John Wiley Course Description: The course introduces the molecular logic of life in general. It will include a survey of structure and reactions of major Biomolecules of cell i.e., carbohydrates, Lipids, Proteins and Nucleic Acids and Enzymes Objectives of the Course To emphasize the chemical universality of living things To provide the background for further study in biological sciences and advanced biochemistry courses To develop an understanding of names, structure and function of biological molecules and carry out their extraction , analysis and estimation To gain understanding of enzymatic reactions To develop a hypothesis and design and execute experiments to test it

Learning outcomes: After the successful completion of this course, students will be able to Understand the chemical nature of molecules of life Appreciate the universality of chemical make up of living things from simplest to the most complex life form

Use laboratory equipment and techniques for qualitative and quantitative analysis and design research projects in biochemistry, physiology and cell biology and to write a report of a scientific experiment.

Course Policies: Any student who misses the examination or fails to submit the assignment must make up for the default within 7 days of the original date; otherwise he/she will not be graded for that particular exam/assignment. There is no re-sit final examination Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. You will be dropped from the course if found cheating in the examination. Assignments and lab. Reports are expected to be your original work. Plagiarized work carries no credit Course evaluation: There will be two quizzes of 5 marks each Examinations: There will be two exams, a midterm of 20 marks of 50 minute duration and a final examination at the end of term of 40 marks and of 2 hours duration Assignment carries 10 marks.
