PROCEDURE FOR SHAFT ALIGNMENT 34000DWT BULK CARRIERS

1.0 Vessel Preparation 1.1 The vessel is afloat with about 67% propeller immersion. 1.2 The main equipments and machineries are installed on board. 1.3 Intermediate shaft bearing foundation is installed. Intermediate shaft bearings chock (liner) is fabricated and welded on the foundation. The surface of chock is prepared with 1/100 slope towards outside and contact area is not less than 70 % the total area when checked with a surface plate. 1.4 All machined surfaces of shafts conform to the dimensions/finish stipulated in the drawings and are clean. 1.5 All required tools and measuring instruments are available. 1.6 Propeller shaft and intermediate shaft are positioned with enough gaps for adjustments. 1.7 Propeller shaft is arrested in the required position. 1.8 Temporary Support (adjustable) is installed 400 mm aft of Intermediate Shaft forward flange as shown in Fig.6.1.Thus Intermediate shaft will be resting on its bearing and the temporary support. 1.9 Intermediate Shaft/Bearing are provided with adjusting jack bolts. 1.10 All work in the vicinity is stopped during the alignment process.

2.0 Pre-Requisites: 2.1 Shaft system and Main Engine are arranged according to Drawing No. 42501(Carl Bro). 2.2 Shaft line Whirling analyses and alignment calculations by Makers are available. 2.3 Main Engine installation and Crankshaft deflections are checked and confirmed to be as per Makers requirements. 3.0 Shaft Alignment Procedure: 3.1. Adjust the height of the intermediate shaft bearing so that GAP and SAG between the aft flange of intermediate shaft and flange of propeller shaft flange are as under: (Flange of intermediate shaft to be placed lower than flange of propeller shaft. Please see Fig. 6.2) SAG = 1.64 0.025 mm, GAP = 0.59 0.04 mm. (Data as per Makers calculations shown in Figure 6.1 and tolerances shown in Appendix-G.) 3.2 Without disturbing Intermediate Shaft, adjust the position of the Main Engine so that GAP and SAG between the Main Engine output end flange and the forward flange of intermediate shaft are as under: (The intermediate shaft to be placed lower than crankshaft of main engine. Please see Fig 6.2). SAG = 0.27 0.025 mm GAP = 0.35 0.04 mm.

( Data as per Makers calculations shown in Figure 6.1 and tolerances shown in Appendix G.) Note: The GAP and SAG values of shafting system and crankshaft deflection to be checked a number of times in two or three days. (The values may vary from time to time depending upon the ambient temperature). If the Gap and Sag values of shafting system and the crankshaft deflections are stable and in the allowable range, the shaft alignment is considered to meet the requirement. The data is then presented to Class and Owners and checked and confirmed in their presence. 4.0 Coupling of Flanges: 4.1 Connect flanges of intermediate shaft and propeller shaft by 12 Nos. reamer bolts of 64 finished to H7/p6 (Please see Wartsila Drawing No. PAA1014939 page 13/16),in the presence of Class and Owners. The bolts are frozen in liquid Nitrogen before fitting. Before inserting into the flange bolt holes, the bolts are to be sprayed with Molykote. Avoid the Molykote being sprayed on the shaft flanges as this may result in the bolts turning during fitting. 4.2 Connect Main Engine Crank Shaft and Intermediate Shaft. 4.2.1 Connect aft flange of Main Engine crankshaft to forward flange of intermediate shaft by 4 temporary bolts with clearance of about 0.03mm.) 4.2.2 In this position, bore and ream the remaining 8 bolt holes of Drawing No. 425-01. 4.2.3 Fabricate/machine 4 reamer bolts to suit the finished bore diameters in order to provide the required fit. Check and confirm the bolt hole and bolt dimensions in the presence of Class and Owners.

4.2.4 Install the bolts (eight in numbers) in to the corresponding holes, in the presence of Class and Owners. Before inserting, the bolts are to be sprayed with Molykote. Avoid the Molykote being sprayed on the shaft flange to prevent bolts from being rotated during fitting. 4.2.5 Remove the four temporary bolts. Bore and ream these four holes and fabricate/machine and install bolts following the same procedure as for the eight bolts already fitted. Note: When coupling, Main Engine No.1 Piston to be in TDC.
