INTRODUCTION SENSE PROPERTIES AND STEREOTYPES I. Background Sense is meaning of a word; way of understanding something (Oxford, p. 390, 2005).

The sense of an expression is indispensable to catch the meaning of an utterance. The sense of an expression can be tought of as the sum of its sense properties and sense relations with other expression. In this chapter there are three important points of sense properties of sentences to be discussed. The following are; the properties of being analyitc, of being synthetic, and of being contradictory. While the stereotype is fixed idea of what somebody or something is like (Oxford, p. 424, 2005). II. Content A. Sense properties 1. Analytic An analytic sentence is the sentence is always true because of the senses of the words in the sentence depanding on the situation. Analytic sentences can be formed from contradictions and vice versa by the insertion or removal of the negative particle word not. The analytic sentence is also not informative to anyone who already know the meaning of the that words. Some examples of analytic sentence as follow; Cats are animals, The boy is his own fathers son, Bachelors are unamarried, etc. Cats are animals: the sense of cat includes in the sense of animal ( 1. That sentence are analytic which has a relation between the word cat and animal)

(2.

The relation can be expressed as follows the sense of cat includes the sense of animal), etc.

There is an interdependence between sense relations and sense properties. Sense properties of sentences e.g. analyticity depend of the sense properties of and the sense relations between the words they contain.

2. Synthetic A synthetic is the truth depands on fact on the certain situation. It may be true or false and diverge neither analytic nor contradiction because a synthetic are informative in realword situation. Look at some example of synthetic Cats never live more than 20 years, No cat likes to bathe, He likes cat, etc. Cat never live more than 20 years; the truth depand on the situation.

3.

Contradiction A contradiction is always false because of the sense of the words in the sentence. Thus a contradiction is opposite of an analytic sentence. Here are some example of contradiction; A cat is a vegetable, The girl is her own mothers mother, Both of Johns parents are married to aunts of mine, etc. A cat is a vegetable; the meaning of cat does not include in the sense of vegetable.

B. Stereotype Stereotype is an individual example of something which is typical of that thing. Stereotypes are oversimplifications of things or people. Stereotypes is also related to the prototype but is not the same thing. A prototype is an object which is held to be very typical of the kind of object which can be referred to by an expression containing the predicate. Protoype can be known clearly because the things is specified while stereotype is abstract specification.
