Lesson Plan- Day 1: This lesson will be given during a ninety minute, sixth grade; regular math class.

The class consists of twenty six students in which 14 students are females and the other 12 are males. Of the students 9 are African American, 9 Caucasian, 6 Hispanic, and 9 Asian. One student has ADD and two students are ESL students. Prior to the lesson, students should know: How to analyze patterns and relationships How to write basic ratios and proportions Basic knowledge of fractions Reasoning of multiplication and division Upon Completion of the lesson, students should know: Basic definitions to be used in the Unit Main ideas associated with Ratios & Proportions Symbols and Visual Representations of material I. Lesson Introduction Upon entering the classroom the students desks will be prepared with a pre-exam. Students will be instructed to begin the exam quietly at their desks as everyone is entering the class period. They will be given instructions to take the pre-assessment and answer the questions to the best of their abilities; the ESL students will have assistance from the ESL teacher inside the general classroom. Once finished, students will be assigned to four groups in which they will be given a list of terms they must define. All groups will be given the same terms and must use their textbooks and resources provided to come up with a definition for each. Focus The terms/definitions that the students will be required to learn during the period to use during the course of the unit are: Ratio: a comparison of two similar quantities obtained by dividing one quantity by the other Ratio Symbol: a ratio can be displayed with a colon (:) Proportion: a statement of the equality of two ratios. Formulation of a word problem given a specific ratio to each group will also be included in the group activities of the day. A unit outline and rubric for upcoming quiz and tests during the course will also be addressed during the first day of this unit. Purpose/Objective Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

The purpose of this lesson plan is to assess the students prior knowledge of ratios and proportions, to give a basic introduction of terms/symbols the students will learn in the unit, and to begin a brief explanation on the purpose of ratios and how they will be able to relate ratios to real world concepts.

Input/Modeling Students will present their group posters for the class and be given a few basic ratios to represent in words while still in groups. They will be encouraged to make their answer in relation to real world events. Students will evaluate each groups work and check to see if the ratio written in words represents the numerical term correctly. The class will then decide which team had the best word problem describing the ratio. Check for understanding of material. Worksheet will be assigned for homework.
