Sheet No. 2 due: Aug. 19, 2011

1. Consider a system taken from state 1 to state 2 along the path 1-a-2; 100 kJ of heat flows into the system and the system does 40 kJ of work. a. Evaluate the heat that flows into the system along the a 2 path 1-b-2 if it is accompanied by 20 kJ of work transfer by the system. (80 kJ) b. Calculate the work done and heat exchanged if the system returns to the initial state 1 along the straight p path 2-1.(-30 kJ, -90 kJ) 1 b c. Make calculations for the heat absorbed in the process 1-b and b-2 if internal energies values at state point 1 and b are given as 0 and 50 kJ respectively.(70kJ,10kJ) v 2. A closed system is changed from state1 to state 2 along path m. It is then returned to the initial state along either of two different paths, n and o. Values of Q and W along the three different paths are listed below for two different system X and Y. Determine the missing data for Q and W for (a) system X (b) Y:Q1-2=19) system Y. (X: W 1-2=9,Q2-1=2; S System X System Y Path Process Q W Path Process Q W m 1 to 2 12 ? m 1 to 2 ? +7 n 2 to 1 -7 -4 n 1 to 2 -4 +8 o 2 to 1 ? +5 o 2 to 1 +12 ? 3. The initial pressure, volume and temperature of air in a cylinder fitted with a movable piston are , p1=10 bar, v1=0.04 m3, and temperature 400K. If the air expands reversibly, calculate the work done, change in the internal energy and heat absorbed or rejected for each of the following method of expansions: a. Constant pressure, to a final volume of 0.2 m3 (160kJ, 400.2kJ, 560.2kJ) b. Isothermally, to a final volume of 0.2 m3 (64.38kJ, 0, 64.38kJ) c. According to law pV1.2=C, to a final volume of 0.2 m3 (55kJ, -27.52kJ, 27.48kJ) d. Adiabatically, to a final volume of 0.2 m3 (47.5kJ, -47.5kJ, 0) e. According to law pV2=C to final volume of 0.2 m3 (32kJ, -80.01 kJ, -48.01kJ) f. According to law p=(A/V2) (B/V) to a pressure of 1bar and V= 0.2 m3.(44.1kJ, -50kJ, 38 kJ) 4. It is proposed to compress 5 kg of CO2 from an initial state of 20 bar and 15 0C to a final state of 80 bar pressure. If the compression is done on a reversibly adiabatic manner, find the final temperature, the work transfer and change in internal Energy. Take for CO2 = 1.27 (387 K, -346 kJ, 346 kJ)

5. A volume of 0.2 m3 of air at 2000C and 10 bar is expanded reversibly until the volume becomes 0.8 m3 at 200C. Determine the amount of heat received or rejected and change in enthalpy.(30kJ, -266.6kJ) 6. 0.2 m3 of air at a pressure of 400kPa and 430 K is contained inside a thermally insulated cylinder. A movable piston fitted inside the cylinder is pushed outwards to a position where the pressure is 100 kPa. During this operation, the piston assembly does not exchange any heat with the surroundings. The air is then supplied heat at constant pressure till its enthalpy increases by 60 kJ. Evaluate the net work done by the gaseous system. What should be the index of expansion of a single reversible polytropic process if that is to produce the same work whilst operating between the same initial and final states? (82.59, 1.169) 7. 60 litres of an idle gas at 290 K and I bar is compressed adiabatically to 10 bar. It is then cooled at constant volume and further expanded isothermally so as to reach the condition from where it started. Evaluate: (a) pressure at the end of constant cooling , (b) change in internal energy during constant volume process (c) net work done and heat transfer during the cycle. (5.155bar, -13.85 kJ, -4.112kJ)
