Preparation
Before starting the update, perform the following steps to prepare the machine and your computer:

Ensure that In Use/Memory indicator on the operation panel of the machine is not lit or blinking. If it is, wait until all the jobs (i.e., sending and receiving faxes, copying, printing, and/or scanning) are finished, and then confirm that In Use/Memory indicator is turned off.

Ensure that Alarm indicator on the operation panel is not blinking. If In Use/Memory indicator is lit and Alarm indicator is blinking at the same time, jobs are held unfinished in the machine due to an error, possibly because toner or paper has run out, or the cartridge is not installed. Check the LCD for an error message and refer to the documentation that came with the machine to resolve the error.

Disconnect ALL the cables from the machine, including the power cord. Then reconnect ONLY the power cord and wait until the machine returns to the standby mode.

Restart your computer so that the memory is as fresh as possible. When your computer is fully restarted and ready to use, reconnect the USB cable directly to the machine and your computer. Do NOT use a USB hub to connect the cable, as it may lead to a connection error.

If Found New Hardware Wizard appears on your computer screen, click [Cancel]. The Found New Hardware Wizard is not used at any point during this update.

Your machine is now ready for firmware update. Install and run Canon MF Update Tool on your computer to perform the update.
