The USE of green architecture

What is green architecture?

Green building is the practice of increasing the

efficiency with which buildings use resources energy, water, and materials while reducing building impacts on human health and the environment, through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and removal the complete building life cycle.

Effective green building can lead to 1) reduced operating costs by increasing productivity and using less energy and water, 2) improved public and occupant health due to improved indoor air quality, and 3) reduced environmental impacts by, for example, lessening storm water runoff and the heat effect.

THE ROLE OF GREEN BUILDING

1 Current situation problems - Massive pollution - Overcrowding of buildings - Ecological disaster

THE ROLE OF GREEN BUILDING

To build smarter, more intelligent Recycle waste and allowing energy to pump back through the building in an efficient way

New materials : - Green roofs - Glass (silkscreen on glass) - Hempcrete (made from natural materials,
being non-toxic, and providing energy efficiency. Formed into foot-thick walls on a wooden frame, the material eliminates the need for both insulation and sheet rock. Such walls are breathable and have a pleasant, natural appearance, as well as the ability to alleviate noise pollution from the outer world. )

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S Green Council (USGBC), provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensusbased national rating system for developing highperformance, sustainable buildings. LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality.

the following: Define green building" by establishing a common standard of measurement

Promote integrated, wholebuilding design practices

Recognize environmental leadership in the building industry Stimulate green competition Raise consumer awareness of green building benefits Transform the building market

Green Building Council members, representing every sector of the building industry, developed and continue to refine LEED. The rating system addresses six major areas: Site planning

Water management

WHAT IS THE GREEN BUILDING INDEX?

The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysias industry recognised green rating tool for buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise awareness among Developers, Architects, Engineers, Planners, Designers, Contractors and the Public about environmental issues and our responsibility to the future generations. The GBI rating tool provides an opportunity for developers and building owners to design and construct green, sustainable buildings that can provide energy savings, water savings, a healthier indoor environment, better connectivity to public transport and the adoption of recycling and greenery for their projects and reduce our impact on the environment. http://www.greenbuildingindex.org/index.html

3
GBI is developed specifically for the Malaysiantropical climate, environmental and developmental context, cultural and social needs and is created to: Define green buildings by establishing a common language and standard of measurement;
Promote integrated, whole-building designs that provides a better environment for all; Recognise and reward environmental leadership; Transform the built environment to reduce its negative environmental impact; and Ensure new buildings remain relevant in the future and existing buildings are refurbished and upgraded to improve the overall quality of our building stock.

THE GBI RATING SYSTEM

BUILDINGS WILL BE AWARDED THE GBI RATING BASED ON 6 KEY CRITERIA: 1 Energy Efficiency (EE)

Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ)

Sustainable Site Planning & Management (SM) Material and Resources (MR) Water Efficiency (WE)

Innovation (IN)

1) Energy Efficiency (EE) Improve energy consumption by optimising building orientation, minimizing solar heat gain through the building envelope, harvesting natural lighting, adopting the best practices in building services including use of renewable energy, and ensuring proper testing, commissioning and regular maintenance.

2) Indoor Environment Quality (EQ) Achieve good quality performance in indoor air quality, acoustics, visual and thermal comfort. These will involve the use of low volatile organic compound materials, application of quality air filtration, proper control of air temperature, movement and humidity. 3) Sustainable Site Planning & Management (SM) Selecting appropriate sites with planned access to public transportation, community services, open spaces and landscaping. Avoiding and conserving environmentally sensitive areas through the redevelopment of existing sites and brownfields. Implementing proper construction management, storm water management and reducing the strain on existing infrastructure capacity. 4) Materials & Resources (MR) Promote the use of environment-friendly materials sourced from sustainable sources and recycling. Implement proper construction waste management with storage, collection and re-use of recyclables and construction formwork and waste. 5) Water Efficiency (WE) Rainwater harvesting, water recycling and water-saving fittings. 6) Innovation (IN) Innovative design and initiatives that meet the objectives of the GBI.

Introduction of income tax exemption equivalent to 100% of additional capital expenditure incurred to obtain Green Buiding Index certificate Buyers of buidings and residential properties awarded GBI certificate bought from real property developers are eligible for stamp duty exemption.

Eco-design is designing in such a way that the human built environment integrates benignly and seamlessly with the natural environment. Both the human-made and the natural must blend together, so there will be no pollution, no waste, no detrimental consequences on the environment.
Dr. Ken Yeang, architect

We all have responsibility. That think globally act locally thats over used so much, its real, we all must take action.
