Sydneys Story
When Sydney was born, she was perfect healthy and beautiful. Sydney was everything you could ever want in a child and more. Shortly after her second birthday and a month of cold-like symptoms followed by some pain in her legs, we discovered a grapefruit-sized tumor in her little tummy. Our familys world came crashing down. Sydney was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma, a deadly cancer with no known cause or cure. In the days to come, we would learn that Sydney had between a 15% and 25% chance at survival. From that moment on, our lives would become a roller coaster of feelings and emotion. We began our journey at Cook Childrens. There we felt safe because we knew we were surrounded by some of the best doctors and nurses in the business. That wasnt what made the difference though. No, it was their drive and willingness to find the cure for our daughter, no matter where the answer lied, that truly set them apart. Over the next four years of our journey, Sydney would endure over nine rounds of high-dose chemotherapy, multiple surgeries, a stem cell transplant, 12 rounds of radiation and an unending barrage of painful immunotherapy and maintenance chemotherapy. We would travel back and forth across the country to receive treatment, and along the way we would meet hundreds of others who were on our same path. Unfortunately, Sydney would lose many friends to cancer, but somehow, against all odds she continued to survive. Following the guidance of our doctors at Cook Childrens we participated in many cutting edge clinical trials. In fact, years later, it would be discovered that one of those clinical trials that Sydney participated in at Cook Childrens led to an increase in survival of over 20%, almost doubling the current survival rate and today, that may be the very reason she is still with us. This year Sydney started the fourth grade. She has been blessed. Although diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma at the age of 2 and given a 25% chance of survival, 8 years later she is beautiful and whole and continues to be everything we ever wanted her to be. While her future does not hold any guarantees, she is here with us. We can hold her, love her, and share with her as she experiences life. That is all thanks to Cook Childrens, both for their dedication to bringing the most cutting edge science to our children and to having the most dedicated and caring doctors and staff imaginable. It is because of Cook Childrens that our baby was grown up into a beautiful little girl. Cutting edge clinical trials certainly made the difference in Sydneys life. She would not be here today without them. Your support will help bring more clinical trials to Cook Childrens. Children fighting neuroblastoma wont have to travel far from home to receive their treatments and families will be able to stay together. Most importantly, with the incredible work done here at Cook Childrens, your support will help to ensure more children like Sydney live.
