Lanolin is a mixture of cholesterol and the esters of
several fatty acids and antibiotics are present in the
lanolin. The extract is insoluble in water, but forms an
emulsion. Medical grade lanolin is used as a cream to
soothe skin. It is pure, hypoallergenic and bacteriostatic.
In this form it is used by some breastfeeding mothers on
sore and cracked nipples. As an ointment base, it is
readily absorbed through skin, facilitating absorption of
the medicinal chemicals it carries.

result in an allergic reaction in some people.

Be sure to teach the patient the following about this
medication
Use sparingly on dry nipples after breastfeeding sessions
If lanolin poisoning suspected (diarrhea, rash, swelling and
redness of skin, vomiting), discontinue use and seek
emergency medical care. Lanolin products are largely non-
toxic, but if swallowed in large amounts, intestinal blockage
can occur.
