Installing and Using Kofax Capture 8

This section contains important notes that you should review before installing Kofax Capture 8. Complete installation requirements and instructions can be found in Kofax Capture 8 Installation Guide.

Important Notes About Installing Kofax Capture 8

This section contains information about installing Kofax Capture 8. Error When Installing Kofax Capture Import Connector - Email on Microsoft Windows XP Professional If you are installing the Kofax Capture Import Connector - Email and use an account with Administrative rights, you may receive the following error message. (SPR 00015914)
You must have Administrator rights to install the Kofax Capture Import Connector Email Service.

The error message occurs because of your Microsoft Windows XP Professional local security settings. We recommend that you change to the Classic model. Refer to Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts on the Microsoft TechNet Web site for additional information. Important Note About Installing on Windows XP With Service Pack 3 If you install Kofax Capture 8 on Windows XP with Service Pack 3, you may receive the following message. (SPR 00036617)
MDAC 2.8 RTM is incompatible with this version of Windows. All of its features are currently part of Windows.

This message is informational only. To continue, click Cancel and allow the Kofax Capture installation to finish. Click Details for additional information about the message.

Important Notes About Upgrading to Kofax Capture 8

This section contains information about upgrading to Kofax Capture 8. Important Note About Upgrading With Batches in Progress If you have batches with the following characteristics and you attempt to upgrade to Kofax Capture 8 while batches are in progress in the Kofax Capture system, you will receive a batch conversion error and the batches will not convert. (SPR 00024835) 1 2 3 The batch class/document class combination has multiple release scripts assigned. More than one assigned release script uses the same release script (for example, Kofax Capture Text) and has the same name. The batch contains a document assigned to a form type that is associated with the preceding document class.

Workaround: You will need to rescan or re-import the lost batches. We recommend that you process all concerned batches prior to upgrading to Kofax Capture 8.

Kofax Capture 8 Release Notes

Important Notes About Upgrading to Kofax Capture Network Server 8

This section contains information about upgrading to Kofax Capture Network Server 8. Remote Site Profiles We recommend that you verify that the remote site profiles are configured correctly immediately following a central site upgrade. The upgrade will fail to override batch classes in the remote site profile because it is necessary to mimic the batch routing behavior that existed prior to the upgrade. Use the Assigned Batch Classes tab on the ACI Server Remote Site Profiles dialog box to assign an override of batch classes, as needed. (SPR 00024936). If you modified a remote site profile in Ascent Capture 6.0 or later to use the All batch classes option in the Assigned Batch Classes tab without removing the selected batch classes from the Assigned list, and then upgraded to Kofax Capture 8, the upgrade will automatically shift the assignment to the Selected batch classes option. You will need to manually change this option back to its proper setting. (SPR 00024939) ACIS 7.5 Remote Site Unable to Upload Batches to KCNS 8.0 Central Site Using RSA Synchronization An Ascent Capture Internet Server (ACIS) 7.5 remote site using the SQL Server database configuration cannot upload batches to a Kofax Capture Network Server (KCNS) 8.0 central site using the DB2 database configuration via RSA synchronization. You can successfully upload batches from the remote site to the central site by manually processing each batch in Batch Manager. (SPR 00033757) ACIS 7.5 Remote Site Unable to Upload Batches to KCNS 8.0 Central Site Using Oracle An Ascent Capture Internet Server (ACIS) 7.5 remote site is unable to upload batches via RSA synchronization or via manual batch processing to a Kofax Capture Network Server (KCNS) 8.0 central site using an Oracle database. (SPR 00033786) To work around this issue, do not move the central site database to Oracle until all remote sites have been upgraded.

Licensing Issues When Upgrading from VRS 3.5

After upgrading to Kofax Capture 8, your VRS 3.5 installation will be upgraded automatically to VRS 4.2. However, unless the VRS 4.2 license is properly activated, VRS will run in demo mode and a Kofax logo will be stamped on all scanned images. This occurs in the following situations: Your Kofax Capture 8 license does not include the VRS Professional license. Your VRS 4.2 Basic license has not been activated. Your VRS 4.2 Professional upgrade license has not been activated. You should follow the procedure in this section if all of the following apply to your installation: You currently have VRS 3.5 installed on your computer, and it is licensed with either a hardware key or a Kofax Adrenaline 650i scanner controller. You currently have Ascent Capture 6.x installed on your computer, and you intend to upgrade to version 8 of Kofax Capture. Your Kofax Capture 8 licensing does not include a VRS Professional license.

Kofax, Inc.

Kofax Capture 8 Release Notes

You have not activated either a VRS 4.2 Basic license or VRS 4.2 Professional upgrade license. To activate the VRS license 1 2 3 Keep your VRS 3.5 installation and hardware key or Kofax Adrenaline 650i scanner controller in place. Install Kofax Capture 8. Refer to the Kofax Capture 8 Installation Guide for information about installing Kofax Capture 8. Once the Kofax Capture installation is done, navigate to the Activate.exe file. This file is typically located in your Kofax Capture installation folder (for example, C:\Program Files\Kofax\Capture\Imgctls\Bin\Activate.exe). Double-click the Activate.exe file. The Activate VRS dialog box will display. From the Activate VRS dialog box, do one of the following: If you have a VRS 4.2 Basic license, select Upgrade from VRS 3.5 to a Basic license. When the other options on the Activate VRS dialog box become disabled, click Activate. If you have a VRS 4.2 Professional upgrade license, select Enter product identification for a license. Then, enter the part number, serial number, and product code issued with your VRS 4.2 Professional upgrade license and click Get License Code. 6 7 8 The Activate VRS dialog box will close, and a message will display to confirm successful activation. Click OK to clear the confirmation message. The Register VRS dialog box will display. From this dialog box, make certain the appropriate information is entered, and then click Register Now. Remove the VRS 3.5 hardware key (if applicable) and keep it in a secure location for future reference.

4 5

Note that the demo mode will no longer be in effect, and your scanned images will not be stamped with the Kofax logo.

Additional Details About the Kofax Capture Release

This section contains important information about Kofax Capture 8.

Enhanced Bar Code Engine

Additional licensing is required to use the Enhanced Bar Code Engine with Kofax Capture. Refer to the Kofax Capture online Help for information about the licensing requirements for the Enhanced Bar Code Engine. Note that, depending upon the setup parameters, Kofax Capture usually performs bar code recognition within the Scan module. However, in the following cases, it is necessary to defer bar code recognition to the Recognition Server module. If you plan to use the Enhanced Bar Code Engine in these cases, the computer running the Recognition Server module must have the appropriate license. If there are automatic index zones of any kind in the document class, all bar codes, including page-level bar codes, will be processed by the Recognition Server module. If there is more than one type of bar code per document class (including all page-level or zonal bar codes), all bar codes will be processed by the Recognition Server module. If there are any Recognition scripts, all bar codes will be processed by the Recognition Server module. If there is more than one form type all bar codes will be processed by the Recognition Server module. Note When only one form type is used in the batch class and only one bar code recognition profile is used for page-level zones and separator zones, then page-level bar codes are recognized in the Scan module, rather than the Recognition Server module.

Multiple Instance Support

The Multiple Instance Support feature allows you to run multiple instances of any Kofax Capture service on a single computer. Using Release Scripts with Multiple Instance Support If you want to use the Multiple Instance Support feature with the release scripts certified with Kofax Capture 8, you will need to modify the release scripts .inf file. Refer to Table 1 for the list of certified release scripts. The location of the .inf file is in your Kofax Capture installation folder (for example, C:\Program Files\Kofax\Capture\Cap). The following table references each certified release scripts .inf file.
Table 1. Release Script .inf Files Release Script Name Documentum release script .inf File DCMTRel5_v7.inf

FileNet Content Manager release script (for Content Manager 3.0 - 3.5) P8Rel3_v7.inf FileNet Content Manager release script (for Content Manager 4.0) FileNet Panagon Image Services release script P8Rel4_v7.inf ISRel3-4_V7.inf

Kofax, Inc.

Table 1. Release Script .inf Files (continued) Release Script Name IBM DB2 Content Manager Enterprise release script .inf File CMRel8_v7.inf

To edit the .inf file on the release workstation 1 2 3 4 Locate the .inf file in your release script installation directory. Make a copy of the file for backup purposes, and store the copy in a safe location. Right-click the .inf file and a context menu will display. From the context menu, select Open With. Use any text editor to edit this file. Add the following to the .inf file:
SupportsMultipleInstances=True

Note that you can add this line anywhere within the custom modules parameter section. 5 6 When you are finished editing this file, save the file. You will need to re-register your release script with Kofax Capture. a Start the Kofax Capture Administration module. The modules main screen will display. b Select Tools | Release Script Manager and the Release Script Manager dialog box will display. c From the Release Script Manager dialog box, click Add. d Browse to the modified release script .inf file. Select the file and click Open. e The Add Release Scripts dialog box will display. f From the Add Release Scripts dialog box, select the release script and click Install. g Click OK and your release script is registered. h Close the open dialog boxes to complete the process.

Changing the System Date

You must avoid changing the system date on workstations that are running Kofax Capture. If you change the system date, you may corrupt your Kofax Capture licenses.

Changes to the Kofax Capture Engines

Changes have been made to the following Kofax Capture engines and, as a result, they may produce different recognition results. High Performance Zonal Advanced OCR Zonal Advanced OCR Full Text PDF Image Only PDF Image + Text Recognition profiles using OCR Zonal are automatically converted to use the High Performance Zonal

Kofax, Inc.

Kofax Capture 8 Release Notes

Recognition profiles using OCR Full Text are automatically converted to use the Advanced OCR Full Text The following subsections contain additional information about Kofax Capture engines. Auto Rotate Feature Is Not Available in Recognition Profiles Based on the OCR Zonal Engine The OCR Zonal recognition engine was removed from Kofax Capture 8.0. After upgrading from a previous version of Ascent Capture to Kofax Capture 8.0, all recognition profiles based on the OCR Zonal engine are converted to use the High Performance Zonal engine. The OCR Zonal engine had a setting called Auto Rotate which has no corresponding setting in the High Performance Zonal engine. This may cause unexpected results in any type of OCR zone that used the OCR Zonal engine in a previous version of Kofax Capture. (SPR 00033083) As an alternative, create a recognition profile based on the Advanced OCR Zonal engine, which supports the Auto Rotate feature. OCR for Text on a Dark Background May Work Differently in Kofax Capture 8 The OCR Zonal recognition engine was removed from Kofax Capture 8.0. After upgrading from a previous version of Ascent Capture to Kofax Capture 8.0, all recognition profiles based on the OCR Zonal engine are converted to use the High Performance Zonal engine instead. For this reason, successful OCR for text on a dark background may require the background to be significantly darker than the text within it. This change affects the Light text on dark background option on the Engine and Other tab on the Advanced High Performance Zonal Settings dialog box. (SPR 00033110) Unable to Run Recognition Server on Windows Vista When SecurityBoost Is Enabled with High Performance Zonal When enabling SecurityBoost on Windows Vista and running Recognition Server where the High Performance zonal engine is used for OCR recognition, the Recognition Server fails with a message Unable to load engine. (SPR 00034786) On Windows Vista, if SecurityBoost is enabled and the High Performance Zonal engine is used, do not run the Recognition Server.

Ready to Download Status

If the central site is upgraded to the latest version of Kofax Capture while batches are listed with a status of In Progress (<site name> Ready to download) in the Batch Manager module, the batches will remain in this state until one of the following occurs: The remote site is upgraded to the latest version of Kofax Capture. The central site recalls the batches to process.

BatchUploadOption is No Longer Supported

If the BatchUploadOption setting is included in your ACConfig.xml file, it is ignored.

Kofax, Inc.

Kofax Capture 8 Release Notes

Certification for VMWare ESX 3.5

In addition to the already supported VMWare products, Kofax Capture 8 also supports VMWare ESX 3.5.

Manually Copied Global Custom Data Is Not Downloaded to Remote Sites

When new files are manually copied to the global custom data folder at a central site, they are not automatically downloaded to remote sites. (SPR 00035486) Workaround: To trigger a remote site download of new global custom data, republish a batch class or make an administrative change such as enabling User Tracking.

An hourglass symbol may be displayed for several minutes before status is displayed in the Database Utility. Oracle Data Provider Does Not Reload on Subsequent Retries in the Database Utility When installing or moving to an Oracle database, the Oracle data provider is loaded when the Database Utility is launched. If subsequent changes to the Oracle net service name or connect descriptor are made while the Database Utility is open, the Oracle data provider is not reloaded to acquire the recent changes. As a result, the database move or installation may fail. (SPR 00034839) To resolve this issue when moving to an Oracle database, close the Database Utility before making any changes to the net service name or connect descriptor. Restart the Database Utility to load the Oracle data provider. To resolve this issue when selecting an Oracle database during a clean install, do the following: 1 2 3 4 Dismiss the error message, if necessary. Close the Database Utility. Make required changes to the net service name or connect descriptor. Run AppInit.exe and repeat the configuration.

Oracle Data Provider Installation and Configuration on Vista Oracle instructions are different for Windows Vista. To install and configure the Oracle data provider on Windows Vista operating systems, refer to the installation information posted on the Oracle Web site (http://www.oracle.com.) (SPR 00035121) Client Side Encryption Causes Potential Encoding Issues on the Oracle Database Certain literal strings and application passwords are encrypted by the Kofax Capture system before being passed to the Oracle database. If the Oracle database character set is anything other than AL16UTF16 or AL32UTF8, then these encrypted literals may be interpreted incorrectly by the server and the resulting data will be corrupted. (SPRs 00034871 and 00034972) The preferred solution is to ensure that the Oracle database you are using for the Kofax Capture application is using Unicode for both the National Character Set and the Character Set. There are several methods for doing this. Refer to the Oracle Database documentation for more information. If you cannot implement the preferred solution, you can resolve the issue with the following workaround: 1 2 3 On the client machine, create a new system environment variable called: ORA_NCHAR_LITERAL_REPLACE Set the value of the new environment variable to TRUE. Restart the client machine.

The ORA_NCHAR_LITERAL_REPLACE environment variable ensures that the Unicode literal string from the client is interpreted as AL16UTF16 on the database server and is subsequently stored in the database without corruption. Perform this workaround on each Kofax Capture station that uses an Oracle database.

Report Viewer Cannot Connect to an IBM DB2 Instance Configured on a Non-Default Port The Report Viewer cannot connect to the database when using an IBM DB2 instance configured on a port other than port 50000 (the default). (SPR 00035340) Workaround: To connect, configure the IBM DB2 instance to run on port 50000.

Using Multiple Instances of Release with Release Scripts That Do Not Support Multiple Release
When a Document Class definition contains an assigned release script that does not support running multiple instances of release as a service, batches associated with that Document Class definition that contain release scripts that support multiple instances are only released by the first instance of Release. (SPR 00033513)

When Multiple Cache Folders Are Configured, KCNS Configuration Wizard Does Not Create the Upload Folder
When the ACConfig.XML file specifies multiple cache folders, the Kofax Capture Network Server (KCNS) Configuration Wizard (AcisCfgWz.exe) does not create the Upload folder and displays an Invalid directory error. Therefore, if the ACConfig.xml file specifies multiple caches, you must manually create each Upload folder before running AcisCfgWz. (SPR 00033187)

Kofax Capture 8 Installation Guide Correction on Page 17

The installation guide contains the following information on page 17: (SPR 00035124) To use Oracle Database, create an empty schema where you want to store Kofax Capture information. The user name provided when you installed Kofax Capture must have this schema set as the default schema for that user. The user must also have user rights to create objects in that schema. The following information replaces the preceding text: To use an Oracle database, create a user account that will own the Kofax Capture information. The user must also have privileges to create objects in the schema as well as quota on a default tablespace. You will provide this username and password as well as an Oracle net service name when you install Kofax Capture or move the database. In addition, the net service name must be the same on all Kofax Capture stations.

The installation guide contains the following note on page 78: (SPR 00035403) Note The Disaster Recovery feature ensures recovery of batches that were created at remote sites, but provides no recovery solution for batches created at a central site. The following information replaces the preceding text: Note The Disaster Recovery feature only ensures the backup and recovery of batches that are uploaded to a central site that has been configured for batch replication.

Kofax Capture 8 Installation Guide Correction and Addition on Page 95

The second paragraph in the Custom Data Substitution section on page 95 of the installation guide states: To substitute custom data, modify the ACConfig.xml file and the AscRelSC.inf file. AscRelSC.inf is the setup file used for Kofax Capture Release Scripts. (SPR 00035270) Custom data substitution is not confined to the provided Kofax Capture text release script and its associated .inf file, AscRelSC.inf; you can use this feature for any release script and associated .inf file that you develop. For example, suppose that you want to create and run a custom release script at a primary central site which releases documents to Server A. Then, you want to run the same release script at an alternate central site and release documents to Server B. This can be accomplished using custom data substitution. The following steps outline the process. The release script developer: Creates a section of code in the release script that adds a property to the ReleaseSetupData.CustomProperties collection, creating an internal storage string that can be used for a server name. Example: ReleaseSetupData.CustomProperties(KEY_ConnectString). Creates a setup file associated with the release script (<user_defined_name>.inf) which specifies which storage strings to use for data substitution. See the following sample setup file. MyReleaseScriptConfig.inf
[Ascent Capture Text] DataSubstitution="ConnectString"

A site administrator then uses the Kofax Capture configuration file (ACConfig.xml) to specify the old and new values for substitution. The following example substitutes a new server name for the old name. ACConfig.xml
<ACConfig> <AdminDataSubstitution> <Replace Old="http://Server_A" New="http://Server_B" /> </AdminDataSubstitution> </ACConfig>

When a user installs and registers the release script, the system uses the ReleaseSetupData.CustomProperties collection to populate the database with specified properties and their values. The data in the associated .inf file specifies which properties are candidates for substitution. When a site administrator exports a batch class from site A, and then imports it to site B, the system substitutes the new values for the old values in the database. In this case, a new server name is substituted for the old name in the ConnectString property. This property is created in the database via the release script registration process.
