Mon Top 10 Badasses of the Worlds Special Forces January 11, 2010 Share by FlameHorse 1,308 Comments

In honor of a recent list of cheesy 80s actioners, here is a list for us James Bond wannabes. This list looks at 10 of the special forces from around the world that have the honor of being the most elite and consequently badass. Feel free to mention your own favorites in the comments which will no doubt include a lot that are not listed here. 10 Spetsnaz

Whereas most of the training regimens of militaries around the world are designed to teach, Russias Special Purpose Regiments, equivalent to the U. S. Green Berets, endure punishment daily throughout their training. They may quit anytime they want. The Spetsnaz want only the best, pain-hardened, battle-loving killers. They spar with the express goal of injuring each other, breaking ribs, fingers, vertebrae, healing only long enough to get back on their feet and complete the training. They are typically deployed for reconnaissance or house-to-house close quarters combat, but are also employed as extremely formidable bodyguards for high-ranking politicians. They claim that they are not taught to ignore pain, since that is impossible. They are instead taught to enjoy it. 9 French Naval Commandos

They call themselves berets verts, or green berets, and consist of 6 units: Hubert, Trepel, de Montfort, de Penfentenyo, Jaubert, and Kieffer. Each unit is trained for special tasks, whether combat diving, close quarters sea combat, exfiltration, canine units, or long range fire support, including snipers and missile launchers. They were established much at the behest of JacquesYves Cousteau, who was a naval officer in WWII. 8 MARSOC

Currently, only men are allowed to try out for the U. S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command. Its primary missions are typically special reconnaissance, direct action, and internal defense within foreign nations.

Their training regimen is comprised of 4 phases, increasing in strenuousness. Phase 1 is SERE training, survival, evasion, resistance, escape. They are trained to make fire by friction, fire by mirrors, even fire by ice, depending on the location to which they are deployed. You mold the ice with the heat of your hands into the shape of a lens, which works just like a magnifying glass. Of course, they take matches and Zippos with them. After this, they begin physical fitness training, and hand-to-hand combat, practicing a hybrid of the most functional martial arts: Jeet Kune Do, Wing Chun, Karate, Jiu-Jitsu, even Pankration. Then, Sayoc Kali, which is Filipino knife fighting. This is just phase 1. Phase 2 is marksmanship, amphibious demolitions, reconnaissance. Phase 3 is a contrinuation of 2, but with the addition of field radioes and satellite data-uplink systems. Phase 4 is irregular warfare instruction, which is a euphemism for anything goes. This phase consists primarily of the Derna Bridge operation, which forces the recruits to use all skills acquired during the course. 7 MI-6

The closest thing to James Bond can be found in the personnel of the UKs Secret Intelligence Service, or Security Service, section 6. It works in close partnership with section 5 (MI-5), the latter which is more of a pure spy agency, dedicated to counter-intelligence and counterespionage. MI-6, however, is the unit which deploys its agents all over the world to detect international intelligence threats and neutralize them before they become truly dangerous. Their headquarters is at Vauxhall Cross, London, and they will be quick to tell you there that there is no James Bond among them, and that their assignments and missions are quite boring.

They do, however, have an agent very similar to Q, who is in charge of all equipment and weaponry deployed for each operation. They also have indoor firing ranges, dojos, and a gym. 6 U. S. Army Rangers

After basic Army training, voluntary enlistment into the 75th Ranger Regiment will train the recruit for the HALO parachute jump, SERE, languages, elite combatives expert, mountain warfare, combat diving, in addition to all the weapons qualification training. After nine weeks of this, they enroll in Advanced Individual Training, to become masters of their chosen fields, then immediately enroll in the Army Airborne School, then in Ranger Indoctrination or Orientation Programs. By the time theyve graduated, theyre so well trained that members have reported waking up screaming from nightmares about Ranger school to be relieved that they are only in Vietnam. But then, they lose a few points for an incident a Ranger told me about: he was the captain of a tank regiment on maneuvers in the Amazon jungle. Just an exercise, but because of the sweltering heat, they had to open their tank hatches. This captain, who shall remain nameless, heard a thump behind him, and turned to see a Goliath Bird-eating Spider crawling toward him, raising its front legs and hissing. He admits to screaming like a girl, knifing the tarantula, jumping out of the tank and running off into the jungle for a mile and a half. His buddies still rib him about it.

U. S. Army Green Berets

Thats their nickname. Technically they are the U. S. Army Special Forces, as opposed to the special forces of other countries, many of which also wear green berets. Typically, the Green Berets are trained to administer unconventional warfare, which entails infiltrating a hostile area in anticipation of a large-scale military engagement, and training the local resistance populations to fight back against the enemy. This was done in South Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan, among others. In the event that there is no local resistance to the enemy, the Green Berets infiltrate and soften up the enemy by neutralizing as many of its officers as possible. This usually involved sniping and throat cutting. Training is very extensive and begins with the Armys assessment of the recruits possession of 12 attributes: intelligence, physical fitness, motivation, trustworthiness, accountability, maturity, stability, judgment, decisiveness, teamwork, influence, and communications. 40% of applicants satisfy the Army that they have these attributes. Final training consists of various endurance courses, carrying heavy backpacks over 40 miles of rugged terrain, with nothing but a live chicken and a knife, day and night. If the recruit can make a fire, he can eat the chicken cooked. He is not given matches or a lighter. He is allowed only a compass and his own hand-drawn map, completed from earlier reconnaissance courses. 4 The Delta Force

The only official United States counter-terrorism unit, dedicated to hostage rescues, counterinsurgency, and general counter-terrorism. Theyre full name is 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta, managed by the Army. Selection is done according to a physical fitness test: situps, pushups, followed by a 3-mile run, in an undisclosed time limit. Then an all-night, 18-mile hike over mountainous terrain with a 35 lb backpack and a compass, no map. This finally culminated with a 40-mile hike with a 45 lb backpack, in a shorter time limit. Then psychologists conduct a grueling battery of mental exams on the recruit to try to break him into confusion. If he passes this, he actually gets to begin Delta Force training, for 6 months. Firearms, heavy weaponry, elite hand-to-hand training. 3 Shayetet 13

The name means Flotilla 13, and their official motto is the same as the Israeli military: Never Again, in reference to the Holocaust. Their unofficial motto, as they like to joke, is When the going gets tough, the Jews get pissed. They are 1 of the 3 most elite Israeli special forces units, but Shayetet 13 is the unit most similar to the Delta Force. They specialize in hostage rescue and counter-terrorism, and because they live so close to a host of nations that seem bent on eradicating them, they are at all times ready in an instant to travel abroad and kill. They are very secretive, but of their missions publicized, the most notable include Operation Spring of Youth, in which they hunted down members of Black September in Beirut Lebanon and killed them, in revenge for the 1972 Munich massacre. Apart from their firearms and heavy weapons training, they train extensively in Krav Maga, the national martial art of Israel, to which they endearingly refer as Jew-jitsu. Its philosophy is based on the principle that in a real street fight no quarter will be asked or given. Fight to kill. Groin strikes are quite prevalent. 2 Navy SEALs

You might think there are a lot of them, given the number of action movies dedicated to the plot device of an invincible warrior, but there are only about 2,000 of them. They are the Unites Statess most elite special warfare combatants. They are trained in all the fields in which the other U. S. special forces are trained, but to an even higher degree of competency. SEAL training lasts over a year, and requires an age of between 17 and 28 years, male, incorrect vision no worse than 20/200 in either eye, and correctable to 20/20, and the physical screening test, which is beyond belief. 500 yd (460 m) swim using breast or combat sidestroke in under 12:30 with a competitive time of under 10:30. At least 42 push-ups in 2 minutes with a competitive count of 79 or more. At least 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes with a competitive count of 79 or more. At least 6 pull-ups from a dead hang (no time limit) with a competitive count of 11 or more. Run 1.5 mi (2.4 km) in boots and trousers in under 11:30 with a competitive time of 10:20 or less. Then training begins. Physical conditioning, diving, land warfare, for 24 weeks, then 26 more weeks of SEAL qualification training. Then specialization in whatever fields a SEAL team needs expertise in: anything from sniper to language specialist, rope climbing, diving, jumpmaster, surreptitious entry, dynamic entry (door breacher), etc. 1 British SAS

The Special Air Service is trained to perform equally well in all the fields listed for the SEALs, but is also trained by MI-5 and MI-6 for in-depth counter-espionage, more so than the SEALs. Physical competency must be of equal stature to the SEALs, to the degree that both special forces work closely together when necessary (Iraq and Afghanistan) and have good camaraderie. They wear a tan beret, just as the U. S. Army Rangers, and both the SAS and SEALs are trained in knife fighting by experts in Apache Indian knife techniques, as well as Sayoc Kali, Krav Maga, Jeet Kune Do, and for the last 3 years or so, the Keysi Fighting Method, made famous by the Chris Nolan Batman films. They have the distinction of being the model on which almost all national commando units are based today, including every other entry on this list. Like this list? kaus Indian / 29 Nov, 1999 at 05:00 pm well NSG commandoes from India showed exemplary bravery when Hotel Taj was attacked in Mumbai. so u really cant ignore them. besides we are a population of 1.3 bilion. 4times the pop. of USA so we naturally have greater base for selection and hence better competition & better special forces. Metempiric / 30 Jan, 2012 at 07:18 pm I thought the Gurkhas were the supreme jungle fighters? Theyre considered number 1, followed by the Japanese and then the Vietnamese. Reply

Hundreds of years of martial expertise has been handed down to the English forces , their skills honed from way back in history and learned by their forefathers as Albion took the greatest empire ever. Practice makes perfect my friend .. and nobody has more than the Brits. Reply

Did not help them much when they fought the Boers in South Africa and though outnumbring the enemy by 15 to 1 AND outgunning them, they still had to burn their farms and put their women and children in camps to eventually after 3 years of fighting subdue them.Doesnt say much for their fighting genes does it? MAR.S.O.C. / 29 Nov, 1999 at 05:00 pm yea all you guys are gay fags and MAR.S.O.C. should at least be first and if not atleast in front of the navy seals Reply

Thompson / 26 Dec, 2011 at 08:25 pm Wel this list is simply all on a persons favoritism to seals. One sas ya should b there but delta should b next then seal team6 then green beret then seals and ranger and marsoc should be on the same level rangers r better than standard marines but marsoc is on their level. But delta force does what rangers, seals, sas, sf, marsoc, and seal team 6 does. Delta has the highest rate of failure, and u dont ask them to join like every other one on this list does. They ask you to join. They do standard infantry patrols n guarding to all the way to training others to even going in the black spectrum of the ops like marsoc. In delta u r both and expert

and professional at close quarters as to being the best snipers. All of the facts on here arent even close to what they really are. Reply

Matthew van der Lee / 30 Dec, 2011 at 03:12 am I agree with you having all of those American Special Forces on this list is a waste of picks. He/she forgot to include GROM, JTF-2, and the Israeli Commandos. It doesnt make any sense that the Green Berets and Marsoc, and even the Rangers made the list when the three that i stated didnt. All of the ones that I stated are extremely elite forces, Rangers are not. They are just a elite light infantry unit. Green Berets are the same thing and so are Marsoc. The ones that I stated are all tier 1 or 2 SOF which specialize in Counter-Terrorism. Some of the picks on this list are inadequate to the ones that I mentioned. Reply

Metempiric / 30 Jan, 2012 at 07:21 pm MI6 shouldnt be there either. Theyre not an elite fighting force, theyre a security agency, same as the CIA or Mossad. Instead of MI6, he should have included the SBS, and they should be at number 1 with the SAS at number 2. I understand that only Royal Marines can join the SBS and those that fail can still join the SAS as the SBS selection is much tougher than the SAS. Reply

Azza / 8 Mar, 2012 at 05:18 am Although i agree the SBS should be above the SAS, purely because they do everything the SAS do and more because they are an amphibious special forces. You are however wrong when you say only Royal marines can apply for SBS, anyone who has been in the military for a certain amount of time is entitled to apply for either SAS or SBS,

although a large proportion of SBS is made up from Royal marines and Para and the same with the SAS.

andrew / 12 Feb, 2012 at 10:40 am not even close seal team six is the top military tier one unit. the best of the best though is the c.i.a sad sog they are the top dogs Reply

Jake / 27 Feb, 2012 at 01:24 am @MAR.S.O.C. Nah, dude. Actually, out of all the U.S. (not the world, just U.S.) Special Forces, MAR.S.O.C. doesnt really come near the top. And I like how you say at least first. Is there even a position better than being first? And also, you felt the need to point out that they should be atleast in front of the navy seals. Lol. Dude, the SEALS are the most elite of all U.S. Special Forces. You may have had a case if you had referenced the Army Rangers or something, but look you like a retard by referencing the top dog. Face it, youre mad not because you REALLY think MAR.S.O.C. is better than everything, but because youre most likely in the USMC, and are offended that someone put the SEALs ahead of your beloved MAR.S.O.C. That actually makes a lot of sense because Marines tend to be a bunch of misfits with a hot***** attitude because their branch is SUPPOSED to be the most elite. It was, but I dont think it is anymore. And yes, I realize that Im responding to a 12 year old comment. Reply

David Schkolnik / 3 Jul, 2010 at 09:24 am they went anarmed , one by one, into a ship supposedly full of civilians. They were received by a crowd of trained terrorist armed with lethal weapons: knives, lances and heavy wrenches. Imagine the courage of the second commando going down. He sees his partner lynched by the crowd, and he's going down from the chopper unarmed. In the end, the anarmed commandos kicked their ass. And the whole world went crying like only Palestinians cry. First you hit, then you cry. Next time the ship will be sunk. If you want to do filantropy, do it in Haiti (along with Israel), where Trukey never sent aid, and not with the overfed Gaza terrorist. All the cargo carried by the flotilla does not amount for a 1 day supply that goes through the border from Israel daily, and is targeted by Hamas government sometimes. You either don't know what you are talking about or you are lying. Reply

Josh / 17 Dec, 2010 at 04:16 am Yes, the Israeli Terrorists were unarmed. That's why the civilians were shot? One of those civilians was Australian. They were in international waters, the military action taken by Israel was ILLEGAL. The CIVILIANS on board were well within their rights to attack. Reply

matityahu / 26 Dec, 2010 at 06:09 am When you live in a country that has no other choice, then come back and comment on this. When you're the parent of a boy or girl that goes off to serve in the army, because your nation has no other choice other than get annihilated, see if you'll say the same thing. Israel's not perfect, or immune to making mistakes far from it! But the difference between Israel and [most] other countries in the world is that Israel can't afford to be cautious. This site isn't supposed to be a discussion about Israel's politics, Josh, or any of you who are arguing either for OR against Israel. It's just supposed to show us all the cool badasses out there. There are plenty of other sites for you to express your opinions about Israel.

Im guessing that because of youre stupid remark, you are probably american and have no idea how to world really works. But thats ok, because if we all had been intelligent, we wouldnt have anyone to make fun of. But to my point: dont turn to anti-semitism just because you live in a country that have started the most pointless wars through the history.

primus / 2 May, 2011 at 02:54 am And that has anything to do with this blog because? And if were talking terrorists here, I believe the Nazi party that your beloved JEWISH leader Adolf Hitler ran would be classed as terrorists themselves. Do your research child.

Ashmit Dev / 7 Feb, 2011 at 06:36 am It was God Almighty himself who came to the rescue of the poor unarmed jewish commandos; Come off it, do you really belief in that stuff. Did the poor unarmed commandos fire from their arse to kill the Turk civilians ???? Reply

bronzezeus / 19 Jul, 2011 at 02:55 am Im sick of the US having to look after israel because its like an assole brat younger brother who is brainless and sick in the head. The US and americans have to take slack because we support israel from the whole world and i have a message for the idiots from israel who say they dont need the US. You brainless pieces of ***** if the US didnt support you all the countries in the world would first ***** and ***** on you then crush you like a bug. So dont be ungrateful and bite the hand that feeds you. Israel needs the US like a parasite needs a host and israel is the parasite. Jews were ungrateful to God and now ungrateful to the US who protects them. Reply

They are neighboured by hostile nations and have been in so many wars.imagine you where beetwen two nation that hated you then your nation would be militaristic.

Metempiric / 30 Jan, 2012 at 07:33 pm Really? And yet theres no record of any Palestinian state before the land was given to them AFTER the (re)creation of Israel on that same land. Israel was there first. Palestine shouldnt exist. Its like the UN giving land in Virginia to the US worst enemies. Its the same thing. It wouldnt happen to the mighty US, but little Israel, alone and surrounded by enemies, well, it was easy to force Palestine on them. You could claim its not really their land as you dont recognise the authority of the UN, but the rest of the world would recognise it. And when that small area of Virginia starts launching terrorist attacks and suicide bombers, what

would you do? Let it happen because theyre a sovereign state? Or start taking extreme action? Israel is doing exactly what any other nation faced with the same situation is doing.

JTF2 wants no recognition for any of their work, if they had it their way, no1 would even know they exist. JTF2 is one of the most highly trained forces in the world. Unlike other countries there is only 1 elite group, not 5 different special forces. The reason most people havent heard of them or dont know much about them is because they keep it that way Reply

Jostein Mark, Norway / 28 Feb, 2011 at 12:06 pm Idiot you dont know much about special forces if that is your argument, any one can be trained to do 100push ups, what the ***** diffrence does if you can do a 100 push ups or not in fire fight.. Its your traning as a team and your brain that matters in a good special forces soldier. And in traning, they dont care about the push ups lol, its if you can walk with a 30kg back pack for 50km without taking back problems or so and still can finish your mission. Bacicly most countries like UK, Norway, france and usa CO, so their traning is the same. Its just that some have diffrent missions than others like recon and counter terror attacks for example. Really, the diffrence between special forces is not that huge, their all well trained. Reply

Name / 30 Mar, 2011 at 12:01 am Being Canadian I love the shout out and by the way this is written your probably just some 10 year old kid but you need to get your facts right!, first off you do not need to be in special ops to get into JTF2, any member of the Canadian forces can apply for selection with 2 years of active duty service or 3 years in the reserves. Secondly you dont have to do 100 push ups, the push up aspect is done on the physical fitness test long before you ever make it to selection and you only need 40 to pass, lastly you dont stay with them till you die, after the special operators course which lasts a total of 9 months you will sign a contract for 4 years after that its totally up to you, and I dont have to look it up all of this is straight from the JTF2 recruiting site, thanks for your time. WAURIO / 21 Nov, 2010 at 01:17 pm Everyone should really just shut up. The way that the Israelis have fought off ALL the countries surrounding them is just an insane feat. I believe that the Israelis have one of the best military forces in the world because EVERY SINGLE PERSON is trained to be in their military, with the percentage of active members in the military at 6.45%, which ranks 5th out of 163 countries involved. This is only behind N. Korea, Eritrea, Singapore, and Brunei respectively. You may have noticed that the only legitimate force out of those four is North

Korea. Israel also has the most advanced Nuclear Missile program in the Middle East, and while this is only the Middle East it does help to fuel efforts by surrounding countries to overtake Israel. But the main reason that all the surrounding countries want to capture Israel is because of their religious beliefs and the relics that they have on their grounds that are worshipped by religions all over the world, so this means that they are constantly fighting off Muslim attacks on their country. Like I mentioned before, the reason that they gave not been overpowered is because their ENTIRE population has been trained in their system of warfare and their insane form of martial arts, Krav Maga, which dominates other forms of close combat warfare. By the way, I'm American and Catholic so don't try calling me a defensive Jew. Reply

Proud Christian Friend of Israel / 22 Jan, 2012 at 10:12 am I am sick of you morons spouting this crap. First of all no force is perfect so of coarse all armies have killed civilians by accident. That is why the term colattera damage exists. Secondly Israel is not perfec so they too have had this unfortunate byproduct of every war in history. But the truth is that the Palestinians (which as stated earlier are actually Jordanians and Syrians) after murdering women and children then go and hide behind their own women and children using them as human shields. This has historically been the cause of the vast majority of all palestinian civilian deaths. As opposed to all (100%) of the women and children shot or blown up deliberately by the PLO or Hamas or whatever they call themselves. Murder of civilians is all the terrorists do. Its their bread and butter so to speak. In fact even the regular armies of the surrounding Arab countries are primarily murderers of cilvilians including rocket attacks and tanks firing on civilian targets. And as far as I am concerned as a good Christian, any deaths that have occured as a result of a country and a people that has been forced to defend their very existence from its first day are justified. The fact is their are several deserving special units that werent mentioned, such as Australian SAS, South African Commandos, Rhodesian Army, German GSG-9 and Gurkas just to mention a few. I think the list is close- (Not) but I do think highly of a few.. Take the girt of Spetnaz mixed with Marine. Then the counter intelligence of SAS, then close quarter battle of GSG-9/ Israeli Commandos, tactics of Delta Force/ Seals and finally jungle combat/survival of Rhodesia/ South African Commandos. Im pretty sure you would finally have a perfect soldier but until then God Bless America and your country too. Reply

Jon / 30 Nov, 2010 at 04:24 am The physical requirements listed are the bare minimum to even be allowed to start training. 50 pushups in 2 minutes? Easy. My brother did phase 1 selection with the SAS as a member of the reserves <21 SAS(R)> he could do over 20 hand down pullups and about 100 pressups without stopping before he even went to training Most of the SAS training is about mental strength and perseverance and being able to walk the funk anywhere. After 30 days of full-on phy beat-up sessions and long range patrols the final task is exercise long drag which is 40 miles through proper mountain country (one is the valleys is named VW and if you can't figure that one out I can't help you!) in 20 hours or less carrying a rifle, helmet and finishing without 55lbs in your pack (i.e., not including the 15lbs of water and food you had during the trip). Daniel / 12 Dec, 2011 at 01:57 am Just a little history lesson, we didnt entice the Japanese! Second we entered the war when Britain was surrounded by U-Boats,

which then America was still willing to send fleets of supplies to Britain when Hitlers Nazi U-Boats controlled the Atlantic. They (Nazis) had all Atlantic sea ports in main land Europe and we still invaded Normandy! Once we did the war took a drastic toll for the Germans. Why didnt we enter the war early? The reason is simple, it wasnt our war to fight until Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor, which after the commanding Admiral of the Japanese Imperial Navy, Isoroku Yamamoto said, I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve. We beat you in the Revolution, we dominated the treaty after the War of 1812, and to this day we are still militarily the great power on the planet. With that said our country/government has not allowed our military to fight a war since because we are kowtowing to Nations that have no respect for what we have done for them! A thank you would be nice and a little respect for those, both British, American, Israeli and any other military that sacrificed lives to rescue those who were unwilling to fight for themselves! Reply

Elo / 1 Mar, 2012 at 06:57 pm Hitler caused his own demise, he decided to fight on 2 fronts and take on Russia advancing his army too far with a lack of supplies, I dont think anyone in England would say you didnt help us, but yea to say you saved us is just arrogance!! Aaand you beat us in the revolution at a time we were already fighting in the Napoleanic War and saw your fight for independence as more of a side fight, an inconvenience but even so we had to travel across the Atlantic which will have taken weeks to do,resulting in fatigue, sickness and vulnerability on arrival. At that time, like it or not, we were the worlds most powerful military force, obviously not anymore like but we were. Either way the Americans and British work together on almost everything anyway

ExMilitary / 10 Jan, 2010 at 10:18 pm This list has some inaccuracies in it. First within the American Special Operations Command there are units like Marine Recon, Army Rangers ( sometimes airborne/air assault units ), Navy DEVGRU, Air Force Para Rescue, Army Green Berets, and Psychological Operations ( usually an army unit ). Then there is the Joint Task Force Delta. Delta is so much harder to get into than the Seals. You usually have to be a seal, Green Beret, or Ranger to even be asked to try out for Delta. So they obviously have the best equipment, training, and personnel. They will beat any other American Spec Ops unit on a unit to unit comparison. Then there is the Green Beret/ SEAL Debate. The SEALS and Green Berets are both highly skilled operators. This is what they do operate some of the best equipment in the world and follow some of the best theoretical and tested techniques available. SEALS are primary short deployment and water based infiltration. Green Berets are longer deployment ( and any moron who says they are just trainers does not know anything at all ) and air based infiltration. High Altitude Low Opening jumps. They both fight in some nasty environments. Seals are like a razor blade, and the Green berets are like a chemotherapy treatment. So if there is a crime the seals are a fast and precise force. If there are terrorist of guerrilla warfare involved that need 4 months plus to eradicate the green berets don't stop until the enemy is at it's knees. They are equal in their own ways. Number one on this list should be the millions of small poverty stricken people who fight every day of their life in Africa, Middle East, Former USSR. They grow up tough and do not train to be tough. Training will never be able to emulate a life's worth of experiences. This is why guerrilla warfare poses a huge threat to every powerful elite unit in any military. We have seen this in Bosnia, Vietnam, Burma, and now Africa and the Middle East (Al-Qaeda that fought against the Russians in Afghanistan). The best fighter in the world is a poor person from hell. They have nothing to loose. Reply

brian / 6 Jun, 2010 at 04:06 am

Great narrative and very true. One thing though, Force Recon Marines can be in Delta. As matter of fact Marines are the only service that can join any elite American force if they want to get out of the beloved Corp's. and for some reason join another stinky Army unit. You are very true about the people who struggle, they are tough and don't have any technology we do! Were you in the Army or another service other than the Corps.? I ask only because your name is exmilitary, not former. Reply

Sue / 22 Aug, 2010 at 07:52 pm re: the US Army SF yah, they sure are more than trainers. Their brief includes direct action, long-range recon (= being dropped in their 12-man ODAs as far into enemy territory as helis will fly, and belly-crawling 20 klicks farther in), counterterrorism, unconventional warfare, anti-narcotic***** actions, and black ops that, well, we don't know about. Throatslitting is right. I have a friend who's ex-Army SF, and though he's safe as houses to me, a fellow citizen, I know he has killed "the enemy" with knives, grenades, .60-caliber machine guns, shotgun, semi-auto rifle, and likely his hands. How many I don't want to know, but even at the minimum, or two per weapon mode, that's not schoolteaching I want to be on the learning end of, or even learn about. And it was more than the minimum. He didn't like killing per se, but he loved being a soldier, and that kind of soldier is essence o' soldier they kill what their government deems a threat. I could not do it. I do not like the necessity of it, and question specific instances. And I am safe from both while such as he stand between me and them. For good or evil, or more likely both; but while it is my good and other people's evil, it does not really behoove me to moralize on the topic, and I will not. Reply

Titty Launcher / 22 Oct, 2010 at 05:02 pm True and not true. Guerilla fighters are a definite threat and have alot of experience, but no training. And if they do have training, it's very poor training. Many special forces units have years of combat experience and such under their belt that they indoctrinate into their training programs. In a way, you're correct. But also, you have to consider why these special forces do so well and why they're called upon to deal with such threats. Everyone trains

the same way, special forces usually employ guerilla tactics because they work. But they train to a super human standard almost, as compared to small time local guerilla forces. Good point though, mate. Reply

randell / 24 Dec, 2010 at 10:44 pm i agree that delta force is harder to get accepted but the navy seals have a higher failure rate they also train for much longer then the delta force which only trains for about 8 months the seals train for 2 years. and everything delta force learn seals learn i know many ex military some of which are seals and one was delta force and they all say seals are better. all of which agree that no military unit in the world train as hard as the navy seals hell week alone will make any man a a P%%sy Reply

Ex Frogman / 6 Jan, 2011 at 05:40 am The attrition rate attributed to the Navy SEALs, when compared to other SOF units is skewed, and for good reason. Firstly, an aspirant is able to opt for BUDs straight from boot camp In other words, straight from 'civvy street'. The toughest thing that many of these guys have had to endure (prior to BUDs) is waiting for a bus in the rain. Even the guys who have spent time in the fleet prior to training have never experienced any of the rigours associated with field work/military training. With the Army special forces (Green Berets), a large percentage of the aspiring canditates are already either Ranger qualified, or troops already serving with the 75th Rangers. Even those who fail to meet the criteria of the two aforementioned institutions are still generally infantry trained, meaning that they have a higher level of expectation/knowledge than your average sailor attempting BUDs. So with a significantly higher level of basic canditates applying for Army SF, you can begin to see where the problems of comparison begin to creep in. And yet, attrition rates for Army SF selection still stand only marginally lower than that of Buds/SEALs.

As for Delta, well, same thing again. They select from existing SF (Green Berets) and Rangers Beginning to see the picture? It is pointless for anyone to attempt a comparison between the effectiveness of the various SOF units when the necessary criteria is based upon attrition numbers. In fact, given the digression in roles and tasks among the many special units floating about, any comparison attempted between them is akin to deciding whether a refrigerator or a car jack is more effective/elite Reply

Morten / 10 Jan, 2010 at 10:45 pm I think it's wrong to put out a list of the best special forces in the world, especially writing "badass" in the title. Those you mentioned do definitely have the most combat experience, but I'm not quite so sure they're the most badass Let's take the norwegian special forces for example, they're the only unit in Afghanistan whom havent been airlifted because of hypothermia and/or altitude-sickness. They have close ties to Rangers, DEVGRU (better known as Seal Team Six) and the British SAS, and they are also viewed upon some of the best in winter warfare, or warfare under extreme conditions. I think you should've included the Norwegian special forces on the list, but you're also mising out on Gurkhas and KSK, all of whom are much better than MARSOC (they aren't even viewed upon as an special force, they're just a bunch of steroid-pumped maniacs), same goes for Green Berets, or Special Forces Group 1 to 13, though they are a little more cunning than the MARSOC-guys. MI6? Seriously? They're spies, the same as CIA, they're not a special force. Rangers, although great soldiers, aren't Special Forces (atleast not in my opinion), they're just a well trained light infantry division. Spetsnaz isnt what you think it is, it's the russian word for special forces, and may mean alot of things. I guess you're meaning the army Spetsnaz, which is called GRU. But there

are some mean mother*****ers from FSB aswell whom are called Spetsnaz, though noone really knows anything about them. And the fact that you let out CIA's Special Activity Division and Intelligence Support Activity just goes to show how little research you actually have done. My list would be something like this: 1. CIA Special Activities Division (USA) 2. Shayetet 13 (Israel) 3. Spetsnaz GRU (Russia) 4. Forsvarets Spesialkommando (Norway) 5. SAS (UK) 6. 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (USA) 7. Marinejegerkommandoen (Norway) 8. Intelligence Support Activity (USA) 9. Gurkhas (Nepal) 10. Kommando Spezialkrfte (Germany) And to all of you who ask why Mossad aren't on the list, it's because they're spies. They're like CIA, but they're allowed to kill, and seemingly enjoy to do so. I would show you why MARSOC is and will always be the tip of the spear. Steroid maniacs, wow!!! You are a genius I can tell. It is funny though I work at place now that intelligence is needed and Marines are steroid maniacs and not as cunning as SF soldiers. You can never have the slightest idea about the personal sacrifices, living conditions, stress, and life threatening situations, these men have to endure. Time and time again. Not for nothing, do the rest of world look to them for advice, and training ideas. They may be the toughest of the tough, but they are still Human beings. You'll more often than not find the things you mention, have an outside the barracks influence. Family problems being a major one.None of this is denied by the soldiers themselves. brian / 6 Jun, 2010 at 03:14 am Very true Kibey. I was disabled from the USMC (2nd Force Recon Co.) for the most part nobody new our existence if not in the service. I know most are with MARSOC now but we were a spitting image of the SEALs, mission wise. We never did get many jobs because Naval commanders wanted their own. SEALs get more credit than deserved. If our job or mission was to go and do a direct action (DA) mission and shoot up thousands of rounds at the enemy and then peel away maybe we would have been more known. Now I know they do more than just DA missions, but our missions and training were damn near identical other than reconnaissance and a few other things. Other services did not appreciate us not joining SOCOM and they gave us crap missions. The Corp's didn't need SOCOM, we were great w/out them. We had the MAGTF. MARSOC will do great in there new surroundings. I also can't believe the Rangers are that well thought of. Don't get me wrong they do a great job at what they do, but what I have seen of them (and I did do things w/them) they are a great small unit infantry or grunt. The Army in general are not really that well trained, that's my opinion and what I have seen. SF are great advisers, knowledgeable, very intelligent, but in my lack a little fighting skills. They are threatened now by MARSOC because of our MSOAG and MIB. I love all my spec op brothers from all services and they are the greatest!!!! Reply

Id've thought, maybe that the British Commandos or Marines mightve snuck in given the former was the basis for both the SAS and other Special Forces while the latter was

the inspiration for the British Commandos and the US Marines having been a regiment well before the War of Independence, the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars. A second BTW Australia and New Zealand also have SAS Regiments and they receive exactly the same training as their British sister Regiment: so much so that the individual SAS Regiments dont even distinguish themselves as British, Australian or New Zealander they are SAS; or simply The Regiment. This was explained to me by one of the six Aussie Vietnam Veterans who were ex SAS that called the Vietnam Veterans Clubhouse in Hastings, Victoria, Australia, their home (there was also a Kiwi ex-SAS member as well, making 7 in all) - - - and, yes, David; they DO have their problems; as do ALL ex-servicemen; Special Forces or no: God Bless them ALL! brian / 6 Jun, 2010 at 03:42 am Hey dumb ass, the same thing could be me trying to find you in your backyard w/out millions of acres of mountains. If you have not been there looking, shut the fk up! Your blokes are not doing well either are they? Reply

dearg / 11 Sep, 2010 at 08:27 am Who are his blokes genius? It's a US fake war costing endless billions.

Arsnl / 11 Jan, 2010 at 05:16 am @Armodillotron (43): i also think propaganda plays a role here. Why the hell did osama escape when the had him cornered in 2002, if americans had so many great units?? Ps a notable mention for the french foreign legion, i was hoping. Reply

Arsnl / 11 Jan, 2010 at 05:26 am @Shagrat (32): When you say God bless them all, to what god are you refering. The Thou shalt not kill god, the turn the other cheek god or ares? Im a bit confused. Why are people so freakin proud of their armies? Im not being an utopist here. Armies do have their role but lets consider them a necessary evil not something to be that proud of except when the other side is truly evil like nazi germany. But there have been so many massacres too and blunders with so many people killed. @El the erf (43): stop repeating what i say you freak. Reply

JTF2? Reply

fpmaldini03 / 14 Dec, 2010 at 07:13 pm You can't include the JTF2 on the list because almost no one knows anything about them. The best special fcorces are the ones that you know nothing about. Reply

Camo / 11 Jan, 2010 at 05:48 am Interesting list as per usual Flamehorse but sorry, far too US-centric for my liking. To allocate 5 of the 10 positions to the various US Forces is a bit rich. Surely you could have found room for the elite talents of the Australian SAS, as well as Mossad? Reply

oouchan / 11 Jan, 2010 at 05:48 am Interesting list. Learned a bit. Nice work, flamehorse. Not really my type of list though, so nothing more from me. Reply

Morten / 11 Jan, 2010 at 05:48 am Actually, I forgot DEVGRU. Put them at place number six and push out KSK from Germany. Reply

whodareswins / 11 Sep, 2010 at 01:02 pm DEVGRU is part of navy seals. they're commonly called seal team 6, so technically they're part of this list Reply

Nicky / 11 Jan, 2010 at 05:54 am the Navy Seals physical training is beyond belief?! are you having a laugh thats what the British army expects its mere officers to do in selection, and they point out (and are correct that that is a BASIC level of fitnessyou shouldnt have to work too hard to do any of those. (speaking as an army officer)

USMC Devil Dogs / 11 Jan, 2010 at 05:57 am Wow I Feel Hurt That Marines Are Number 8 On This List You Obviously Dont Kno Your Special Forces Too Well Reply

skullfuck / 19 Oct, 2010 at 11:05 pm think about it the fact that you're hurt by that makes the marines deserving of its #8 ranking. Right?

Reply

skullfuck / 19 Oct, 2010 at 11:24 pm oh yeah I forgot, the few the brave the proud.. too much pride makes your ego weak. Just so you know.. Reply

Joel / 20 Dec, 2010 at 06:51 pm Marines aren't special forces, so they shouldn't even be on the list. Reply

Arsnl / 11 Jan, 2010 at 06:02 am @c man (49): He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance, how

violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action! It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder Albert Einstein. GOD bless them. May GOD save our countries and our culture. GOD is on OUR side. @El the erf (50): well stop repeating me. Its so annoying. Maybe you tap in my brain. Its like a milkshake and you have a straw (cant rememer the quote exactly) ps to all the army men and women that will certainly disagree with me: well im sorry. Atleast in my ideas and on the net i want to be an utopist. Reply 1 2 3 17 Next Amazon B&N Plus: Purchase The New Book! The Ultimate Book of Bizarre Lists Subscribe 21696 Facebook 9397 Twitter 0 RSS
