Task 1c: The Creative Sequenced Arrangement

Destructive work changes your audio files. Make a back up folder to keep your original files, well, in their original state. Keep your files ORGANISED in a folder. Try and colour code them. Prepare & use your audio files in the arrange window Drag and drop an audio file into your arrange window. Look at where this has imported your chosen file to. Now open your audio bin window (also in the media side bar). Have a look in the region drop down menu in the arrange window. There you will see a tie regions by position change. This will stretch or reduce your loop to fit the grid and therefore put something in time (as required). This is a quick and easy way to get a loop to roughly fit. This method also creates an automatic back up in your audio bin. TASK Try now editing your audio file in the arrange window to make a more creative 16 bar drum loop. Your thoughts: Smiley rating:

Sample Editor: A much more accurate way (but more destructive) is to edit your samples is to use the time and pitch machine (in the factory drop down menu) in the sample editor window. Here you can adjust the pitch and harmony too. TASK Go back to your original drum loop and reimport to your audio bin. Create a back up, and then destructively stretch the time to fit your tempo. Adjust the pitch to your delectation. Your thoughts: Smiley rating:

Consider this function for other loops and samples. Give two examples of what functions you might use in your arrangement: 1) 2) What other functions can you find in the sample editor menus? TASK Use one of these functions on your drum loop. Your thoughts: Smiley rating:

Remember, this work as yet does not have any Automation, FX, or processing.. Creating Your own SAMPLER instrument

Instructions Create a new, stereo software instrument track Plug in the EXS24 Click on the EDIT button to open the instrument editor Save your instrument (use a key here if you are using different Macs) The instrument is all about the following: Zones Pitch Key One shot Pitch Reverse You can simply drag your audio files into the zones and adjust the above parameters to suit. You can use loops here also It is also perfectly possible to have more than 1 sample triggered by a single key. Things to note: Save this instrument along with your Logic Song File. The sample will be triggered by the key check that the sample starts as you would wish, otherwise you can edit it in the Sample Editor (DESTRUCTIVE!!) The MIDI information you input controls the sample playback. TASK Create your own drum/percussion sampler kit. Then compose your own drum track using this kit. Your thoughts: Smiley rating:

How could you combine your audio drum tracks with your MIDI sampler drum tracks? Your thoughts: Smiley rating:

In addition to drum patterns, what other ways might you use the EXS24 sampler in your arrangement? Your thoughts: Smiley rating:

The sounds on this plug in synth (EVOC 20) is triggered by audio input that is side chained to the vocoder track. You can adjust all the parameters on both the VOCODER track and on the audio track to really create a dynamic sound here. Dont forget that any FX from the audio track will produce an additional effect on the Vocoder track. Adjust the original track volume also to the point of it not even being heard. TASK Try and link your Audio drum pattern to some chords or a melody in a vocoder Your thoughts: Smiley rating:

Now that you have a clearer understanding of Audio, Samplers & Vocoders consider the following for your Creative Sequenced Arrangement Automation Adjusting the sound envelope: ADSR EQ: sweeps, low pass/high pass filters etc, filters to create analogue/vintage quality Filters Modulation FX: chorus, phaser, tremolo, ringshifters Amps Reverbs Delays Lo-fi sounds: Scratching, Ambience, Tape quality etc Typical instruments/sounds of the style: Electric Piano, Strings, Organ, Guitars, Sax sections, etc Always (always always!!) link your work to examples of the trip hop style. You should then cite these examples in your logbook. There are 20 marks to be gained here (not part of the controlled conditions). The questions are always: 1) Explain how you developed your completed sequenced arrangement from your chosen stimulus. Refer to at least two of the following: melody; harmony; rhythm; texture & instrumentation; form & structure. (10 marks) 2) Identify the most important features of your chosen style, and explain how you have used them in your arrangement. (10 Marks)

TASK Here I want you to keep a record of tracks that have inspired your Creative Sequenced Arrangement Track & Artist: Feature: My interpretation (Smiley rating)
