PAPERPRESENTATION ON ADIABATIC ENGINE

ABSTRACT: An adiabatic internal combustion engine capable of increasing a thermal efficiency remarkably as compared with conventional internal combustion engines capable of easily realizing a spark ignition adiabatic engine represented by gasoline engines and rotary diesel engines, and also capable of realizing an adiabatic engine relatively low in cost and reliable in durability where in a cooling loss is lowered or eliminated by insulating the combustion chamber of a reciprocating or a rotary engine so as to reduce fuel consumption accordingly and increase fuel economy more than conventional engines, heat resisting material is installed on the surface of the combustion chamber and insulating material is installed between the heat resisting material and engine base material (aluminium alloy or iron) so as to enable a low cost and durable insulation where the temperature of a combustion chamber valve is not increased to a high temperature. Components, their connection, improving efficiency of engine compared with normal engine etc are explained here. INTRODUCTION:

ENGINE: A machine that converts one form of energy into another form of energy. HEAT ENGINE: An engine which transforms chemical energy of a fuel into thermal energy to perform useful work NORMAL DIESEL ENGINE

CLASSIFICATION OF ENGINES: Engines are basically classified into two types 1. IC ENGINE 2. EC ENGINE These are further classified into two types 1. Reciprocating engine 2. Rotary engine NEED FOR A NEW ENGINE: To improve the efficiency, to reuse the exhaust gases and to overcome other disadvantages of a normal engine a new engine called ADIABATIC ENGINE is introduced to improve such qualities with low cost and having the features of durability and reliability. ADIABATIC ENGINE: It can be defined as the heat engine or thermodynamic system which transfers thermal energy into useful work without gain or loss of the heat.

HISTORY: HENRY SMOKEY YUNICK who was an American mechanic and designer for cars associated with motorsports. He was born on 25-5-1923. He left his schooling at the age of 16 years, stayed in a separate city from his parents, got married and he started working as a mechanic and did many amazing things like 1. Nitrous oxide injection 2. Extended tip spark plugs 3. Reversible cooling system 4. Variable ratio power steering All his attempts were successful but not known to the world.

INITIATION:

In march 1983, popular science carried out a news on a engine invented by yunick which he called as the ADIABATIC ENGINE.

FEATURES: *Air fuel ratio is 22:1 to 27:1 *Peak combustion temperature was about 5000 deg F *Exhaust gas temperature was about 2200deg F *Applicable to any otto cycle engine COMPONENTS: 1. Two cylinders 2. Auxiliary cylinder 3. Suction and Exhaust valves 4. Spark plug 5. Basic carburetter 6 .Turbo like device TYPE OF WORKING: The working of two cylinders with auxiliary cylinder where the exhaust valves of cylinders are connected to the suction valve of auxiliary cylinder. The ceramic coatings inside the combustion chamber which help in maintaining the high temperatures inside the chamber are discussed. Basic carburetter, turbo like device and complete vaporization of fuel are stated here.

BASIC LOGIC INVOLVED: 1. Porous metal plate coated with Li2 ZrO3 was used to make CO2 separate from the exhaust gas of the engine. 2. CH4 and CO2 are supplied to the catalytic converter and reformed CO and H2 gas 3. Gas and Steam turbine is installed to recover the exhaust gas energy. 4. As a result, thermal efficiency of the engine systems will be improved to about 57.5% STRUCTURE OF VESSEL FOR REFORMING CH4:

COMPARISION BETWEEN ADIABATIC AND NORMAL ENGINE: NORMAL ENGINE: Efficiency is low Fuel consumption is high Ceramics are not used Exhaust gases cannot be reused ADIABATIC ENGINE: Efficiency is high Fuel consumption is low Ceramics are used on adiabatic members in combustion chamber

Exhaust gases can be reused CONSIDERATIONS TO BE NOTED: 1. Sectional area of auxiliary cylinder is larger than the sectional area of normal cylinders 2. Pistons of normal cylinders should be at T.D.C and the cylinder should be at B.D.C piston of auxiliary

3. Exhaust valves of the normal cylinders should be connected to suction valve of auxiliary cylinder through a common shaft ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES: Advantages: 1. Thermal efficiency can be improved and fuel consumption can be lowered 2. Low in cost and reliable in durability 3. Combustion gases are sent after sometime there by decreasing the air pollution Disadvantages: 1. Ceramic coatings may be damaged after sometime 2. Internal construction little difficult Conclusion: Engines which are the most useful components in every automobile needed to be developed with improving efficiencies and less fuel consumption Production rate of this kind of engines should be increased for better running of automobiles and for having pollution free environment.
