About NRMP
The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a private, not-for-profit corporation established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment to positions in graduate medical education (GME). Five organizations sponsor the NRMP and nominate members to the Board of Directors: American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) American Medical Association (AMA) Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) American Hospital Association (AHA) Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) In addition, there are three medical student members nominated by the AAMC Organization of Student Representatives, the AMA Medical Student Section, and the American Medical Student Association; three resident physicians selected from at-large nominations; and one public member. Each year, the NRMP conducts a Match that is designed to optimize the rankordered choices of applicants and program directors. In the third week of March, the results of the Match are announced. The NRMP is not an application processing service; rather, it provides an impartial venue for matching applicants' and programs' preferences for each other. Each year, approximately 16,000 U.S. allopathic medical school students participate in the Match. In addition, another 20,000 "independent" applicants compete for the approximately 25,000 available residency positions. Independent applicants include former graduates of U.S. allopathic medical schools, U.S. osteopathic students/graduates, Canadian students/graduates, and students/graduates of international medical schools. In 2011, the NRMP enrolled 4,235 programs, which altogether offered 26,158 positions. A total of 37,735 applicants registered for the Match. Of those, 16,893 were 2011 graduates of accredited U.S. allopathic medical schools and 20,842 were independent applicants.

How the NRMP Process Works

Because it provides a uniform date for decisions about residency selection for both applicants and residency training programs, the NRMP eliminates the pressure that might otherwise fall upon applicants and programs to make decisions before all their options are known. The Match Participation Agreement contains the policies and procedures developed to accomplish this objective and should be reviewed carefully. The NRMP can best accomplish its goals when every program involved in the selection of applicants participates fully in the Match. Since January 1998, an applicant-proposing algorithm has been used in all NRMP matches. Offers made to applicants by the various programs are determined by the applicants' preference lists (rank order lists). Applicants match into the program listed highest on their list(s) that also ranked the applicant and that did not fill all available positions with applicants the program preferred as determined by its rank order list. There is one cardinal rule for both programs and applicants: neither must ask the other prior to the Match to make a commitment as to how each will be ranked. Each party may express interest in the other; however, questions about how each will rank the other must be avoided and must not be solicited. Neither programs nor applicants should consider the others comments about interest as commitments. Candor and honesty are important for both programs and applicants. Applicants who register for the Main Residency Match and who are either (1) withdrawn by the NRMP or (2) unmatched or partially matched after the matching algorithm has been processed may be eligible to participate in the Match Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance program (SOAP). SOAP is an ordered process whereby eligible applicants attempt to obtain positions in programs that did not fill all their positions.

The Role of the NRMP in Medical Education

The NRMP is not a centralized application service for graduate medical education programs and cannot advise applicants in selecting specialties or programs. The NRMP is a mechanism for matching applicants to programs according to the preferences expressed by both parties in their final certified rank order lists. Types of Positions Offered through the NRMP Residency Match Categorical (C) positions are in programs that expect applicants who enter in their first post-graduate year to continue until they have completed all training required for specialty certification, provided their performance is satisfactory. Primary categorical programs in medicine and pediatrics are designated by (M). Preliminary (P) or PGY-1 positions provide one or two years of prerequisite training for entry into an advanced position in specialty programs that require one or more years of broad clinical training. Internal medicine, surgery, and transitional programs commonly offer preliminary positions. Advanced (A) or PGY-2 positions begin in the year after the Match and require completion of one or more years of preliminary training. Applicants without prior graduate medical education can apply for these positions while also applying for preliminary positions that are compatible with their plans. Physician (R) positions are reserved for physicians who have already completed some graduate medical education. Physician positions are not available to senior U.S. medical students.

About Residency
The Application Process
Candidates must apply to the programs of their choice by requesting applications directly from the programs or by using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). ERAS is the Electronic Residency Application Service administered by the AAMC to transmit via the Internet residency applications, personal statements, recommendation letters, MSPEs (Medical Student Performance Evaluation), transcripts, and other supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors. Candidates are responsible for requesting letters of recommendation, ordering transcripts, and forwarding other materials directly to each program by the deadline established by each program. Programs may require graduates of U.S. medical schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) to provide copies of their MSPE. This document is the standard recommendation prepared for graduating seniors by U.S. medical schools. Graduates of non-LCME accredited medical schools will be expected to provide an alternative to the MSPE from individuals capable of evaluating their potential as physicians. Program directors review candidates' credentials and, if interested, invite them for interviews. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they meet all program prerequisites and institutional employment conditions as provided by the program during the interview. The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) serves as the ERAS coordinator for students and graduates of international medical schools. Refer to the ERAS web site for more information (http://www.aamc.org/eras). Please note: Registering with ERAS does not register applicants with the NRMP. Applicants must register separately with each service.

Communications with Applicants

Program directors review candidates' credentials and, if interested, invite them for interviews. The NRMP encourages frank and open discussion between applicants and program directors during the interview process. Applicants and programs are responsible for the completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of information exchanged during the application process. Programs must provide complete and accurate information to interviewees, including a copy of the contract the applicant will be expected to sign if matched to the program and all institutional policies regarding eligibility for appointment to a residency or fellowship position. This information must be communicated to interviewees in writing prior to the rank order list certification deadline and the program should obtain a signed acknowledgement from each applicant who interviews. The ranking of an applicant by a program or of a program by an applicant establishes a binding commitment between them should they be matched. Appointments are dependent upon applicants meeting all eligibility and employment requirements in effect at the time of the rank order lists deadline shown on the Schedule of Dates for the Match. Institutional policies take precedence over the results of the Match. The Match Participation Agreement does not preclude one party from expressing interest in the other. It is not a violation for an applicant or a program to volunteer how one will rank the other; however, any attempt to request such information is a violation of the Match Participation Agreement. Verbal or written statements implying a commitment should not be solicited, nor should applicants be required to reveal the names or identities of programs to which they have or may apply. Rank order lists take precedence over verbal commitments.

Part II: Registration

Applicants register once in the NRMP Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) System and submit personal profile information that may be updated after the initial registration process. During the initial registration, applicants are assigned an AAMC ID number and select a personal password of their choice. The AAMC ID number and the personal password will be used by the participant to access the R3 System for future sessions.

Type of Applicants
Two types of applicants are eligible to register for the NRMP Main Residency Match: U.S. seniors (students in U.S. allopathic medical schools) and independent applicants.

Seniors in U.S. Medical Schools

A U.S. senior is a fourth-year medical student in an allopathic school of medicine that is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. A student with a graduation date after July 1, prior to the Match, is considered a U.S. senior. U.S. seniors are sponsored by their medical schools in the NRMP Main Residency Match. Information about the results of the Match is sent to the U.S. senior's school of medicine. For a senior in a U.S. allopathic medical school to participate in the Main Residency Match as a U.S. senior, the following requirements must be met: the applicant has attended a U.S. medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), and the applicant has been determined by the schools dean of student affairs to be on schedule for graduation and to be eligible to enter graduate medical education by July 1stin the year of the Match .

Before registering for the Match, students are asked to carefully review the Match Participation Agreement found on the NRMP website at http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/policies/map_main.html.

Verification of Credentials
All Match applicants must have their credentials verified in order to participate in the Match. Requirements for the verification of credentials vary depending on the type of applicant, as outlined below. U.S. Seniors The NRMP requires that U.S. seniors be verified for scheduled, on-time graduation (before July 1st in the year of the Match) from their medical school by their NRMP school official or administrator. If for any reason an applicant cannot be verified for graduation by the medical school, the student will be notified by the NRMP. If a senior student is withdrawn from the Matching Program because he/she will be ineligible to enter graduate medical education on July 1 in the year of the Match, the student may accept a position outside the Matching Program provided training will begin no later than February 1 in the year following the Match; however, if the student elects to participate in the Match, he/she will be a sponsored applicant. Students who are withdrawn from the Match may not seek an out-of Match position before noon eastern time on Monday of Match Week. Students who are withdrawn may or may not be eligible to participate in the Match Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP). For further information about SOAP, see page XX. Students/Graduates of Osteopathic, Canadian, & Fifth Pathway Programs and Previous Graduates of U.S. Medical Schools The NRMP requires the NRMP school official at the above-designated institutions to verify that the information provided by the applicant is correct. If for any reason an applicants credentials cannot be verified, he or she will be notified and withdrawn automatically from the Match. Students/Graduates of International Medical Schools The NRMP requires students and graduates of international medical schools to pass all examinations required for certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). The ECFMG requires applicants to pass USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (or their equivalents). Step 1 and both parts of Step 2 (CK AND CS) must be passed by the rank order list deadline. Students and graduates of Fifth Pathway programs also must pass Steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE. Step 1 and both parts of Step 2 (CK AND CS) must be passed by the rank order list deadline. Applicants who have not received their reports of performance on any of the above examinations still may register for the Match; however, if the ECFMG reports that applicants have not met the examination requirements by the deadline for submitting rank order lists, those applicants will be withdrawn automatically from the Match. 12

Navigating the Registration, Ranking, and Results System can be accomplished using three different methods: the Left Menu Bar, text links at the bottom of the screen, and to a lesser extent buttons on the browser toolbar.

Using the Left Menu Bar

The Left Menu Bar is a blue-green bar found at the left of each screen within the R3 System. Several options can be accessed using the Left Menu Bar. These options are displayed by category and will be described in detail later in the User Guide. To Navigate Using the Left Menu Bar: Click the desired option on the menu bar. Options on the Left Menu Bar include: General Directory: Displays a Program Search Window. Agreement: Displays the Match Participation Agreement Help: Accesses the online Help system Logout: Logs out of the Registration, Ranking, and Results System Contact Us: Displays NRMP contact information such as phone numbers, fax number, email address, and mailing address Back to My Options: Takes you back to your Applicant Options page My Profile Update My Profile: Allows the applicant to update and maintain personal contact information including couple status and withdrawal from the Match Change My Password: Allows the applicant to change his or her password SOAP Beginning January 15, a link for the Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program will display on the left menu bar. During Match Week, the link will become active for applicants eligible to participate in SOAP. My Rank Order List: Allows the applicant to set up an ordered ranking of preferred programs that will be used during the Match process. Institution and Program Violations: The Institution and Program Violations report was designed to display information about graduate medical education institutions and programs that have violated the National Resident Matching Program's Match Participation Agreement. is reflected on the Institution and Program Violations report. Term limits of any sanction(s) are included to identify the length of time the sanction is in effect. My Reports: Displays a list of reports available to applicants.

Using the Text Links

In addition to the Left Menu Bar, a set of text links displayed on the bottom of most pages also can be used for navigation. These text links include the same set of choices found on the Left Menu Bar. Pages are accessed by clicking on the desired option.

To Navigate Using the Links: Click the button for the desired link.

Using the Browser Toolbar

Navigation buttons also can be found on the browsers toolbar. Back and Forward buttons are available in most Internet browser programs. It is important to remember, however, that Back and Forward buttons display only the pages that have been viewed. Specific Match options cannot be selected from the browser toolbar.

To Navigate Using the Browser Toolbar: 1. Click Back to move back to the previous page. 2. Click Forward to move forward to the next page. The Forward button is available only if the Back button already has been used. In general, the navigation buttons within the R3 System should be used rather than the browser buttons.

Withdrawal from the Matching Program

Applicants who decide not to participate in the Match can withdraw from the R3 System. Withdrawal requests must be entered before the rank order list deadline. Applicants who have submitted certified rank order lists and who do not withdraw by this deadline will be included in the Match. They will be obligated to accept an appointment if matched and if all of the program prerequisites have been fulfilled. Withdrawal for U.S. Seniors U.S. seniors can withdraw from the Match for a limited number of reasons, and only through the dean of student affairs. U.S. seniors may not withdraw themselves. Withdrawal for Independent Applicants Independent applicants who are appointed to a position in a program sponsored by the U.S. military services or any other matching service, or who accept a position outside the NRMP, must withdraw. Applicants who decide not to participate also should withdraw through the R3 System. Self-Withdrawal for Independent Applicants To Withdraw from the Match Program: 1. Click Update My Profile.

2. Click Withdraw under the Options heading. 3. Select a Reason for your Withdrawal. Reasons include Applicant Request and non-NRMP position.

Automatic Withdrawals
Automatic withdrawals from the Match will occur for the following reasons: 1. Applicants who participate in both the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) and the NRMP are expected to accept a position if matched to a Canadian program. Applicants may register for both the CaRMS and the NRMP. In those years in which CaRMS has an earlier schedule than the NRMP, individuals who match through CaRMS will be ineligible to match to concurrent-year NRMP positions. 2. Applicants who participate in the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Match are prohibited from participating in the NRMP Match for concurrentyear positions. The earlier schedule of the AOA Match allows applicants to compete for an osteopathic position and, if unsuccessful, to participate in the NRMP. The AOA informs the NRMP of the dual participants who have matched into an osteopathic program, and those individuals are withdrawn automatically from the NRMP Match for concurrent year PGY-1 and PGY-2 positions. 3. Applicants who obtain positions in the Military Match will be withdrawn from the NRMP Match based on information forwarded by their service to the NRMP. 4. Applicants who obtained advanced positions (PGY-2) to begin in the current Match year either in the NRMP Specialties Matching Service or the previous year's Main Residency Match must receive a waiver of the match commitment in order to participate in the current year's Match. The applicant will not be allowed to register for the Match if a waiver has not been granted by the NRMP. 5. Students or graduates of international medical schools who are not confirmed by ECFMG as having passed all examinations necessary for ECFMG certification will be withdrawn automatically by the NRMP. 6. Fifth Pathway program students or graduates not confirmed by ECFMG as having passed the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 (CK and CS) (or their equivalents) will be withdrawn automatically by the NRMP. 7. Applicants whose attendance or graduation from a Canadian, osteopathic, or Fifth Pathway program is not confirmed by their institutions will be withdrawn automatically by the NRMP. 8. Applicants whose graduation from a U.S. medical school is not verified by their institutions will be withdrawn automatically by the NRMP. 9. Applicants with unpaid fees for any services provided by the NRMP will be withdrawn automatically.

Part III: Ranking

The NRMP matching algorithm uses the preferences expressed in the rank order lists submitted by applicants and program directors to place individuals into program positions. The process begins with an attempt to place an applicant into the program indicated as most preferred on that applicants list. If the applicant cannot be matched to his or her first choice program, an attempt is made to place the applicant into the second choice program, and so on, until the applicant obtains a tentative match or all the applicants choices have been exhausted. An applicant can be tentatively matched to a program in this process if the program also ranks the applicant on its rank order list, and either: the program has an unfilled position. In this case, there is space in the program to make a tentative match between the applicant and program, or the program does not have an unfilled position, but the applicant is more preferred by the program than another applicant who is already tentatively matched to the program. In this case, the applicant who is the least preferred is removed from the program to make space for a tentative match with the more preferred applicant.

Matches are tentative because an applicant who is matched to a program at one point in the matching process may be removed from the program at a later point to make space for an applicant more preferred by the program, as described in the second case above. When an applicant is removed from a previously made tentative match, an attempt is made to re-match this applicant, starting from the top of his or her rank order list. This process is carried out for all applicants, until each applicant has either been tentatively matched to the most preferred choice possible or all choices submitted by the applicant have been exhausted. When all applicants have been considered, the match is complete and all tentative matches become final. For more information regarding the matching algorithm, please visit the NRMP web site at http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/about_res/algorithms.html.

Summary of Guidelines for the Preparation of Applicant Rank Order Lists

1. Applicants are advised to rank ONLY those programs that represent their true preferences. 2. Programs should be ranked in sequence, according to the applicants true preferences and not based on what the applicant perceives to be his or her chances of matching to a particular program. 3. Factors to consider in determining the number of programs to rank include the competitiveness of the specialty, the competition for the specific programs being ranked, and the applicant's qualifications. In most instances, the issue is not the actual number of programs on the rank order list, but whether to add one or more additional programs to the list in order to reduce the likelihood of being unmatched. 4. Applicants are advised to rank all programs deemed acceptable to the applicant, i.e., programs where they would be happy to undertake residency training. Conversely, if an applicant finds certain programs unacceptable and is not interested in training at those programs, the program(s) should not be included on the applicants rank order list.

Searching for Program Codes

Although program codes can be entered directly in the Program Code field, applicants can run a program search to obtain and enter unknown codes. The program search allows applicants to find program codes based on specialty, program type, state/province, and institution code. This function is not designed for use in populating the rank order list but rather to find the occasional incomplete or incorrect program code. Applicants are strongly urged to look up all program codes in the Directory located at the top of the left menu bar prior to entering them on their rank order list. The following table illustrates the conventions used in the NRMPs 9-digit program coding scheme. Institution ACGME Specialty Code Program Description Program Track The 4-digit code specifying the specific institution. Example: 1000 The first three digits of the 10-digit ACGME number. Example: 140-12-23-181 One-letter designation of the type of Program. Example: P Where the program is located within the institution. This will typically be zero, unless there is more than one location. Example: 0 Examples: 1000 140 P0 Medicine - Preliminary 1000 140 P1 Med-Prelim/Neurology

Supplemental Rank Order Lists

The supplemental rank order list is used by applicants who rank advanced programs ("A" positions beginning in the second year of training) on their primary rank order list and who also want to match to a compatible preliminary or transitional first-year program (P position) for the first year of training. For each PGY-2 (advanced "A") program ranked on the primary rank order list, a number of PGY-1 (preliminary or transitional) programs that correspond to that advanced program may be ranked on a supplemental rank order list. Although not a requirement, applicants generally consider geographic location in developing their supplemental rank order lists for specific advanced programs. Therefore, more than one supplemental rank order list linked to different advanced programs may be created, if necessary, and these will be marked as A, B, C, etc. A supplemental list must be created before it can be assigned to an advanced program. A supplemental rank order list is used in the Match only if the applicant matches to an advanced program on the primary rank order list. During the matching process, the matching algorithm first looks at an applicant's primary rank order list and attempts to make a match. If the applicant is matched to an advanced program, the matching algorithm will then seek to match the applicant to a preliminary position from the supplemental rank order list that is linked to that advanced program. If the applicant does not match to a first-year program, the match to the advanced program still holds, and the applicant must seek a PGY1 position during Match Week using SOAP if the applicant is SOAP-eligible.

Note: In a few cases, preliminary programs are restricted. Those preliminary programs are linked to advanced programs and are referred to as joint A/P programs. Only applicants who are matched to the particular advanced program may also be matched to the joint preliminary program. In those cases, an applicant will not be able to rank that preliminary program on a supplemental rank order list unless that list is the supplemental list for the joint advanced program. Each of the advanced programs linked in a joint arrangement must have its unique supplemental rank order list of preliminary programs assigned to it.

Creating and Assigning Supplemental Rank Order Lists for Advanced Programs
A supplemental rank order list must be created before you can assign it to an advanced program. If more than one supplemental rank order list is created, the specific list must be assigned to each advanced program being ranked on the primary rank order list. Note: A supplemental rank order list is used in the Match when the applicant initially matches to the corresponding advanced program on the primary rank order list. To Create a Supplemental Rank Order List for an Advanced Program: 1. Click the My Rank Order List option from the Left Menu Bar.

Certifying a Rank Order List

A rank order list will not be used in the matching process until it has been certified by the applicant. Certification indicates to the NRMP that the rank order list is finalized and ready to be used for the Match. Changes still may be made to the rank order list after it has been certified. However, once the list has been changed, the new version must be certified in order to be used for the Match. Changes include adding a program, deleting a program, changing the order of the programs, and changing couple status. Note: The R3 System does not retain previous versions of the rank order list regardless of whether the lists were certified. The list currently displayed on the screen upon logging in is the ONLY version on file with the NRMP. After the rank order list deadline, the NRMP will not add, delete, or move programs or in any way modify a rank order list. To Certify a Rank Order List: 1. Click the My Rank Order List option.

2. Verify that all programs are ranked appropriately in order of preference.. 3. Click Certify List. The Certify Rank Order List page is displayed. You must CERTIFY your rank order list to have it included in the Match. Certifying the primary rank order list also certifies any supplemental rank order lists created by the applicant. 81

Warning messages also may be displayed, including a message informing you of any additional fees due. If you do not wish to pay those fees, you must Cancel and delete the extra ranks before you certify your list.

4. Enter your Password. Remember: When you certify a rank order list you enter into a binding commitment to accept a position should a match occur.

A rank order list can be changed at any time up until the rank order list deadline. However, if modified, the new version of the ROL must be recertified in order to be used in the Match. The rank order list displayed after certification or upon logging in to the R3 System is the only rank order list on file with the NRMP. The R3 System does not retain copies of prior rank order lists, regardless of whether those prior lists were certified. After a U.S. senior has certified his or her rank order list, a link to the AAMC Graduation Questionnaire (GQ) is displayed.

The NRMP recommends that you print a copy of your certified rank order list to maintain with your records. After you have certified your rank order list, you will receive an email from the NRMP with the date and time your list was certified and the number of programs on your list.

Viewing and Printing a Rank Order List

The NRMP strongly recommends that all Match applicants print their certified rank order lists and maintain a copy for their records. Rank Order List Fees

Single applicants may rank up to 20 programs on a primary rank order list with no additional charge. A total of 20 unique programs may be ranked on all of the applicants supplemental rank order lists combined with no additional charge. Each additional ranked program over 20 will incur a charge of $30 per program. Primary Rank Order Lists 1 to 20 programs ranked Each additional program over 20 Supplemental Rank Order Lists 1 to 20 programs ranked Each additional program over 20 Fee No Charge $30.00/program ranked Fee No Charge $30.00/ program ranked on all Supplemental lists combined

Each partner of a couple may rank up to 30 unique programs on his or her primary rank order list with no additional charge. A total of 30 unique programs may be ranked on all of the applicants supplemental rank order lists with no additional charge. Each ranked program after 30 will incur a charge of $30 per program. If an applicant wants to submit a rank order list with more than 20 programs (or more than 30 programs in the case of couples) the normal procedure should be followed. For more information on creating a rank order list, refer to page 55. When a rank order list with more than 20 programs (or more than 30 in the case of couples) is about to be certified, a notice that extra fees will be due is displayed in red on the Certify Rank Order List page. Unless the extra ranks are deleted from the rank order list prior to certification, the fees must be paid after the list has been certified. Please note that extra rank fees will not be refunded even if the rank order list subsequently is modified to include fewer than 20 programs for single applicants or fewer than 30 programs for applicants participating as a couple. Applicants with unpaid fees will be unable to access the R3 System, their rank order lists will not be used when the matching algorithm is process, and they will not be able to participate in SOAP .

Couples Rank Order Lists

Each partner of a couple enrolls individually in the Match and indicates in the R3 System that they want to be included in the Match as part of a couple. (Refer to page 45 for information on how to register as a member of a couple.) The NRMP allows couples to form pairs of choices on their primary rank order lists, which are then considered in rank order in the Match. The couple will match to the most preferred pair of programs where each partner has been offered a position. Couples can be matched into a combination of programs suited to their personal needs. In creating pairs of programs, couples can mix specialties, program types (preliminary or transitional, categorical, and advanced), and geographic locations. The partners can be matched into positions in the same institution or in different institutions. Unlike single applicants, members of a couple may list a program more than once on the primary rank order list if the corresponding rank on the partners list is for a different program. By clicking View/Print Partners ROL you are able to view your partners rank order list.

Each partner must have the same number of ranks. Each ranked program must be paired with an active program or with an indication of "No Match" (NRMP Program Code = 999999999) by the other partner, which means that one partner is willing to go unmatched if the other matches to a position in the program designated at that rank.

If a partner's rank is for an advanced position, a supplemental rank order list for that program also must be prepared by that partner, unless the required firstyear program already has been completed. If both partners rank advanced positions, each partner must prepare separate supplemental rank order lists. The choices should be geographically acceptable to both partners.

If both partners match to advanced programs, their supplemental rank order lists are not treated as a unit in the Match. The coupling function is done only for the primary rank order lists of the two partners. Any supplemental lists will be considered individually and not paired with the partners corresponding supplemental list. Therefore, it is wise for partners to create supplemental lists based upon geography. If one partner wishes to withdraw from the Match, both partners must uncouple prior to withdrawal. The other partner's rank order list must be recertified and will remain in the R3 System to be used in the Match as a single candidate. Couples are encouraged to complete couples worksheets before entering choices in the R3 System. Partners registered as a couple are treated strictly as a couple. If they do not obtain matches as a couple, the matching algorithm will not run their lists separately to find a possible match for each individual. For more information about creating a couples rank order list, please visit the NRMP web site at http://www.nrmp.org. Click Residency Match, select Registration on the left menu bar and scroll down to Couples.

Shared Residency Positions

A few programs participating in the Match offer shared-residency positions. In a shared-residency, two residents share one position, usually alternating months on clinical rotations with time off to devote to families, research, or other pursuits. Applicants seeking this type of arrangement are expected to secure their own partners for participation in the shared position matching process. Each of the applicants desiring to share a residency registers individually in the Match and then contacts the NRMP at 202-828-0566 or toll-free at 1-866-617-5838 to report their intentions. A new AAMC ID will be assigned for the shared pair. Applicants entering the R3 System as a Shared Pair in the Match can participate only as a pair to be matched together to a single full-time position. These applicants cannot apply as individuals for full-time positions in the Match. If one partner of the pair withdraws from the Match, the remaining partner must inform the NRMP if she or he wants to continue participating in the Match. In this case, the remaining applicant will use his or her previously assigned AAMC ID. The two applicants submitting a Shared Residency Pair Form will be assigned a single NRMP applicant code and will be included in the NRMP applicant listing as a combined name (e.g. Jones/Smith Mary/John). Alphabetic placement is determined by the leading last name. The shared pair will submit only one rank order list to the R3 System, which should include all of the acceptable shared positions to which both applicants agree to be matched. If the pair is matched to a full-time position, both individuals are bound to accept it according to the terms of the Match Participation Agreement. To see a list of programs accepting shared-pair applicants, view the Programs Accepting Shared Pairs report found by selecting the My Reports option at the bottom of the left menu bar.

Part V: Results
The NRMP releases information about the results of the Match on the appointed Match Day. All Match results are available to applicants via the R3 System. At 1:00 PM eastern time on Match Day, applicants can find out the program to which they were matched. Matched or Unmatched Information At 12:00 noon on Monday of Match Week, applicants can learn IF they matched to a program on their rank order list by logging in to the NRMP's Registration, Ranking, and Results (R3) System using their AAMC ID and password. Applicants will be presented with one of the following messages on the Applicants Options page: 1. Congratulations, you have matched! This message will be displayed for any applicant who is "fully" matched, including:

Applicants who listed and matched to a categorical program Applicants who listed and matched to preliminary and advanced programs

Other conditions also apply. Applicants who listed only advanced programs on their certified rank order lists and did not list any preliminary positions on a supplemental rank order list will receive this message. Similarly, applicants who included only preliminary programs on their certified rank order lists will receive this statement. The matching algorithm considers an applicant "matched" if he/she lists only one program type on the certified rank order list. Applicants who receive this message may not be SOAP eligible or have access to the List of Unfilled Programs. 2. Congratulations, you have matched to an advanced position but not a firstyear position! This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to an advanced position, but did not match to a preliminary position listed on his/her supplemental rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs and may be SOAP eligible; however, applicants are not eligible to obtain a categorical position or a different advanced position. 3. Congratulations, you have matched to a one year position!

Match Outcome for All Programs by State The NRMP reports the Match Results for all programs in the Main Residency Match and posts it to the web site at 12:00 PM eastern time on the Monday after Match Week. Letters of Appointment After the general announcement of Match results, hospitals will forward letters of appointment to all applicants who have matched to their programs. Applicants are expected to return one copy of the letter of acceptance to the program before the stated deadline. Obligations Both applicants and programs are bound by the Match results. Under the terms of the Match Participation Agreement signed by all Match participants during registration, the listing of an applicant by a program on the programs rank order list and the listing of a program by an applicant on the applicants rank order list establishes a binding commitment to offer and accept an appointment if a match results. Such appointments are subject to the official employment and published policies of the employing organization in effect on the date that the program submits its rank order list. Appointments are contingent upon applicants meeting all eligibility requirements imposed by the employing organization.
