ABOUT BHUTAN ThekingdomofBhutanliesintheeasternHimalayas,betweenTibet(China)tothenorthand Indiatothesouth,eastandwest.Thekingdomhasatotalareaofabout38.980sq.km.Bhutan isalandlockedcountrywithatotalpopulationof680,000.ThimphuisthecapitalofBhutan andhasapopulationofapproximately90,000.ThenationallanguageofBhutanisDzongkha andEnglishisalsousedasanofficiallanguage. VENUE The conference will be held in the campus of Nazhoen Pelri complex n the Harmony i Village , located in the heart of the city of Thimphu, the capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan. Those coming by flight will land atParoInternational Airport. It is approximately one hour drivefromtheairportandmaximum10minutesfromthedesignatedhotels. MODE OFTRANSPORATION ThereareseveralwaystoentertheKingdomofBhutan. BY ROAD : Those planning to come by road can enter from the Indian borders from two points in the northeasternstates: huentsholing andSamdrup Jongkhar. Sincethe conference venueis P in Thimphu, it is practically more convenient to enter from Phuentsholing since it is the closestboarder town fromThimphu. Phuentsholing is about fourhour drive fromSilguri i andBagdogra.Thimphuisanother fivehour drive fromPhuentsholing.Thosewhowantto take a break of one night there before taking the journey to Thimphu can stay at Hotel Centennial 2008(rooms from US$ 30 to 45; refer to SSEASR Conference; email: hotel_centennial@hotmail.co.uk)ThereareregulardirectpublicbusesfromPhuentsholing toThimphu.ThetimingswillbeputupintheThirdAnnouncementinlateMarch,2011. BY AIR: Bhutan can be entered by air onlythroughtheflightsofDrukAir from Bangkok, Kathmandu,Delhi,GuwahatiandKolkatta. The nearest airport to Phuntsholing is Bagdogra near the town of Siliguri in West Bengal, India. Other thanKathmandu and Paro route, only DrukAir operates where as BuddhaAir alsooperatesfromKathmandu,Nepal. ParoairportisconnectedbyfourairportsinIndia:Delhi, Kolkata ,Guwahati andBagdogra, a point famous for visit to Darjeeling and Sikkim. The other airports are Bangkok , Dhaka , andKathmandu .  VISA The visa for the Kingdom of Bhutan has some specific rules. However, those coming to the Conferencewillreceiveaspecialvisafacility.Thosewithourinvitationwillbeissuedaspecial permit valid for entry at the entry points. Thai nationals who carry official or diplomatic passport do not need a visa, but Thai nationals holding ordinary passports will need a visa to enter Bhutan. Indian nationals do not need a visa and will be issued a permit upon presentationofourinvitation. This specialconference visa will be given only 9days , (startingfromJune28toJuly6) for whichincludesthedayofarrival,onedayfamiliarization,thefourdaysoftheconference,the twodaysaftertheconferenceandthedepartureday.Theearliestdateofentrywiththisvisa isnotbefore28thofJuneandcannotbeextendedbeyond9daysfromthedateofarrival.Ifyou are intending to stay beyond this duration you will required to paythe usualtourist be tariff of US$250 per day (inclusive of accommodation, meal and travel arrangements). Therefore,participantsarerequestedtoplantheirtripwithusinadvance. Confirmedparticipantswillbesentaspecialvisanumber letter email .Youhavetocarry by itsprintandyouwouldberequiredtodepositonetimevisafee ofUS$20in cash for your ENTIRE duration of stayonarrivalpoints.Apartfromthe nvitation letter i ,twopassport sie photographs and the visa letterthe only document required is a confirmed return z , air ticket . The participants will need to provide us ascannedcopyoftheirpassports45daysbeforethe conference.
