Lenten Reflections
OUR PARISH LIFE
Rev. John M. Bauer, Pastor
With this column I would like to update you in regard to several areas of our parishs life. 1. Parish Council Elections: This spring we will have two open seats on our Parish Council. We are looking for individuals to represent our Learning and our Christian Life Departments on our Parish Council. For your information, the members of our Parish Council represent a cross section of our parish, and include representatives from our Departments of Life, Learning, and Liturgy. The Parish Council meets monthly and works with me and our staff to determine the needs, aspirations, and direction of our parish. As such, it plays a vital role in our parish community. If you know of someone who volunteers in the areas of Learning or Christina Life, and who might be interested in serving on our Parish Council, please encourage them to consider this possibility. 2. This Years Budget and our Budget for the Next Fiscal Year: As I write this column at the end of January, I am pleased to report that through the generosity of our parishioners and friends, especially at Christmas, we are currently on budget in terms of our revenue. Our staff continues to do an excellent job of reducing and controlling expenditures so we are also saving money in regard to our expenses. Given this, and if these trends continue, we anticipate that while we will end the year with a small deficit, we will be able to cover this deficit through revenue from the rental of our school building. It is our intent, though, to continue to use the bulk of this rental income to build up our reserves in case there are future downturns in the economy.

WE HAVE MUCH TO BE GRATEFUL FOR AS WE JOURNEY TOGETHER TO THE CROSS OF CHRIST THIS LENT

In a few weeks, we will begin developing our budget for the next fiscal year (which will begin on July 1). As always, we anticipate there will be increases in our insurance costs as well as other costs over which we have no control. And while we are hopeful that the economy has turned the corner, we will continue to be conservative and cautious in our budget for the next fiscal year. We are blessed that our Finance Committee takes its responsibilities very seriously. They monitor our financial situation closely and are clear that we will not put our parish in any financial jeopardy. As always, I ask you to continue to be generous in your support of The Basilica. I ask you to continue your financial support for The Basilica especially during the summer months. Please know of my gratitude and thanks for your generosity. 3. Partners in Preservation Grant: As I think almost everyone is aware, The Basilica won a Partners in Preservation Grant earlier this fall. This grant sponsored by American Express and conducted via Facebook will enable us to repair and repaint the ceilings in the sacristy and narthex, as well as wash and clean the walls. At the present time the work in the Narthex is scheduled to begin in mid-February. The renovation work should take about six weeks, and it will be done in sections so each week you should be able to see the increasing improvement. The work in the Sacristy should begin mid to late summer. My thanks and great gratitude go to all those who voted and encouraged others to vote for The Basilica. This renovation work will be a wonderful gift for our community. 4. Challenge Grant for Basilica North Side Housing Fund: As I have mentioned previously as part of our Centennial Campaign we dedicated a 10% tithe from that Campaign to our St. to Vincent de Paul Ministry. As we discussed how best to use this money, it became clear that affordable housing is a critical issue. This is particularly true in regard to affordable housing, on the North side of Minneapolis. Given this, we entered into discussions with Common Bond Communities about partnering with them as to form and fund The Basilica North Side Housing Fund. Through this fund, and working with Common Bond Communities, our goal is to put in place a plan that will have a lasting impact on housing on the North side of Minneapolis. I believe this is a significant and essential activity for our Basilica community to initiate. It is a wonderful expression of the vision that guides our parish: Seek the well being of the city to which I have sent you. Pray for it to the Lord. For in seeking its well being, you shall find your own. (Jeremiah 29:7). Recently, through the generosity of a parishioner, we received a $162,000 challenge grant for The Basilica Landmark. This grant will enable us fulfill our commitment for this housing initiative. I you are interested in making a gift toward this challenge grant please contact Emily Hjelm in our Development Department. continued on page 10. 2 www.mary.org

Many years ago, my father took my younger brother and myself to the celebration of the Stations of the Cross in a small town outside of Bruges. Although I do not remember every detail of the celebration I do remember the sermon which was somehow part of the Stations. The elderly priest climbed into the pulpit and the first thing he did was bang his first on the wooden railing. Then he banged it again and again. The first bang woke me up, the second made me uncomfortable and the third made me almost scared. You think this is scary he yelled, looking down upon us, just you wait till you arrive at the doors of Hell. He then went on to describe Hell in the greatest and most frightening details. At one moment he looked straight into my frightened eyes and pointing at me he exclaimed: You, son, are a sinner. Beware of Hell. It took days before I was able to sleep again at night and even to this day I really dont want to end up in Hell. Although I suppose that is for the best maybe traumatizing people is not to preferred way to communicate the message. There are two ways to go about inviting people to change their lives for the better: the via negativa or negative way and the via positiva or positive way. The via negativa which was clearly preferred up until the second Vatican Council emphasized our sinfulness and pointed out the awful things awaiting us should we not turn away from our evil ways. The via positiva on the other hand invites us to be better and to live up to our baptismal mission affirming the good in each one of us. The season of Lent offers us the opportunity to take stock of our individual lives and of our Church as a whole. Are we living up to our full potential? Are we truly embodying the Gospel? Are we indeed the Body of Christ to the world. This is not a punishing or negative exercise, on the contrary it ought to be a positive and encouraging exercise. It is also an exercise that ought to start with self and then move to others. What is it that I can do better in the service of the common good inspired by the Gospel? Too often we look quickly past ourselves and revel in calling out sin in others. It is also an exercise that needs to embrace the broader picture rather an all too narrow one. Sometimes we fail to see the moral forest in favor of one sinful tree. In everything we do we ought to remember that Jesus has a few choice words for us: You who are without sin cast the first stone. And further: I will not condemn you either. Go home and sin no more. All of us have closets filled with skeletons skeletons of hatred, jealousy, envy, pride, self-righteousness Lent is a good time to open our closets and deal with those skeletons, our own skeletons. This is not easy. It is much easier to find fault with others. Can you imagine how wonderful the world would be if all of us spent as much time cleaning our own spiritual house as we spend on finding fault with others? May this great season of Lent afford us the time to just do that: a Lenten inventory and cleansing of our own Christian lives.

Lenten Reflections
RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
Janice Andersen | Director of Christian Life

So often, our good intentions are left behind while life carries us toward actions that we do not intend. St. Paul resonates with this struggle when he states, I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate (Romans 7:15). It is this powerful force of intention in our life that Lent invites us to consider. What is it that we most truly desire? What is it that we hold most dear? The answers to these questions guide our life. Our actions, ultimately, reflect our deepest values. Lent is a time to recommit to God. It is a time to slow down and claim what is most important. The Lenten disciplines of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving invite us to recalibrate our inner compassto focus our attention on our relationship with God. Our relationship with God shapes the way we understand ourselves. It directs our thoughts and actions each day. As we pray, when we fast, when we give to those in need, we are reminded that God is with usloving us through all our struggles, challenges, and joys. As we turn our attention to our relationship with God, we find comfort, forgiveness, and healing. As we recommit to God, we are loved even through our failing. Lent bursts into our lives and reminds us to be intentionalto pay special attention to our relationship with God. The Basilica provides many ways to make this concrete. Join in the many opportunities for prayer, including Stations of the Cross, Taiz, or Centering Prayer. Perhaps it is time to participate in spiritual direction, where you can prayerfully listen to the movement of the Holy Spirit in all areas of your life. Pledge your commitment to our St. Vincent de Paul ministry and help our community reach out to our neighbors in need. Lent invites us to recommit to God. Let us be intentional about our spiritual life throughout this sacred season. Together, let us find something that continues to bring our relationship with God into the center of our lives.

PRAYER, FASTING, & ALMSGIVING The three major spiritual disciplines of Lent are prayer, abstinence/fasting and almsgiving. By spending more time in prayer we open ourselves further to the Word of God and the movement of the Spirit; through abstinence and fasting we seek solidarity with those who do not have enough food and we empty ourselves for God; by giving alms we divest ourselves of excess things and we help to relieve the burdens of poverty born by so many. Celebrate Lent by joining us on Fridays for Eucharist, soup and conversation, and walking the Stations of the Cross together.

CELEBRATION OF THE LORDS RESURRECTION On Holy Saturday night, the community is invited to gather around the new Easter Light, which will be taken from the bonfire on the front plaza outside the church. The assembly listens to the story of salvation in word and song and celebrates the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism through immersion, Confirmation and first Eucharist). This service commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, thus celebrating the victory of life over death. The services on Easter Sunday are of the most visually splendid celebrations of the whole year. These joyous and festive liturgies celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ in word and song. They contain many processions with colorful liturgical accoutrement. The sanctuary will be beautifully adorned with colorful banners, Easter lilies and a sea of bright spring flowers.

This service commemorates the evening before Jesus death, when he gathered with his disciples to celebrate Passover, thus instituting the celebration of the Eucharist. The four main elements of this service are: the washing of the feet (all members of the congregation are invited to wash one anothers feet); the collection of gifts for the poor; the celebration of the Eucharist; and the procession with the Blessed Sacrament.

This service commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus for the salvation of all humanity. The Cross of Salvation is passed over the entire assembly. This service commemorates the death of Jesus and his descent into hell. The name Tenebrae is Latin for shadows/darkness. As the service unfolds, all lights in the sanctuary are extinguished during the service until only one candle remains. When the last candle is carried out of the church, and complete darkness fills The Basilica, the organ and timpani begin the symbolic earthquake. Soon the entire congregation starts pounding on the pews, until the one candle returns.

Lenten Reflection
THE MYSTERY WITHIN
Paula Kaempffer | Director of Learning

When I was growing up, Lent was always a big deal around our home. We would spend time together trying to decide what to give up or do without for several weeks. It crossed my mind many times, what can I live without while not causing too much suffering in my life? What is the easiest thing to give up? Then we would sit down with my mother and discuss what we would do for Lent. She would question us about our choices and help us decide what the more altruistic choice might be. It always ended up being very different from our original thoughts. Funny how that always happened! Anyway, our Lenten sacrifices were meant to help us prepare for the big Easter celebration of the Resurrection. And that tradition has always stuck with me. Those learning experiences have given me an awareness that Lent needs to be different from the rest of the year. For Lent is that time of year when spring begins to appear and the weather turns milder and the anticipation of the season grows after a long winter. But it is also that time of year when we stop to pause and ponder our relationship with God and how it has grown this past year. It is time to assess our prayer life, our responsibilities to family, our church and to those in need throughout our community and our world. Deeper questions need to be asked. Sinful tendencies need to be uncovered and owned. And priorities need to be realigned. If Jesus is not the center of my life, someone else will be. Some of us would like to avoid Lent. If is difficult to look at yourself with such honesty. But for those who welcome Lent, they will find a great mystery within. Something happens to us when we are willing to expose ourselves before God in such a way as to stand in our own poverty and nothingness. It seems that God comes to us in a very different way simply because our defenses are down and our own wills are put aside in light of Gods love and gentleness and faithfulness. Lent can be a great gift to those of us who want to experience this transformative grace.

IF JESUS IS NOT THE CENTER OF MY LIFE, SOMEONE ELSE WILL BE.

An Invitation to Lenten Giving

In the sacred season of Lent, we are called to fasting and almsgiving. Each Lent we invite you to pledge your support for The Basilicas Saint Vincent de Paul outreach ministries, so that we can respond to the vital needs of our neighbors. With your support of Saint Vincent de Paul, we are able to respond with grace and dignity to thousands of neighbors in need. In the past few years, we have experienced a rise in demand for assistance, and especially from parish member families. With your support, we are keeping people fed, clothed, in their homes, and on the path to employment. 100%every single pennyof your donation goes directly to the people we serve at Saint Vincent de Paul. Please make a pledge or gift online today at www.mary.org/donate, or participate in our Saint Vincent de Paul second collection on March 24 and 25. Thank you in advance for your generosity. 5. Our Pipe Organ: When we renovated our Pipe Organ as part of our Centennial Campaign, we discovered that the plaster in some of the organ chambers was flaking and needed to be removed and the walls repaired so that flaking plaster wouldnt damage the pipes. Unfortunately to conduct this repair work, we needed to temporarily remove some pipes. The pipes that are removed are being stored in the east ambulatory of The Basilica. This area is temporarily off limits so that none of the pipes will be accidentally damaged. 6. Special Collections: While no one likes special collections, it is heartening for me to update you on our most recent special collections. At the beginning of December $19,081 was collected for the second collection for our St. Vincent de Paul Ministry. In mid January $7,058 was contributed to our second collection to help with the cost of heating The Basilica. Finally, while not special collections, we had three special events that helped raise money for our budget. $3,075 was raised at Bingo in October. In December, The Santa Bash netted $1,850, and Amahl and the Night Visitors raised $5,911. Your contributions to these collections, and your support of these special events, particularly in this difficult economic climate, testify to the generosity of the people of The Basilica. Please know of my gratitude for your generous and caring response. 7. Congratulations to our St. Vincent de Paul Ministry: This past December our St. Vincent de Paul ministry was given an award by Catholic Charities for their longstanding cooperative work with Catholic Charities. This service has included serving meals and helping with various projects and needs over many, many years. It has also included countless volunteer hours. I am enormously proud of the work of our St. Vincent de Paul Ministry. It has provided and continues to provide important and needed services to the broader community we serve. This award from Catholic Charities is a great acknowledgment and recognition of this important work. 8. New Mass Texts: At this point, I would give us a solid A for effort in terms of adjusting to the new Mass texts. While most of the changes are minorsome more soall of them are taking some time to get used to. Since we have been using the same Mass texts for many years now, I suspect it is easy to fall back into the old and familiar language. Our weekly worship aid contains the new texts, so I invite people to make special use of these worship aids. With time and practice, I believe the new Mass texts will become as familiar and as prayerful as the texts they replaced. Undoubtedly, though, it will take some time. We have received several queries as to why we are no longer printing the readings for the Mass. The answer is simple. We are trying to save money. Including the new Mass texts has taken up space in the worship aid that we used for the readings. If you miss the readings, you can always locate them at the USCCB website that is included in the worship aid. We have also started printing a limited number of copies of the readings each week, for those who have difficulty hearing in The Basilica, or who understand things better when they read them as opposed to hearing them. Well evaluate how were doing
