Chemical characterization of the compounds and the role of the placebo effect are important issues that need to be verified in the development of drugs of plant origin. During the last two decades there has been an up search in search for new plant derived drugs containing the medically useful alkaloids, glycosides, polyphenolics, steroids and terpenoids derivatives. Researchers identified 119 secondary metabolites isolated from the plant that are being used globally as drugs. It has been estimated that 80%of the worlds population still use the traditional medicines for their primary health care needs.

. The discovery of antibiotics has decreased the spread and severity of a wide variety of diseases. However, and as a result of their uncontrolled use, the efficiency of many antibiotics is being threatened by the emergence of microbial resistance to existing chemotherapeutic agents [1]. Bacteria and fungi are evolving numerous mechanisms to evade antimicrobial agents and the resistance to old and new antibiotics is rising in medical practice ,Bacterial strains such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumonia (PRSP), and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), in addition to the development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial strains ,are just few examples that have made the search for new and novel antimicrobial substances among the first priorities within the quest for such materials. Not to mention the fact that the use of some antibiotics is associated with side effects, including allergy, immune- suppression, and hypersensitivity .For all these reasons, there is a pressing need to identify new and novel antimicrobial agents that would help in alleviating the problems of emerging resistant bacterial and fungal pathogens. Plant derived natural products represent an attractive source of antimicrobial agents since they are natural and affordable, especially for rural societies in poor developing countries and also used in different formulations by different cultures as part of their materia medica heritage .However, due to toxicity of some of the medicinal plants, great care should be observed in their prescription. Also plant derived agents may have different mechanisms of action than conventional drugs, and this could be of clinical importance in health care improvement. Plants are rich sources of many bioactive secondary metabolites that have the potential to treat different afflictions. Examples of these compounds include flavonoids, phenols, phenolic glycosides, unsaturated lactones, sulphur compounds, saponins, cyanogenic glycosides and glucosinolates Considering mortality and morbidity has been caused by widely distributed food-born pathogens susch as diarrheagenic serotypes of staphyloccocus aureus , bacillus cereus .escherichia coli, salmonnella enteritidis. There are more than 1.3 billion annual case of human salmonellosis worldwide with 3 million death (pang et al . 1995; baumler et al.2000).among the various diarrheagenic serotypes of E.coli, enterohemorrhagic E.coli 0157:h7 is implicated in a large number of food borne outbreaks in many part of world , including developed nations, and this serotype has low infectivity dose (doyle 1991; Mead et al.1999;Gopinath et al.2005). The epidemiology of food born disease is changing and reports from different parts of the world indicates that strain of resistant food born pathogens have emerged as public health problems . the illnesses as a result of eating foods contaminated with bacteria and / or their toxins range from stomach upset to more serious symptoms such as diarhea, fever ,vomitting ,abdominal cramps and dehydration (slutsker et al.1998;adak et al 2002).food born disease assosiated wth s.enteritidis , s.aureus , b.cereus and E.coli have been reported in australia, canada ,japan, united state,Europian countries, nigeria and south africa and these pathogens and never food born pathogens have shown raised resistance to antimicrobial agent in practical use(slutsker et

al.1998;akinyemi et al.2000;Farzana and hamed 2006.in view of resistant patterns of pathogenic bacteria against antimicrobial agent , there is an urgent need for new antimicrobial products that too from plants material is essential .the effect of plantsextract on bacteria have been studied by a very large number of researchers in different part of world (karuppusamy et al. 2001 a,2001b,reddy et al.2001;karuppusamy et al.2002b;ateb and Erdourul 2003;parekh and chanda 2007;doughari et al.2008).studies on traditional medicinal plants have provided the path to the discover of many effective drugs (karuppusamy et al.2002a.2002c).
