Lab name: Abrasion of coarse aggregate by using Los Angeles machines

Lab No: 3.2
Date 5/3/12
1. Introduction
A lot of structure design criteria required an abrasion loss limit. The abrasion
of aggregate is losing weight due to crushing of aggregate. The abrasion also
caused reducing strength and surface area of aggregate.

2. Objective
To determine the resistance to degradation of coarse aggregate using the Los
Angeles machine.

3. Material
Los Angeles Machine
Balance with a precision of within 0.1% of the total weight of sample
Sieve of standard size ranging from 1.7 mm to 80.0 mm
(ASTM NO. 12-3)
Charge which shall consists of steel sphere averaging 46.8 mm in
diameter and each weighing between 390 and 445 g.

4. Apparatus
Los Angeles machine
Balance with a precision of within 0.1%of the total weight of sample
Sieve of standard size ranging from 1.7 mm to 80.0 mm (ASTM No. 123)

Charge which shall consists of steel spheres averaging 46.8 mm in

diameter and each weighing between 390and 445 g.

5. Procedure
The test sample shall be washed and oven-dried at 221 to 230 (105 to
110 ) to substantially constant weight, separated into individual size
fractions, and recombined to the grading of Table below, most nearly
corresponding to the range of sizes in the aggregate as furnished for the
work. The weight of the sample prior to test shall be recorded to the
nearest 1g.
The weight of sample taken shall have the value shown in the following
table

After placing the balls and the sample with the weight
in the cylinder
of the machine, the cylinder shall be rotate of 30-33 rpm by 500
revolutions for sample with grading division A, B, C, and D and 1000
revolutions for sample with grading division E, F and G.
The sample should be taken out from the machine and screened with a 1.7
mm wire sieve (ASTM No. 12). The sample remaining on the sieve is
washed with water and dried at 100-110 until a constant weight,
is
obtained.
The abrasion loss, R can be calculates as:

6. Result and analysis
In this experiment the gravel is assumed to be grade C, then using total weight
of sample 5000 g.
According to grading division C, the number of balls is 8.
After the machine operating, the sample is taken out and screened with a 1.7
mm wire sieve, wash with water and dried at 120 for 24 hrs. The weight after
dried is 4470 g. Hence,

Abrasion loss = 10.6%
