Disaster Media Release

You have been hired by a municipal government to put together a Media Disaster Release. The disaster that you write on is the one that you picked at the beginning of the unit as the 5 th tab of your Survival and Disaster Flip Chart. You have been commissioned to produce a media release that will inform the public about the disaster. Here is what you need to produce: A 2-page (plus a title page) magazine article about the type of disaster you have chosen. A radio announcement for the impending disaster. A Find Out More page that gives a list of 5 quality resources for people to learn more about your disaster.

Magazine Article Your magazine must contain a minimum of 3 media features (timelines, side bars, graph, charts, maps, etc.), and will address the following topics: What causes this type of disaster The effects and aftermath of this type of disaster Historical examples of this type of disaster Precautions to take before this type of disaster Actions to take during this type of disaster

** Please make sure your magazine article also has a title page with a title, disaster image, and your name.** Radio Announcement Prepare a radio news report about the impending disaster near your community. Radio reports are much shorter than newspaper reports. The time limit is 10-15 seconds on the air, which about 8-10 lines of printed script. Here are your requirements: Your report is to cover the 5 Ws: Who (eye witness), What, Where, When, and Why. (5 marks) The first sentence needs to grab listeners attention and interest. (2 marks) Use words that will communicate a mood (think about our discussion from The Forest Fire). (3 marks)

When you are done, you will record it and present it to the class. This means that you need to rehearse it ahead of time to make sure your volume, expression, and speed is appropriate.

Resource Page To conclude your Media Release package, you will create a Find Out More resource page. This resource page needs the following: 5 quality web links that provide interesting and attractive information about the disaster you have choose. Each link should have a 3-5 sentence description of what one can find at that web page.
