DESCRIPTION OF THE LEARNERS: The learners are graduating students of the University of Saint Louis in their last semester and have a good standing in the College of Health and Allied Sciences. They are all Registered Nurses working in the academe and different hospitals with in the province. Majority of the students are single aging from 22-25 years of age with a few of them of older age. Most of them come from the middle class families. The students have strong personalities and determination to finish their course for they have the ambition to have a permanent job here or abroad The students come from within the province of Cagayan and the nearby provinces of the region in which they have different dialect but still there is camaraderie in them. Majority of the students have their own personal interest and motivation in taking up the course in order to gain higher level of nursing education for personal and professional growth and development. The students believe that success is greatly affected by their own performance, effort and established habits of studying and learning. FOCUS OF THE PRACTICUM: This practicum is focused on enhancing the acceptable/proper attitude, skills and knowledge of students in their chosen field of specialization- Adult Nursing based services with emphasis on the promotion and maintenance of health as well as the prevention of illness utilizing the nursing process in the holistic care of the client. It includes the terminal competencies needed in the care of a healthy/well and at-risk/with problem individual client. TIME FRAME: The MSN students will be exposed for twenty five (25) days in the hospital with an exposure of eight (8) hours a day equivalent to 200 hours of practicum experience to be completed within one (1) month.

The National Kidney and Transplant Institute is a tertiary medical specialty center with a significant history relevant to the medical profession in the Philippines. It is the center for referral of kidney patients from various regional hospitals in the nation and is recognized as the lead agency in voluntary blood services. In its 22-year existence and operations, the Institutes medical achievements and milestones are comparable to any specialty hospital in the world. Formerly known as the National Kidney Foundation of the Philippines (NKFP) , the Institute has a three-fold mission : Service, Training and Research primarily for the benefit of the Filipino people afflicted with kidney and allied diseases and to secure the well-being of the people by providing them with the specialized health and medical services. LOCATION AND STRUCTURE OF AFFILIATION National Kidney and Transplant Institute sits in the center of a 58,899 square-meter lot, along East Avenue in Quezon City, bordered by greenery screening the main building structures from the surrounding bustling avenues. This gives the patients and visitors the ease of commute and travel and also ensuring tranquility amidst the bustle of the city. This area is very accessible to all types of land transportation. ( Maps and Directions ) The Institute itself is 2-storey structure with three buildings (Main, Annex and Dialysis Center) connected to each other. The Main Building houses most of the Cost Centers and where the Administrative offices can be found. The Annex Building encloses the recently opened Marcos Wing and the Radiology Dept (MRI and CT Scan centers), Center for Special Services and also the ER Dept. In the Dialysis Center, you can find the Out-Patient Dept., Hemodialysis and CAPD centers, HOPE office, Medical Records office and the clinics (third floor) of all our Medical Specialists. TARGET COMPETENCIES: This Practicum Course aims to make available the MSN students the chance to expose in a qualified training hospital which will provide adequate learning experience handle cases found in the Hospital Set-up, augment the level of awareness of the Clients, and provide necessary interventions to the clients to help them attain optimum level of wellness. At the end of the rotation: 1. The students will have improved nursing competencies in health promotion, disease/illness prevention, identification of risk factors, and clients at risk, and the management of potential/actual health problems, 2. The students experience of utilizing the nursing process and formulating nursing care plans will be reinforced. 3. The student shall have acquired the holistic understanding of the human person as a bio-psychocultural being focusing on the concept of health and illness as it is related to the care of the client 4. The student shall be able to demonstrate the core competencies in the eleven (11) key areas of responsibility.

COMPETENCIES DEVELOPED AND REINFORCED: 1. Work and professional ethics, skills in communication, leadership, interpersonal relations, and behavior and attitude becoming a conscientious, efficient and compassionate nurse. 2. Tools of critical thinking and prioritization of needs i.e. Airway, Breathing, Circulation (ABC), Maslows Hierarchy of needs, etc., and knowledge on laboratory procedures and normal values 5. Theories in formulating nursing diagnoses based on the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) list 6. Tools of Nursing Care Plan, Clinical Pathway or Care Path and SMART Plan, Categorizing Independent and Dependent Nursing Actions 7. Values in leadership, teamwork, coordination and cooperation and protocols in delegation of responsibilities and values of accountability 8. Community organizing and health education strategies 9. Steps/Protocols in carrying out doctors orders, Preparing and Administering Oral and Parenteral Medications and Intravenous Fluids, Requesting and Preparing Patients for Laboratory Procedures, Invasive and Non-invasive procedures and treatment 10. Nursing Care Planning implementation and recording, legal issues in documentation, vital signs monitoring, intake and output taking 11. Tools in evaluating patients response, vital signs and intake and output monitoring, laboratory procedures, health assessment, comparison of expected outcomes to actual outcome, maintaining nursing process viability 12.
