Y
Cavities are a problem for adults and children
alike. Some people seem more susceptible to cavities
than others, and the pH of the mouth and other
factors may play a role in the formation of cavities.
WHAT CAUSES A CAVITY?
Bacteria is the main culprit behind cavities.
Bacteria migrate into the mouth and are constantly
present on the gums, teeth and tongue. While most
oral bacteria are not harmful, certain types can prove
troublesome. Bacteria attach to the enamel of the
teeth and eventually start to form a colony. Proteins
present in saliva mix with the bacteria, which then
forms a hard layer on the tooth known as plaque.
Sugar plays a role in the process because the
bacteria use sugar as a food source. The sugar also
helps them stick to the tooth surface, making it
more difcult for bacteria to be cleared away with
saliva. As bacteria eat the sugar, they produce waste,
which is acidic. Over time, this acid can wear away
at the tough enamel on teeth, making it porous.
These holes can become bigger, eventually forming
what is known as a cavity.
It may take a while before you realize you have
a cavity because the enamel of the tooth doesnt
have nerve bers. But once the cavity becomes large
enough to expose the sensitive dentin within, pain
ensues.
PREVENTING CAVITIES
Cavities can be largely prevented by brushing
and ossing regularly to remove extra bacteria from
the teeth, and preventing them from attaching and
building up on the teeth.
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings also play a
preventative role. Dentists have equipment that can
effectively clean teeth in areas that can sometimes be
difcult to keep clean with just manual brushing.

Physical therapists help people improve their quality of
life by decreasing pain, restoring mobility and maximizing
function. Because of the specialized education they receive
in a variety of sciences physics, human anatomy, and
kinesiology (human movement), to name a few physical
therapists are experts on how the body works. Using
scientically-based treatment techniques, PTs can get
people moving and enjoying life again, in many cases
without surgery or prescription medication. Physical
therapists can also be instrumental in helping to avoid injury
in the rst place.
During an initial physical therapy visit, a patient can
expect an in-depth assessment of his or her specic pain,
functional limitations, and health conditions. Treatment
goals will also be discussed. After the physical therapist
performs a thorough evaluation, an individualized treatment
plan will be developed. The patient and PT will work
together as a team towards achieving goals that have been
set forth. Common treatment techniques employed during
physical therapy include therapeutic exercises, manual
therapy, gait training, transfer training, and prescription of
home exercise programs.
Physical therapists help establish better health habits
for their patients; they focus on teaching them how to
manage conditions so long-term health benets can be
achieved. When a patient is discharged from PT, he or she
can expect to have a set of exercises provided which should
be performed independently to help manage his or her
condition or set of symptoms. Patients who comply with
their physical therapist-prescribed home exercise program
will have the best chance of regaining mobility and quality
of life, even after discharge from therapy.
Because of a law called Direct Access, it has become
increasingly common for physical therapists to begin
seeing patients without a physician referral. Direct Access
allows patients timely access to PT as an entry point into
the health care system. Most health insurance plans cover
physical therapy obtained under this law, as long as the
therapist is Direct Access certied.
In addition to allowing the healing process to start sooner,
seeing a physical therapist rst can make good nancial
sense. There are times when a few sessions of PT are
sufcient for full recovery, and expensive x-rays, MRIs and
medications are not necessary. Visiting a PT rst might
also help avoid unnecessary copays. PTs refer patients to
physicians when the injury or condition is beyond the scope
of their expertise.
Choosing a physical therapist is much like choosing one
of your physicians. It is best to do some research to nd
a PT who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and will treat
