Design
Precedent: The Crystal Palace Erected in Bryant park in 1853 The rst glass and steel building in America

Design
Because the tower is sited on a corner lot it becomes a hub for pedestrian trafc. -New subway entrance at the corner of 42nd and 6th. -3x the amount of public circulation space to the previous buildings on site -Through Block pedestrian passage between 42nd & 43rd

Design
Urban Garden Room on 43rd and 6th

Design
The tower will be animated by the movement of the sun and moon. This creates a dynamic changing faade that reects the context in which this crystalline shape is set.

Context
The context is very important to the design of this project in its proximity to the Chrysler Building and Bryant Park. The project also restores and improves the existing Henry Miller Theater.

Structure/Mechanical
Typical Steel Frame Construction Under Floor air distribution (so there are no ducts) Single Glazed Faade (except south facade is double glazed to reduce heat gain)

911 Issues
While this has nothing to do with the security of the building the project was largely funded by Liberty Bonds ($650 million) meant to restore the area around Ground Zero. There has been wide controversy over this issue and the project was stopped for a while. The resolution of this issue requires Bank of America to maintain a certain number of jobs in NYC.

Skyscraper Goes Platinum

The main Feature of One Bryant Park is its dedication to green innovation. The skyscraper is expected to receive the rst LEED Platinum Certication for its typology. Some general green strategies are: -LED Lights (reduce heat and electric load) -waterless urinals -composting organic waste -rainwater collection -green roofs -grey-water system
(Imagine this is platinum and says 2008)

Green Features: Rainwater Collection

It rains 49 inches of rain per year in New York. With the buildings 2 acre footprint that adds up to 2.6 million gallons of free water. Rainwater is collected off the roofs and stored in 4 tanks. It will be used to ush toilets (in a grey-water system), and irrigate green space.

Green Features: On-Site Power Generation

A 5.1 megawatt generator fueled by natural gas provides all electricity for the basic functions of the building (70%). Only ofce equipment will pull energy from the grid. Also excess heat from the generator will be used to heat the building in winter.

2.5 Megawatt Generator

Green Features: Groundwater Heat Sync

Groundwater maintains a temperature of approximately 53 degrees. A heat exchanger pulls heat out of the ground in winter (if needed) and pumps excess heat into the ground in the summer.

Green Features:Vertical Axis Wind Turbine

While 50% of the buildings energy will be purchased from green sources (wind farms in upstate New York), the smaller spire is planned to feature a VAWT. This isnt really a major energy source for the building but more of a demonstration of green technology. There are also some photovoltaic cells on the entry awning for the same reason.

Green Features: Waterless Urinals and Ultra-Low Flow Toilets

All of the buildings 200 urinals will be waterless and save about 40,000 gallons of water per year. The toilets are also to be ultra-low ow toilets.

Green Features: Under-Floor Filtered Air System

Fresh air is drawn in through vents in the 8th oor and distributed by air handling units on each oor, within an under-oor air system. There are also carbon dioxide sensors on each oor which can adjust the air ow to introduce more fresh air if needed.

Green Features: Trash Composting

Two TONS of waste per day of shredded paper and food waste from the cafeteria will be dumped into a 1000 gallon vat of organic waste seeded with bacteria. The bacteria will digest the waste and turn it into methane or biodeisel fuel which will be used to produce an extra 75 kilowatts of power (enough to power the on-site Bank of America Branch).

Green Features: Ice Cooled AC

Ice made during the night by the electrical generator is used to cool air that is then circulated throughout the building. The air comes out at oor vents which can be adjusted individually for each cubicle. This saves on cooling costs, though conventional AC may need to be used during peak hours.
