Overview
The Engineering World Health Organizations ESU Tester V1.0 is designed to test the power output of the Hard Cut (pure sinusoid) setting of an Electro Surgery Unit. Its 8 LEDs indicate different levels of power from 0 300W, each with an accuracy of approximately +/- 12W.

Safety
The most important safety factor surrounding the ESU Tester V1.0 has to do with the heating of the power resistor, which dissipates the ESUs energy in the form of heat. If the device is not given sufficient time to cool, the resistor can become extremely hot and cause burns / damage the device. Thus,

NEVER USE THE DEVICE FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS IN A 3 MINUTE PERIOD
(DOING SO CAN RESULT IN BURNS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE TESTER)
In addition, good electrical safety practices should be observed: Never use the ESU Tester v1.0 around water or in a damp area Do not operate the ESU Tester v1.0 on a metal / conducting surface. Make sure that the device is sitting on an insulated surface when being used. Do not use the ESU Tester v1.0 for any other power measurement applications Do not touch any of the exposed circuitry of the ESU Tester v1.0 while power from the ESU is being applied to it. Do not modify the circuitry of the ESU Tester v1.0 in any way. If the device ceased to function correctly, dispose of it. And of course, it should always be kept in mind that an ESU is a very dangerous instrument designed to cut through human tissue. Thus, the device should NEVER be used by anyone who is not qualified to operate an ESU.

Usage
The ESU Tester v1.0 is very easy to use. Simply connect the return electrode to the RETURN pad, and then place the pen on the PEN pad as show below.

Apply power to the device by activating the ESU in the Hard Cut setting, and watch the number of LEDs that light up in order to determine the amount of power being outputted by the ESU. Remember

NEVER USE THE DEVICE FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS IN A 3 MINUTE PERIOD
(DOING SO CAN RESULT IN BURNS AND/OR DAMAGE TO THE TESTER)
Also, it is critical that the ESU be in Hard Cut / Unblended Cut mode for the power measurement to be correct. If the ESU is not outputting a pure sinusoid, the results will not be accurate.

Power Levels
The power being outputted by the ESU is indicated by the number of LEDs lighting up, where each LED corresponds to the power listed in the table below.
LED # (from left to right) Power (When ESU is in Hard Cut Mode) 1 10W 2 30W 3 60W 4 90W 5 130W 6 180W 7 240W 8 300W

For instance, if LEDs 1-6 are illuminated, the ESU is outputting 180W of power. If LEDs 1-4 are illuminated, the ESU is outputting 90W of power. Of course, this is all provided that the ESU is in the Hard Cut / Unblended Cut mode. The power levels printed on the device ARE NOT ACCURACTE for other ESU waveforms such as Coag. or Blended Cut.

Accuracy
The accuracy of the device is dependant on the user, as there is a small degree of subjectivity introduced as to when the next highest LED is truly On. In general, the user should consider the next LED to be On when it has become over as bright as the preceding LEDs. Using this procedure, the aggregate accuracy of the device should be approximately +/- 12 W.

Maintenance
The ESU Tester v1.0 should be virtually maintenance free provided that it is kept in a cool dry place. If rust does begin to develop on the pads where the Pen and Return electrodes of the ESU attach, it can easily be removed with a small amount of sanding.
