Kaleidoscope of winter fun

The 22nd annual Trigs Klondike Days was held in Eagle River last Saturday and Sunday, attracting about 7,000 spectators for the event that celebrates the regions rich fur trading and logging history. The kaleidoscope of historical activities, geared for the entire family, was held at the Northland Pines High School grounds and field house and the adjacent Rocking W Stables grounds. The event is as much fun for the participants as the spectators, as there are more than a dozen activities all taking place at the same time, ranging from outdoor dog and horse pulls to snowshoe races and Hayward-style lumberjack competitions to historical encampments and horse rides for the youngsters. Two more students die

I woke up a bit later than usual, fed the dog, made coffee and for some reason turned on the TV while I checked email. I usually do not turn on the television in the daytime as I do not like the noise it creates. I prefer public radio. Today, when I turned it on, I learned that five students in small-town Ohio were shot as they sat in the school cafeteria. I knew we would eventually hear the condition of these students and more about the shooter. I knew it would be all over the news for a few days. What we will never hear is how this event changed the lives of every student and staff person in that school, every parent in that town and many others. Can you put yourselves in the shoes of the students sitting around those who were shot? Can you imagine how the teachers felt to know their students were subjected to this atrocity? And what about the parents waiting to know their son or daughter is physically OK? Can we stop long enough to let in the feelings those involved struggled with and continue to experience? And what about those who have been involved in a school shooting elsewhere in the country? An event like this opens wounds that are wrapped in ever-so-fragile membranes. Everyone involved in a school shooting and literally every person in our country is injured in a school shooting. Our sense of safety for ourselves and our kids is diminished. The problem is there are so many school shootings and shootings of other kinds in reality, on the news and in the movies and TV programs we tend to treat these events far too casually and move on with our lives until the next one occurs. We will hear talk of banning handguns, being more aware of students who dont fit in, bullying, training school staff to deal with these events and more. Experience tells me that little will change as a result, though each discussion is a seed planted for change someday. The problem is huge. Every year, we lose 12 to 20 kids to school shootings. School shootings date back to 1764 when 10 students and the schoolmaster were shot. They are not new. They have increased. Since 2000, we have lost 147 students to school shootings. In Europe, there have been 58 in that same time frame. In Canada, there have been two students killed in school shootings. Interesting statistics. Why so high here? Hmm! What do we do? A solution involves our culture that puts violence in front of kids from early on and tends to glorify it in movies and news; family issues; and so much more. It would take a united concerted effort to stop these tragedies. Dealing with the handgun issue would be an incredibly important place to begin. That in itself is huge considering peoples attitudes about guns, laws around the sale of guns and more. Why not begin? Parents, guardians, children with disabilities and their siblings as well as professionals are welcome at Family Fun Day Sunday, April 1, between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at The Waters of Minocqua, located at 8116 Highway 51 S. The Wisconsin Family Ties event will include workshops featuring Glenis Benson, Ph.D., a careerlong autism spectrum disorders consultant. This workshop can apply to a child with any disability. The cost of the event is $8 per person and will include a pizza or sandwich lunch, water park, workshops and volunteers to watch the children in the water park. Well, Im not going to say the exercise classes, because they are painful, ha ha. On the other hand, I enjoy the sense of humor and the cheering each other on . . . that gets us through the hard parts. I appreciate what each member brings to the group and the group as a whole working together to be healthier.

Weeks loss: 1 lbs. Total loss: 10 lbs.

I have enjoyed meeting the people I am working out with. The trainers are very nice and have helped each and every one of us in one way or another. Each person in this has been supportive in each of their own ways. They are very nice people and it would be real nice if we can all keep in contact and see how we are all doing from time to time and be there if we need each others support. I must say that I will be looking into some classes after this is all done. I would like to do more of this with other groups. I want to keep this lifestyle going. Even at a pound a week, my clothes fit better and my energy is higher. People tell me they can see it in my face and my clothes. And I love that!

Fitness Tip of the Week

Get out of your usual routine and be inspired by your surroundings to get active in different ways. This past week, the North Woods endured an enormous snowfall. Take events like this as a cue to get out there. Shovel the snow. Have a snowball fight. Go snowshoeing. Go skiing. When town shuts down and businesses are closed, thats the perfect hint from nature to enjoy a physical activity. Julia John

Age vs. Inactivity

Someone who is young may have more energy and less injury to deal with, but that doesnt mean they wont be dealing with lack of energy or lack of injury. Someone who has aged doesnt necessarily lack the energy and doesnt necessarily have injuries or chronic conditions. But even if they did, both populations can expect the same results in a weight-loss/strength-gaining program at an appropriate scale. Is exercising going to make a 70-year-old be able to perform the same as a 25-year-old? No. But exercising can reverse previous limitations due to inactivity. Remember the difference. Age is one thing. Inactivity is by far worse when it comes to living well. Always keep active.

Nutrition Tip of the Week

A 16-week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial with overweight adults found that supplementation with 1050 mgs of calcium and 300 IU of vitamin D resulted in a statistically significant decrease in belly fat (visceral fat), the type of fat most associated with disease risk. The addition of the basic nutrients resulted in a higher-quality weight loss meaning that the most dangerous type of fat was lost at a better rate in those with calcium and vitamin D3. Nutrients can help guide metabolism in the right direction so that you can get more benefit from a consistently good diet and exercise lifestyle.

Residents urged to get flu vaccine
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has encouraged people to get vaccinated against influenza in light of a recent increase in confirmed cases, state officials said. Influenza rates have risen recently in Wisconsin and nationwide. While flu season started late this year, it is not too late to be vaccinated, said Dr. Henry Anderson, state health officer. Anyone over 6 months old can receive the vaccine and supplies are available. This is the latest start to the influenza season in 29 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Flu symptoms include fever, body aches, fatigue, headache and sore throat, and appear one to five days after infection. Severe illness can include pneumonia. Anderson said he encourages people to take precautions to protect themselves against the spread of influenza: Get vaccinated. Wash hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Cover coughs and sneezes with arm or sleeve. Stay home when sick. Avoid close contact with others who are sick. Dont share drinking cups and straws. Clean commonly touched surfaces like doorknobs, refrigerator handles, telephones and faucets. For more information about influenza, visit dhs.wisconsin.gov.

Kohl Foundation selects Peters, Munds

The selection committee for the Herb Kohl Education Foundation and Fellowship program has announced recipients of the 2012 Herb Kohl Foundation awards for students and teachers. The $1,000 awards will be made to 100 teachers, their schools and 175 graduating high school students. Included in the selection were teacher Christina Peters of Northland Pines High School in Eagle River, who earned a Fellows award and student Sydney Munds of Phelps High School, who was named an Educational Foundation Initiative Scholar. Fellowship recipients are chosen for their superior ability to inspire a love of learning in their students, their ability to motivate others and for their leadership and service within and outside the classroom. Each Fellows high school also will receive a $1,000 grant. Fellowship recipients were selected by a statewide committee composed of civic leaders and representatives of education-related associations and the programs co-sponsors: Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation, Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Wisconsin Council of Religious and Independent Schools (WCRIS) and regional Cooperative Educational Service Agencies (CESA). Initiative Scholarship recipients, chosen by their schools, have demonstrated exceptional initiative in the classroom and have shown strong promise for succeeding in college and beyond, but have not yet received other academic-based scholarships. I think it is significant that Wisconsins students, teachers and schools are recognized for their devotion to education and learning, said Michael Lancaster, WCRIS president. The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl in 1990. To date the foundation has awarded $7.8 million to Wisconsin educators, students and schools. Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students and teachers, and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future, Kohl said. Letters notifying recipients of the awards were mailed by the Herb Kohl Foundation March 1. Regional recognition luncheons honoring the recipients will be held in a few weeks including a reception at noon and luncheon at 12:30 p.m. for CESA districts 7, 8 and 9 Saturday, March 24, at West De Pere High School, located at 665 Grant St. in De Pere. Sen. Kohl will attend all luncheons and will present awards to recipients.

A cappella group charms audience

It did not take long for the accomplished London-based a cappella singers, Voces8, to enchant the audience in the Northland Pines High School auditorium recently. Sponsored by the Headwaters Council for the Performing Arts (HCPA), the eight very professional event. This piece, consisting of vocal counterpoint in eight parts, was beautifully sung, each voice blending nicely with the whole. As each vocalist was introduced, he or she became an integral part of the background percussion and then began to sing a riveting Ive Got Rhythm by George Gershwin, which ended abruptly and brought whistles from the audience. As the ensemble switched gears to the haunting Peggy Lee hit Fever by Otis Blackwell, the traditional finger snapping began and led to the fine-controlled diction and the counter melodies performed as background percussion instruments. There were many highlights. A poignant eight-part version of Ed Rexs celebration anthem, This Marriage, in honor of the 2011 royal wedding, was an appeal for the couple to have a good marriage. Then the final piece in the first section was J.S. Bachs, Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf, from one of the composers funeral arrangements. As in the other selections, the eight parts were perfectly synchronized; the German performed with meticulous pronunciation. The second half fully entertained the audience when it opened with a spirited rendition of Al Jolsons Me and My Shadow. This lively selection readied the audience for an Elvis Presley version of Jailhouse Rock. Solos were performed by the countertenor and baritone parts. The six remaining vocalists became the percussion background, keeping the lively pace throughout. The traditional Steal Away, arrangement by David Blackwell, featured both bass and soprano solos that mesmerized the audience. These solos were especially moving, their dynamics powerful. Andrea Haines was the featured soprano soloist for the Bono rendition of Goldeneye, from the James Bond films. She was excellent in portraying the sensual voice and body language. The performance closed with a lively adaptation of George Gershwins Slap that Bass. The group easily implemented the accompanying percussion background, each singer periodically shifting to the lyrics. It ended with bass Dingle Yandell being slapped. A moving encore, The Opera Medley, was a compilation of several familiar operas. The transition from one to another was smooth and effortless. This was one of the most professional concerts sponsored by the HCPA. The audience was on its collective feet at the finale, begging for more. North Woods resident Barbara Wilkinson, formerly of Wheaton, Ill., taught literature at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill. She has written reviews and articles for local newspapers.

outstanding vocalists presented a creative, well-balanced performance that included a variety of selections from Renaissance counterpoint to the adaptations of jazz and contemporary selections skillfully arranged by the ninth member of the crew, Jim Clemens. The group delightfully blended their voices to intertwine in flowing textures. It consisted of two sopranos, two tenors, a baritone, a bass and two countertenors who created the contralto and mezzosoprano roles, all fine singers, both as soloists and as a group. Only on a few occasions did the none vibrato high notes seem a little penetrating. The repertoire itself was a stunning collection of choral interweaving. The ensemble brought an impressive stage presence to their production that was extremely fresh and charming. Beginning with a lively rendition of Renaissance composer Orlando Gibbons O Clap Your Hands, the talented vocalists set the mood for a

Fundraiser held for Frederick Place

At its recent winter convention, the Northwoods Association of Realtors held a fundraiser for Frederick Place, a 16bed temporary shelter in Rhinelander for those experiencing homelessness. Peggy Johnson-Wiessner, Northwoods Association of Realtors president, won a 50-50 drawing and donated all of her winnings ($275) to Frederick Place. Residents are admitted to Frederick Place on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on the availability of beds. While many applicants for admission will be referred by human service agencies, faith communities or government organizations, some will seek admission on their own. To make an appointment for an admission interview, call (715) 369-9777. During the intake process, individuals will be subject to alcohol and drug testing and a criminal background check.

The Vacationland Ministerial Association will sponsor an ecumenical Good Friday worship service Friday, April 6, at 1 p.m. The service will be held at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church, located at 5001 Highway G in Eagle River.

An ecumenical choir will participate in the service. Singers are needed and the public is welcome to join the group. Rehearsals will be held Sundays, March 18 and March 25, at 1 p.m. at St. Peters. For more information, call (715) 891-3548.

Nicolets Returning to Learning open house scheduled March 8

Jennifer Majewski of Eagle River always knew she wanted to return to college. Taking that step to enroll, however, was something that eluded her for a number of years. I had a lot of questions that I didnt really know how to get answers to, she said. That was really holding me back. A friend told her about a Returning to Learning open house at Nicolet Area Technical College and she decided to attend. I am so happy I went, Majewski said. It was such a positive experience and was exactly what I was looking for. It was so nice to be able to talk to people who had answers to my questions. It made all the difference. The Returning to Learning event Majewski attended took place last fall. Today, she is enrolled in two online classes at Nicolet College and she is following her dream to become a phlebotomist. I can guarantee you, if it hadnt been for that event, I would not be back in college, she explained. Majewskis experience is not unique; many other adults also discovered that the open house, geared specifically for adults looking to return to college, provided the extra push they needed to enroll, according to Sandy Kinney, Nicolets executive director of communications and community initiatives. Returning adults tend to have lots of questions about college, and its common for many of them to be a little scared about diving into the process, Kinney said. What we wanted to do with this open house was remove all of those barriers. The first event was so successful, in fact, that the college decided to hold another Returning to Learning event, Kinney added. The next open house is scheduled Thursday, March 8, from 4:30 to 8 p.m., in the Northwoods Center on the Rhinelander campus. Those interested can drop by the casual event anytime to learn about a variety of topics. These include how to enroll; pay for college; balance school, work and family; and determine what to study. Informal roundtable discussions will begin every 30 minutes on these topics and others. Information booths also will be available. Those attending will have the opportunity to speak with current adult students about their experiences, learn about new programs at the college, and get a hands-on feel for taking classes online. Nicolet College will waive the $30 application fee for all people who complete an application for admission that evening.

Plum Lake reports new pier progress

Plum Lake Town Clerk/ Treasurer Sharon Brooker has announced that the pilings of the old town pier have all been pulled. It was reported that the pilings were between 12 and 16 feet long and some were located only 4 feet beneath the lake bed. The pilings were pulled to make room for new ones which will be closer together and provide greater support for the new pier. Marcus Dreger, who will drive new pilings into place, indicated he should finish that part of the project by Friday, March 9, Brooker reported. The town has planned for a volunteer building crew to install the rest of the new pier and decking Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11. The town hall will be open for the workers to stop in for hot food and coffee.

One reason is that it often has no symptoms in its early, more treatable stages. Without routine screenings, many people dont know they have cancer until its in an advanced stage. Q. Why is a colonoscopy suddenly important at age 50? A. If you have a family history of colon cancer or other risk factors, your doctor may recommend you begin colonoscopy exams at an earlier age, but in the general population, the risk of colon cancer increases dramatically after age 50. Over 90% of colon cancers occur in people over 50 years old. Q. Does it hurt? A. Although people grimace at the idea, colonoscopies are not painful. Most patients are given medication to help them relax and drowse through the procedure. Other than the discomfort of feeling bloated from the air puffed into the colon, most patients dont recall the procedure. Q. What if they nd something? A. If a polyp is found, a small piece of tissue (biopsy) is taken out through the colonoscope. The biopsy is sent to a lab to be checked under a microscope for cancer or pre-cancer cells. Most commonly, polyps are removed. Q. What should I do now? A. Discuss with your primary care provider whether colonoscopy with GI Associates is right for you or contact GI Associates directly.
