snip it at its buds before too much destruction. First, any future stronger attacks will not be able to be prevented because of the Great Depression. At this point in World War II, the Axis countries were at a primitive stage where they were only beginning their domination of the world. Therefore, despite the economic depression, the U.S was able to successfully thwart the Axis efforts of gaining more power. However, if America chose to stay out of the war simply because of its belief in isolationism, the Allies power would eventually run out of resources and the Axis powers will rise to an uncontrollable status. Hence, if America is planning on stopping the Axis power anytime in the future, it could not have waited any longer than it already had. Additionally, if the other Allies countries fall under the rule of Germany, then many connections and benefits that the U.S had with those countries will be lost. For example, the U.S and Britain fed each others economies through imports and exports ever since America was born. Without key export countries, America would suffer even more greatly than it did during the Great Depression. Also, crucial resources from other non-European countries such as textile or sugar from India and investments will all be cut off if the Nazis got to them first. Finally, the insatiable ambition of Hitler would have never stopped at just Europe. Hitler would not stop at just the conquer of European

Lim 4 countries because with over 60% of the world under his power, Hitler will not hesitate to take over the next competing world power, the United States. Evidently, history shows this to happen multiply times where many nations express the same unappeasable hunger for land and power. For example, one of the reasons why Rome fell was because it could not control its want for more land, which led it to spread itself too thin. That is all to say, it was in the U.S best interest to enter the war so that detrimental effects of the war will not come back and bite them on the butt. In conclusion, the intervention of the U.S in World War II was absolutely necessary because many lives were in danger, America has already been under some form of attack, and no amount of delay will save America from future disastrous attacks. Despite the relative peace that is attained today, it is unfair to say that freedom of speech and worship and from want and fear came at a low cost. The lives that had to be paid with will never be compensated for. Therefore, the lives of the innocent civilians and the bold soldiers during the time of World War II will be the reminders of why we are able to go to church, why we are able to eat, and why we are able to look forward to another shining morning.
