Graz and design a young, passionate love affair

Getting to know a city with all its facets is an exciting, sometimes baffling, but always edifying experience. When it comes to Graz, one of these facets is design. And theres a good reason for this after all, the city has been a UNESCO City of Design since March 2011. You have to have something to offer to be eligible for this distinction. Youll find a bit of what Graz has to offer on the following pages. A selection of shops, bars, restaurants and other hotspots, all associated in some way with design.

Theres a simple reason for this association. Most of these shops, bars, restaurants and hotspots are recommended by people from Grazs creative scene. The result is a fascinating panorama of the creative landscape in Graz. Strictly subjective, but authentic. A snapshot that doesnt claim to be exhaustive. In a word: a piece of living design culture in a city that has developed tremendous beacon effect and now rightly ranks as a budding hub of the international creative industry.

How this guide works: This guide is made up of two major parts: in the first part we present the must-sees connected with design when you come to visit Graz. The journey starts out in the city centre, taking you to squares large and small, down roads wide and steep, to islands in the river, and alien architecture in vibrant creative areas. And, of course, we havent forgotten the outskirts selected locations outside the centre also feature in the guide.
5

In the second part we answer a number of questions you may have. Why does Graz have such extraordinary architecture? Where do all these young, well-trained creative people come from? And what exactly does City of Design mean? So theres plenty to read about. In easily digestible morsels of information; peculiarities of the city presented in pithy comments; jigsaw pieces that by degrees join together to form your individual picture of the city. By the way, youre in good company as you travel. Eighteen personalities from Grazs creative scene are your fellow-travellers, including designers from various disciplines, a concert pianist, a professor of design or a board member from a major design-led shoe company based in Graz. And because the insiders perspective can sometimes blur the picture, we have also invited people from outside the city, people with links to Graz, but who live elsewhere. A page reference for all of these recommendations can be found after each interview. And everything is listed again in an extensive index at the end of the guide for quick reference, so to speak.

Speaking of reference, there is a convenient Google Map of all of the shops, bars, restaurants and museums and other hot spots featured in this guide. Just follow this link http://tinyurl.com/6mhxk7c or scan the following QR code on your mobile phone:

The Mall

From Jakominiplatz to Hauptplatz

Its obvious to anyone from Graz that the best place to start exploring the city is Jakominiplatz. And probably to any guest coming to the city centre from wherever. The reason being that this square is a kind of beating heart ceaselessly pumping people, trams and buses around the city. In a word, this is where everything moving in and around Graz converges. Towards the north, Herrengasse links Jakominiplatz to Hauptplatz. For years it has been a pedestrian zone perfect for a casual stroll. The trams are characteristic too: the six big tram lines all run along Herrengasse. So youre never far away from the Bim, as it is known colloquially, in the city centre. The whole panoply of Graz as a City of Design awaits you on either side of Herrengasse: shops, bars and a historic centre that was declared a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site for good reason.

Georg Dinstl
designer

Design is more than just a tool for getting objects into shape. It has a lot to do with flair and feeling. Design is an attitude to life. What place is your secret love? Sackstrasse. What is the first thing you show a visitor in Graz? Strike out with your eyes wide open. The city has something for everyone ... all a person needs to do is find it! Go for a stroll through all the great little narrow alleyways and pass by all the finely decorated facades of the city. a gift from Graz for a friend. What will it be? Art. Best of all something from the gallery Das Voyeur.
11

Where can design be seen at its clearest in Graz? Among all the young people with their tiny start-up businesses who seem to be saying hello, here we are and put everything they have got in the display window. Your hotel tip? The Wiesler. Where do you go in the evenings? The Lila Eule or the Eschenlaube Your shopping tip? SunsetStar and zerum Lifestyle. Georg Dinstl is a creative pirate and a part of the Design Collective permanent unit. The special treasure in his chest: street art and graffiti.

Running off the square to the north is Sackstrasse, probably the oldest shopping street in Graz and for many the most beautiful. On the left, the street is dominated by the Kastner & hler building which was voted best department store in Las Vegas in 2011. The Spanish architects Nieto / Sobejano gave this exquisite traditional store a modern make-over in 2010 including a breath-taking rooftop terrace. A bit further north, the view of the Schlossberg hill opens up on the right, where we also find the Schlossberg lift and the Schlossberg tunnels, with the unique Dom im Berg location. To the left its off towards the river Mur, an architectural highlight sitting right in the middle: the Mur Island, built to plans of the New York artist and designer Vito Acconci during the citys stint as Cultural Capital of Europe in 2003.

Heinzpeter Mandl
board member of Leder & Schuh

Design is putting functionality into shape with an emotional appeal. What is the first thing you show a visitor in Graz? The connection between the old and the new: starting at the Kunsthaus, we walk across Erzherzog-Johann-Brcke bridge, where you have a great view of the Schlossberg. What three places are a must to be seen? The city centre, Mumuth and the Helmut-List-Halle. a gift from Graz for a friend. What will it be? A book about Graz showing the modern architecture and the old city quarter. Your shopping tip? The boutiques and shops in Sackstrasse or Stempfer49

gasse for example gisi-k. and Dominici or BreinederGibiser. Leder & Schuh have their own outstanding expertise in accessories, but Breineder-Gibiser have an immense tradition in this area. It always pays to have a look in. Where can design be seen at its clearest in Graz? In the architecture of this city. Since the European Capital of Culture year 2003 modern architecture has been allowed in next to the old city centre. What is typical of Graz? There are a lot of products with a design aspect that are suitable for a global market. You can sense the incredible power and seriousness with which the work has been done. The best place to spend the night? Either the Schlossberghotel or the Wiesler. Wining and dining: your tips? The Hofkeller, for example. Hchwirt in Andritz has the best fried chicken.

A winding maze of narrow streets spans the area between Hauptplatz and Neutorgasse. Graz is often said to have a Mediterranean ambience and you can see why when you come here: small bars, shops, and outdoor dining areas lend the Franciscan district a vibrant and yet romantic touch. Incidentally, the Franciscan Church also houses the oldest bell in Graz which was cast in 1272. Atmospheric and well worth seeing is the Gothic cloister and Baroque Antonius Chapel.

Between Sporgasse, Schlossberg and Stadtpark

The Schlossberg is a constant companion on your way around Graz. Rising high above the roofscape, it is an intrinsic part of the citys identity, a landmark par excellence. At the foot of the Schlossberg lies one of the most important roads in Graz. It is by no means a major artery, but rather a street through which no traffic flows. People even have to push their bicycles up the cobbled, narrow and steep Sporgasse. And the street is very old, being something like the heart of the old town; you can feel its centuryold history. The Sporgasse is a street for walking, stopping, looking around, taking photos and shopping. A little further up, you can reach the nearby Stadtpark by turning right into Hofgasse.

Market Value
Between Kaiser-Josef-Platz, Stadtpark and St. Leonhard

History books state: A Protestant house of prayer was erected at Kaiser-JosefPlatz in 1824 under the Tolerance Act of the Emperor Joseph, after whom the square was named the former house of prayer is now known as the Heilandskirche. When people ask about the special features of this square today, the answer tends to be a different one: the market without a doubt! Here at the biggest of the 15 farmers markets in Graz, you will find all the good things of the region: wine, runner beans, apples and any amount of pumpkin seed oil of course. Offshoots of the Graz Stadtpark extend to the north-east of the Graz Opera House. The Forum Stadtpark, an arts institution established in the 1960s, is also located in this largest green area of the city. Incidentally: the many busts that line the paths through this city park are a record of a large portion of Styrian cultural history. These prominent companions on a stroll include the composer Robert Stolz, the author Peter Rosegger or the astronomer Johannes Kepler.

at assembly. I always find something at tag.werk. And: a fine fitted shirt from Monika Sommer on the Grieskai. Is there some place youd like to design? Oh, there are such a lot ... What would really appeal to me would be the Wilder Mann* in the Jakoministrasse. What three places are a must to be seen? Apart from the Kunsthaus you really must visit all the many galleries in Graz, such as < rotor >, the Atelier Jungwirth or Zimmermann Kratochwill. Wheres the best place to enjoy a quick cup of coffee / beer? For my taste, the charmingly old-world caf at Hotel Weitzer is the only typical old Austrian coffee-house left in Graz. Eating and drinking in Graz? Greiner in the Grabenstrasse, but also the small but very fine Mller in the Villefortgasse.

Design is ideas brought into shape. Graz in three words? A small city with all the flair of a great big city. Wheres the best place to relax in Graz? In the guest garden of the Fotter coffee-house in Attemsgasse. a gift from Graz for a friend. What will it be? Pumpkinseed oil and Makava. What can you never resist when shopping? Items from Gebhart Blazek, Laden 21, or from kwirl or in the Wunderkammer. Your fashion shopping tip? I have most fun when I shop

Thered Track
Round and about Jakominiplatz

A bright red running track in the middle of the city is symbolic for a district that is thrusting ahead. Enormous publicity greeted this public space intervention in 2010 - and not only in Graz. The running track idea was immediately hot news in numerous design and architecture blogs worldwide. The Jakomini district and above all the urban triangle that is marked out so strikingly by this track is the focus of an ambitious City of Graz project: the entire area is to be converted piece-by-piece into an irresistibly attractive address for the thriving creative industry based in Graz. The idea is pulsing with life: some 30 new creative industry companies have already moved in. Ready, steady, GO! is the name that has been given to the 750-metre-long red running track around Jakoministrasse, Grazbachgasse and Klosterwiesgasse. It also serves as a programme for the entire district: a starting signal for design and creativity!

and the arts scene of course and thus between Griesplatz and Lendplatz in Graz. a gift from Graz for a friend. What will it be? A Styrian wine, a bottle of pumpkin seed oil or one of those snow globes with the Clock Tower in it. Simply the classics. Your fashion shopping tip? Taiga or Pell Mell. Is there some place youd like to design? Something hidden away up on the Schlossberg perhaps, where you have to go through all the old tunnels and come out somewhere fully unexpected. And then the Louis Armstrong song We Have All The Time In The World is playing in some shady caf garden or other ... Wheres the best place to enjoy a quick cup of coffee? In Caf Ritter. Eating and drinking in Graz? Ginko in Grazbachgasse.

Design is the attempt to find a coherent and creative solution for a real task. Graz in three words? First sit down. What place is your secret love? The Augarten and the path out of town along the River Mur. What is typical of Graz? Graz is pleasantly unpretentious. Graz is not a slave to its history, it does not have a reputation to lose and it provides a certain amount of free space for the unconventional. These are things I liked about Graz even as a child. Where can design be seen at its clearest in Graz? Probably where it is being taught: at the FH Joanneum. And also in popular culture

Interview

Marion Wicher
architect Design is an expression of zest for life. Graz in three words? Unique, refreshing, self-improvising. What is the first thing you show a visitor in Graz? When the weather is good: Graz from a birds-eye view from the Starcke Haus on the Schlossberg. Wheres the best place to relax in Graz? In the Burggarten, in the Mariahilferkirche gardens or in the Franziskanerkirche cloisters. What can you never resist when shopping? Marlies Dekkers lingerie, only from Erika Medwed in Reitschulgasse. Your fashion shopping tip? tag.werk and Palo Alto.
135

What three places are a must to be seen? The Museum of Awareness, the Sculpture Park and the Lendplatz. What is typical of Graz? Sundays and bad weather are only a good combination if you love melancholy moods. Graz could then become your absolute hotspot. Wheres the best place to enjoy a quick cup of coffee / beer? The Franziskanerkeller for the beer and the Caf Kaiserfeld for the coffee. Eating and drinking in Graz? Afternoons: Macello on Lendplatz, Dainadoo on Entenplatz. Special tip: the Klein Klein menu at Luttenberger, but please note: it is by appointment only! A snack: Brtchenparadies in Kaiserfeldgasse. Out and about with friends where would you go? Postgarage or Reinerhof.

Power House
Between Griesplatz and Lendplatz

There is scarcely any other quarter where the creative energy of the city is so immediately apparent as at Lendplatz. Innovative design studios, unconventional shops, the coolest hairstylists and a host of bars and cafs have moved in over the past few years. They even have their own festival here the Lendwirbel. In 2012, the designmonth festival, a collaboration with the Citypark mall, took place in the area around Griesplatz. There is a good reason why this area has acquired a completely new identity - the building of the Kunsthaus in 2003. The idea back then of bundling creative forces spatially has really taken off here. The Kunsthaus by Peter Cook and Colin Fournier is today not only one of the most spectacular buildings in all of Graz, it is also the central focus for art and design. The Kunsthaus and its adjacent buildings are home to the House of Architecture, the magazine Camera Austria and the designforum Steiermark.

added Value
From the centre to the outskirts of Graz

If you want to find out about all this city has to offer outside the centre, there are plenty of ways to do it: by tram, bus or bicycle, for example. Graz is a cyclists city with an excellent cycle path network. Theres no quicker and cleaner way to get around town, even out to the suburbs, where there is also much to discover. Historic buildings like Schloss Eggenberg with its superb park setting, or fine modern architecture, such as the dramatic headquarters of a Graz-based opticians. The romantic Hilmteich in Mariatrost is ideal for a walk, and for people who need a bigger scope there are many kilometres of hiking and mountain bike tracks at Plabutsch the highest point in the City with fantastic views.

Graz as UNESCO City of Design

To be a UNESCO City of Design is not only a high distinction, but also a future obligation. Whichever city has the honour to hold that title, has to fulfil a host of prerequisites. For instance, the city in question must present a well-established and thriving design scene, as well as a cultural landscape which is able to receive vital impulses from creative areas.
Moreover, it is equally important that educational facilities are provided where young people can train for a profession in the creative business. However, one of the most important things is a clear commitment to the subject of design and creative industries. And Graz has already succeeded in putting that commitment into practice, not only because the creative scene was a natural ally, but above all, because design was put on the citys political agenda. The consequences for the city of Graz are far-reaching, enabling more cultural exchange with other creative towns and cities as well as international networking. Graz thus leaves a clearly visible and important mark on the international design landscape. By the way, the other UNESCO Cities of Design are Montral, Buenos Aires, St. Etienne, Berlin, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Seoul, Kobe and Nagoya.

Creative Industries in and around Graz

It is really quite simple to explain: creative industries come into being when creativity becomes an economic factor and are politically and socially accepted as such. According to business analyses from 2006 and 2010, creative industries belong to the most rapidly growing economic sectors.
Various creative industrial enterprises in and around Graz generate 1 billion Euros gross value. Over 17,000 people throughout Styria belong to the core group of creative industries with 12,700 employees in 4,800 businesses. Creative industries thus assume a cross-sectional function in terms of strengthening innovative processes in businesses by means of design. Hence, design is understood as a holistic creative process that is not solely limited to production, but which embraces the whole tertiary sector. Creative Industries Styria is a networking organisation that has sole responsibility for fostering further development and networking activities within creative industries in Graz and Styria. As such, Creative Industries Styria transforms design policy into concrete projects and initiatives.

196

architecture in and out of Graz

Architecture in Graz is difficult to describe the scene in Graz is so multifarious! Besides the numerous projects realised by architecture studios in Graz, there are many other outstanding projects from international architects. Whatever leaps to the eye the old and new, audacious and established, traditional and avant-garde all melts into one and presents itself in impressive density and quality. Built environment, in short.
Whilst many international studios have left their mark in Graz, a lot of Graz firms have in turn become internationally successful, spreading and consolidating Grazs reputation as a city of architecture throughout the world. As a consequence, more and more architectural firms have been established in Graz. The scene has become a permanent, visible part of Graz and its selfconception. And the Faculty of Architecture at Graz University of Technology makes sure that architecture remains an important issue in Graz. Moreover, with the Graz House of Architecture, which moved into the city centre only a couple of years ago, the city has its own highly reputable institution which is wholly dedicated to the promotion of contemporary architecture.

Locations
Modern Art and Old Masters, architecture and literature, ancient treasures and the latest technologies in Graz they are only a few steps apart! Far from being something for a rainy day, the citys museums, galleries and exhibitions, such as the Sculpture Park, Botanical Garden, House of Literature and the House of Science, offer visitors an interesting and amusing time. Moreover, Graz is home to Austrias oldest museum, the Universalmuseum Joanneum.
This museum presents over 4.5 million objects at 10 locations. To it belong the Kunsthaus, Eggenberg Palace, the Neue Galerie and the Landeszeughaus. In case you are wondering who this Joanneum actually is or was the answer is: Archduke John of Austria. It was he who founded the Joanneum back in 1811, originally for educational purposes. Later, it became an Imperial Academy of Technology todays University of Technology, which also bears Johns name, just like the University of Applied Sciences and the internationally renowned research institution, Joanneum Research. The old building complex, which was redesigned and renovated just in time for the celebrations of its 200th anniversary in 2011, is now open to visitors as a Museum Quarter. In addition, the childrens museum FRida & freD offers the younger and youngest heaps of fun and entertainment.
200

Design and public space

Design plays a vital role in shaping public space. As a UNESCO City of Design, Graz has taken on that challenge. The task is easily explained: public space should be designed to make people feel comfortable and, at the same time, to serve a practical purpose. And that is exactly what design does.
Public spaces have many functions. They can be places of encounter, exchange or simply just traffic areas, like the Sonnenfelsplatz Square near Graz University. In 2011, the former roundabout was transformed into an open space which all road users, vehicles and pedestrians alike, now use as equal partners. Shared Space is the name of the concept. It is innovative, and above all, it works. That is also design. Another public space project was successfully realised when the banks of the Mur river were intelligently redesigned. Once the riverside foot and cycle paths, recreation areas and bridges had been renewed, Graz residents were happy to welcome their river back to town again. Now the river does not have to be looked down on from above people can go for a walk or a ride along the banks, or alternatively, go to a beach party. A beach party? Yes, of course! An artificial beach has been created beneath the Erzherzog Johann Bridge south of the Mur Island. It might not be a good idea to go for a swim in the strong current, but there are the odd dare-devils who in summer love to brave the waves with their surfboards.

Design in social context

Design has an essentially social component. This becomes evident when, for instance, facilities and opportunities are created for people with special educational needs, disabilities or fringe groups. Design can then adopt an important function in that it enables such people to participate in social life.
Careful construction or design makes life easier, not just for people with special needs. Sometimes these people even find their way back into a normal life by designing things and doing creative work themselves. You can buy these products in a number of shops in Graz, for example in the shop of the Odilien Institute for people with visual impairments. The labels tag.werk, herzlich! and Heidenspass offer fashionable handbags and other accessories. They are designed and made by young people in unfortunate life situations for whom regular work in one of the workshops means a first step back to independency. Offline-Retail is the name of a Caritas integration project which provides jobs for addicts. Another dedicated organisation, Pro mente Styria, supports people with mental illnesses and helps them back into an independent and free life. In their own design workshop with an adjoining store, people with impaired health, who are unable to lead a normal working life, are busy making exclusive items, ranging from bags and cases to cushions and jewellery.

204

Graz festivals
The Graz festival calendar is full of sounds, images, stories, installations, interventions and lots more. Here some examples: in recent years, design has developed a focus, for instance during the Design Month, a fourweek Graz event, which was launched back in 2009. Or at the assembly design festival, which attracts international designers who bring their fashion, art, music and performances to the metropolis on the Mur.
Talking of music. A feast for the ears, the international springfestival for electronic music attracts thousands of visitors every year and is wellknown beyond the borders of Graz. Moreover, the Elevate Festival consists of a special mix, combining contemporary music with political discourse, and including parties. When the Lendwirbel Festival (a pun on vertebra and commotion, with a focus on the latter) takes place, this freaky quarter becomes intoxicated with rhythm, dance and live acts. Another highlight of the Graz event calendar, which takes place in May, is the Diagonale Festival of Austrian Film. In summer, the Styriarte Festival of Music, with its repertoire of classical and other music genres, brings famous soloists and orchestras from all over the world to Graz. Also in summer, the La Strada International Festival of Street Art and Puppet Theatre goes on stage, shaping the cultural universe of Graz. And when the autumn arrives, the city is enlivened by the avant-garde art festival steirischer herbst which has for decades brought some of the most advanced contemporary art positions to Graz and Styria.

Study design in more ways than one!

Graz offers plenty of possibilities to train for creative professions. Four universities and two universities of applied sciences shape urban life and contribute to the citys international flair. Many of the 45,000 students living in Graz enroll at the University of Music and Performing Arts, which offers a great range of artistic studies.
Since the mid-1990s, the Joanneum University of Applied Sciences has become a focal point for design. In courses such as industrial design, information design, exhibition and museum design, media and interaction design and software design, students are trained to become experts in management. Design also plays a major role at the University of Technology. It is not only home to the Faculty of Architecture, but to modern fields of studies such as biomedical engineering. In Graz, technology and creativity thus merge to form an innovative symbiosis. But humanities are just as important for the creative sector. job-oriented course studies such as cultural management provide a solid basis for a profession in the creative industry. Situated on Campus02 at the University of Applied Sciences and Economics, Innolab network promotes inventive talent and new ideas, helping entrepreneurs to develop their ideas into products and services for the market.

208

art and Culture

Graz was already a capital of culture long before it was officially appointed European Capital of Culture in 2003. Contemporary art has been an important issue since the 1960s. Literature, fine arts, architecture and music were understood as inter-cultural studies and were concentrated and distilled in legendary venues like the Forum Stadtpark. Art has become an integral part of the Graz cityscape ever since, and although it was sometimes met with criticism, it has always provoked fruitful discussions.
Whatever todays major institutions such as the Opera, Theatre and venues of the Universalmuseum Joanneum (e.g. Kunsthaus, Neue Galerie and Alte Galerie) may produce, their equally attractive counterparts form an outspokenly strong and thriving free sector. Various theatres, art clubs, initiatives and galleries constitute a vital segment of todays culture scene.

Food design made in Styria

Purple beans with pink spots, pumpkin seed oil, and lettuce that only grows in Graz what does all this mean? Lets take the most Styrian of beans first. What had originally found its way from the Crimea to the green heart of Austria, subsequently became a popular culinary landmark: the mottled round runner bean. In Graz these spotted beans are enjoyed as a soup, side dish, salad or even as a sweet.
Talking of salad: there is no such thing as a Styrian salad without pumpkin seed oil dressing. This dark green precious oil (30 pumpkins are needed for just one litre!) has a unique nutty taste which is simply indescribable it needs to be experienced at first hand. The special thing about this pumpkin is: since its seeds have no hull, they are much easier to press. And what do Styrians pour the oil onto? Well, on real Styrian Lettuce of course! It can be identified easily by the dark red edges of its leaves. Need some nice wine to go with it? The best regional white wines grow in Southern Styria, some distance south of Graz. Known quite rightly as Styrian Tuscany, it is a must to explore the wine routes leading through the picturesque landscape of this region where quaint little farmhouses slumber amongst steeply-sloped vineyards. The same applies to the colourful local farmers markets, of which there are over a dozen in Graz. The largest ones are situated on the Kaiser-Josef-Platz and the Lendplatz squares what an experience! By the way, food design is one of the annual Graz Design Months focuses. The Foodline series deals with future culinary art. Enjoy it!
