Introduc6on
This essay is an analysis of the use of animated lms to inuence children, inves6ga6ng the its origins and jus6ca6ons. It par6cularly focuses on the contemporary lm Happy Feet(2006, dir. George Miller), an animated feature lm that was a box oce success but was widely cri6cised for its propaganda content. The essay will begin by dening propaganda using material from Nicholas Reeves book Power of Film Propaganda : Myth or Reality (2004) It will then briey examine the historical use of art as a medium to create poli6cal inuence in order to place the term propaganda in context. Evidence for this will be sourced from Phillip Taylors book Muni8ons of the Mind : A History of Propaganda (2003) The essay will then discuss in detail the poli6cal and cultural context that the cri6cism of Happy Feet arises from using key sources Elizabeth Bells book, From Mouse to Mermaid: The Poli8cs of Film, Gender, and Culture (1995).and Maire Messenger-Davies reader Dear BBC : Children, Television Storytelling, and the Public Sphere (2001) This will be compared to historical uses of anima6on to inuence children, with reference to Ian Wojcik- Andrews, Children's lms: history, ideology, pedagogy, theory (2000) and Sarah Smiths Children, Cinema and Censorship : From Dracula to Dead End (2005). It will then iden6fy the links between historical and contemporary propaganda anima6on for children. The essay will then inves6gate the way in which contemporary anima6on, such as adver6sing, is o]en used to inuence children, with informa6on from Maire Messenger-Davies Children, Media and Culture (2010), and discuss the reasons this could be jus6ed.
