(Why med ordered) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Inhibits the action of histamine at the H2-receptor sites in gastric Hypersensitivity. Products containing alcohol should be avoided in pt’s parietal cells, resulting in inhibition of gastric acid secretion. w/ known intolerance. Renal impairment (more susceptible to adverse Indicated to Management of urticaria, Management of GI symptoms CNS reactions; increased dosage interval recommended if CCr <10 associated with the use of NSAIDs, ml/min Common side effects CNS: c\Confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, hallucinations, headache CV: Arrhythmias GI: Altered taste, constipation, diarrhea, nausea Hemat: Agranulocytosis, Aplastic anemia, anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal Lab value alterations caused by medicine medicines (ask patient specifically) Antagonize the effects of pentagastrin and histamine during gastric acid none secretion testing. May cause false-negative results in skin tests using allergenic extracts. Should be avoided for 24 hours before either tests. May cause an increase in serum transaminases and serum creatinine.
Be sure to teach the patient the following about this
medication May cause drowsiness or dizziness, be cautious while participating in activities that require alertness until the response to the drug is known. Advise pt to avoid foods that may cause an increase in GI irritation. Inform pt that increase in fiber, fluid, and exercise may minimize constipation. Advise pt to report onset of black tarry stools, fever, sore throat, diarrhea, dizziness, rash, confusion, or hallucinations to health care professional promptly.
