About PSPs Education Outreach

Innovative Global Education Resources
The Paradigm Shift Project (PSP) is a Canadian charity that promotes peace, environmental sustainability, and human rights on a global level by advancing education on important issues relating to poverty, ecology, health, and community development. Through the production of short documentary lms featuring local communities and grassroots organizations in the global south, PSP works to demystify the pressing environmental and social issues of our time, teaching people not only how they relate to an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world, but also how they can engage to the fullest as compassionate global citizens and advocate for environmental sustainability and social justice. Currently, to further this mission, PSP is seeking funding to continue our youth education outreach programming, in the creation and dissemination of a Paradigm Shift Educators Toolkit for use in classrooms all over the world. These new, free materials for educators include copies of PSP lms as well as detailed, age specic curricula guides that address a growing need for engaging and inspiring multimedia resources that directly confront the pressing issues facing our youth with hope and solidarity. These resources will be of great value to youth struggling to understand, connect with, and respond to global issues in constructive, sustainable ways.

The Need For These Resources

This project will provide educational resources that are not only needed, but also necessary for students and educators. In both developed and developing countries, youth are increasingly affected by and involved in global social and environmental justice issues. It is the responsibility of educators, then, to ensure that youth are equipped with the knowledge and critical thinking skills required to cope with, address, and tackle these social and environmental issues. Such issues, however, develop and change rapidly. According to a number of education professionals who maintain working relationships with PSP, education systems currently lack up-to-date, innovative resources that utilize the media arts to relate to students in meaningful, sustained ways. Due to signicant budget and time limitations, especially toward the arts, educators cannot create these resources themselves, and they may lack the funds necessary to continually update their materials. Indeed, this is the case in many education contexts across the globe. As such, electronic versions are made available via our website to hold relevance to many educators globally. Providing educators with a current resource such as PSPs Educators Toolkit enhances education, by enabling educators to create a safe, sustainable forum for youth to learn, consider, analyze, discuss and connect with these issues. It is important that we empower our youth to contribute to positive global change in a safe, constructive, collaborative, effective fashion, especially since they are the next generation of changemakers. With regards to this project, Greening the Island of the Gods, the issue of waste management is relevant to communities all over the world. The case study of Bali and the solutions being implemented there offers timely and important lessons for both the developing and developed world alike, teaching youth to care for the earth and seek appropriate information and action for their own communitys waste management practices.

The Educators Toolkit

This project equips educators with a teachers resource package that includes a roughly fortypage, grade-specic curricula guide for four grade divisions (Gr. 1-4, 5-8, 9-12, and Postsecondary), along with a copy of the lm. This toolkit will contain a variety of materials that enable educators to use PSP lms in their classrooms, including but not limited to: Suggested lesson plans Classroom activities to deepen students understanding of the issues addressed by community members in the lms and to demonstrate the relevance of these issues in their lives Discussion questions to help stimulate critical thinking Activities that allow students to engage and take positive action Sample assignments and test/exam questions relating to issues present in the lm Additional geographic, demographic, theoretical, and conceptual information A bibliography of recommended resources for further research Suggestions of ways to incorporate PSP lms into existing curricula expectations and requirements for such courses and/or topics as economics, languages, world issues, lm/media studies, politics, sociology, global citizenship, history, environmental studies, science, and biology Ways to interact with other students around the world on the topic

Creation & Distribution

This toolkit will be created by PSPs Education Outreach Team in collaboration with undergraduate Concurrent Ed student interns from the University of Toronto, and graduate students at New York University. Once completed, the curricula will be evaluated through pilot in-class workshops in Toronto and Bali, to ensure the efcacy and applicability of our resources in different classroom contexts. In these workshops, PSP facilitators will demonstrate the curricula with the participation of local teachers. Both oral and written feedback will be solicited from students and teachers, after which appropriate revisions will be made to the curricula. We aim to conduct at least ve workshops per grade division, equaling twenty in total, between January and March 2013, with the nal versions of the Educators Toolkits to be prepared for dissemination in April 2013 in online electronic format. Print versions with accompanying DVDs may be created and distributed as well if funding and/or a donation in kind is received for this purpose. This resource will be fully bilingual, available in English and Indonesian. PSPs Education Outreach Team now works in schools in Canada, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the UK, and the US. Schools and Universities in North America and Indonesia have already made PSPs lms a part of their curriculum, including The Green School in Bali, Rousseau Lake College in Muskoka, The University of Toronto, York University, Cornell University, and New York University.
