Radhika Prout ELL Program Proposal My ELL plan for John B.

Kelly Elementary school will focus on ESL Program Models versus Bilingual Program Models. The reason being is that my schools ELL students speak many different languages (Spanish, Hindi, Malayalam and Urdu). In our case, an ESL program can better accommodate ESL students from different languages in one class without a need for the teacher to be proficient in the students home languages. We can choose from one of the following types of ESL Programs: 1. ESL Pull-Out 2. ESL Class Period 3. ESL Resource Center ESL Pull-Out is often used in elementary schools. This program works in that students spend some of their day in the mainstream classroom, while the rest of the time is spent in an ESL classroom. ESL Class Period is often used in middle school settings, where students are enrolled in an ESL course, which they receive credit for just like they would for any other class, such as Calculus. In this model students may be grouped according to their level of English proficiency. The ESL Resource Center is a similar to the pull-out design in that it brings students from several different classes together. It is a place where students can access various supplemental ESL materials and instructors are available for the students. Based on the aforementioned ESL Program Models, my plan for John B. Kelly Elementary School would be to implement an ESL PullOut program. This program would be best for this school because it is an elementary school. Currently, the school employs two fulltime ELL teachers. Mrs. Allen is the ELL teacher for students in Kindergarten and First Grade and is responsible for up to 10 students. Ms. Roberts is the ELL teacher for students in grades two through four and is responsible for up to 15 students. The pull-out program model would enable each teacher to pull out students based on their proficiency levels and/or grade levels, or even based on their home language. Below, please find the demographic charts for the ELL population at John B. Kelly Elementary.
