Introduction to Feed by M.T. Anderson

Common Core State Standards met in this lesson: Standard 1: Language for Information and Understanding 2. Speaking and writing to acquire and transmit information requires asking probing and clarifying questions, interpreting information in ones own words, applying information from one context to another, and presenting the information and interpretation clearly, concisely, and comprehensibly. Students: present a controlling idea that conveys an individual perspective and insight into the topic support interpretations and decisions about relative significance of information with explicit statement, evidence, and appropriate argument revise and improve early drafts by restructuring, correcting errors, and revising for clarity and effect use standard English skillfully, applying established rules and conventions for presenting information and making use of a wide range of grammatical constructions and vocabulary to achieve an individual style that communicates effectively.

Instructional Objectives Objective: Introduce students to unit on Feed Students will: Show their understanding of the role of communication in our society through writing exercises and brief discussions. Identify the role of marketing and advertising in their lives by writing a personal response. Identify the role of technology and how it ties into both communication and marketing. Materials, Resources and Technology: PowerPoint, teachers copy of Feed, technology charts (1 per student)

Anticipatory Set: Have students write independently the answer to the following question: Imagine a place where you can communicate and receive any type of information instantly. What would a world like this be like? Teaching Input: 1) Introduce Feed and the role of technology, media, advertisements and instant gratification in the novel. 2) Compare to Ray Bradburys Fahrenheit 451, how the technology dumbs down the character and makes them more vulnerable to marketing. -Ask students to briefly summarize the main concept of F451 and the role of books. Teacher Modeling: 1) Teacher hands out a worksheet/chart with a seven-day layout, separated into different categories. -The teacher will model how many hours a day they spend using technology, then share their response from seeing the results with the class. Recapitulation or Checking for Understanding: Provide engaging questions/ prompts throughout lessonasking students to elaborate/explain/extend their answers and responses. Application: Have students look over and practice filling in their chartthey will do so independently for 5 minutes. Afterwards, they will share their results and findings with a partner for another 5 minutes. Once this is done, the class will regroup and share their overall reactions with the class. Lesson Closure: The role of communicationverbal vs. electronic, reinstating the importance of connecting F451 to the new theme of Feed.

Independent or Paired Practice: Exit Slip: On a sheet of paper, independently write how online instant messaging/email has changed the way that you communicate.

Evaluation: Homework: Students will be given a blank chart to fill out over the course of the next week to gather more accurate data on how often they use technology. The students will then write a response based on the more accurate results (if they were surprised, or found themselves cheating).
