MARCH 4, 2012 SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

HISTORY OF SALVATION
The first reading today continues the history of salvation narrative that we hear throughout Lent this year. Todays story was among the best-loved in the Jewish tradition (surely Joseph told the story to young Jesus as he formed him in the ways of their faith); the early fathers of the Church were very fond of it as a means of explaining the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. The overall tone of the first reading, psalm, and second reading seems a little incongruous with the dazzling Gospel, until we remember that the Transfiguration was placed as the Gospel for this Sunday precisely to remind us of the glory that awaits those who live faithfully and obediently to the will of God. In the life of Jesus, it is a preview of the glory of his resurrection; for us it is a glimpse of the destiny of those who continue, as we heard in last weeks Gospel, to repent and believe in the Good News. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary selfdenial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

Saint for March | Saint Patrick

Saint Patrick, the apostle to Ireland, is one of the worlds most famous and celebrated saints. His missionary zeal arguably matched that of Saint Paul, whose missionary activities, though oftentimes a severe struggle, remained in the territories governed by Roman law. Saint Patrick, however, was the first recorded Christian missionary to evangelize beyond the bounds of Roman rule and into the darkness of what was then considered the end of the earth. Patricius was born in Roman Britain around 385. His father was a public official and church deacon. He was kidnapped by Irish slave traders while in his mid-teens and forced into slavery; herding sheep on remote Irish hillsides under harsh conditions. Spending most of his time in solitude, he grew to trust in God and embrace a life of prayer. After six years, he made a dangerous and harrowing escape over land and sea that finally resulted in a return to his parents. They found him, at age 22, a serious visionary who sought holiness and friendship with Christ Patrick entered the priesthood, and in time, was sent to evangelize the Irish. He was appointed the bishop of Ireland in 435 and established his see at Armagh in the north. The Irish were known to be wild, unrestrained and corrupt. But Patricks success in making converts to Christianity was nothing less than astonishing, even to him. He traveled to most parts of Ireland, winning the hearts of the Celtic people by his deep faith, humility, simplicity and pastoral care. He took great measures to incorporate pagan rituals into his teachings on Christianity. Since the ancient Celts honored their gods with fire, Patrick used bonfires to celebrate Easter; and he placed the sun, a powerful Celtic symbol, around the Christian cross to create the now familiar Celtic cross. Patricks profound witness to the Gospel eventually brought an end to human sacrifices, trafficking of women, and slavery in general. He is the first person in recorded history to publicly oppose slavery; a protest that would not be taken up again for another millennium. His writings reveal a keen understanding of stewardship as well. He wrote that whatever good he had been able to accomplish on behalf of the Lord, in his meager, unlearned, and sinful state has been a gift from God. Over the centuries, Irish immigrants would spread their devotion to Saint Patrick as they established the Catholic faith around the world. He is thought to have died on March 17, 461, the date which became his feast day.

Christ the King Parish Presents A Morning of Other Pro-Life Issues Saturday, March 10, 2012 - 9:00 a.m. until Noon in the Parish Life Center
Enslaved in America: Human Traffickingis the most insidious and horrific crime of this age. Those caught in its web by force, fraud or coercion are put into commercial sex and/or forced labor for one reason - GREED. It generates $32 billion worldwide annually. Trafficking of humans is the second largest criminal industry in the world and is the fastest growing exceeded only by the drug trade. This crime has gone unnoticed in big cities and small towns. But, that is changing! Sister Jean M. Okroi, IBVM is an educator, spiritual director and a presenter on Human Trafficking. Her passion is to raise awareness of this evil in our midst. In the past eight years, she has presented this new slavery to various age groups, hospitals and school staff, along with the local neighborhood and church groups. She will open your eyes to what could be happening in your neighborhood or to what you would rather ignore. Pro-Life Means More Than You Think: Carol Wright will be speaking at Christ the King Parish, in Lombard, in the Parish Life Center. Carol will help explore how our traditional values and teachings of the Catholic Church are under attack. From the new regulations that will require us to pay for free birth control for everyone to the inevitable rationing of health care at the end of life. Human embryos are being destroyed in a futile effort to find cures that are already taking place with ethical adult stem cells. Become informed and involved. Carol Wright: Carol has been active in the pro-life movement for 40 years. She was president of Illinois Citizens for Life for five years, and currently is their Publicity Director. Carol also served on all levels of the Council of Catholic Women. She served twice on the Diocesan Board, and is currently serving on the Western DuPage Kendall Deanery Board (for the past 29 years). At the parish level, she is involved with the Council of Catholic Women, and is the Pro-life Coordinator at St. James the Apostle in Glen Ellyn. EWTN Files Suit to Block Contraception Mandate

Eternal Word Television Network filed a lawsuit today in U.S. District Court in Birmingham, Ala., seeking to halt the federal governments imposition of its contraception mandate and to have the court declare the federal rule unconstitutional. The lawsuit names Kathleen Sebelius, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and other federal agencies, as defendants. The network released a statement today regarding the action. The network is the first lay Catholic organization to challenge the constitutionality of the HHS final rule, approved by the Obama administration on Jan. 20. North Carolinas Belmont Abbey College and Colorado Christian University, based in Denver, have both filed suit. All three are represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, the public-interest law firm that recently won a unanimous Supreme Court ruling in Hosanna Tabor v. EEOC, a closely watched First Amendment case. Becket is representing EWTN pro bono. The Register is a service of EWTN. Michael Warsaw, EWTNs president and CEO, expressed regret at the necessity of taking legal action to defend the networks constitutional right to the free exercise of religion. We had no other option but to take this to the courts, said Warsaw. Under the HHS mandate, EWTN is being forced by the government to make a choice: Either we provide employees coverage for contraception, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs and violate our conscience or offer our employees and their families no healthinsurance coverage at all. Neither of those choices is acceptable.

Leadership Meeting Announcement

The next meeting of the Christ the King Leadership will be on Tuesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Early Learning Academy. The theme for this meeting will be on parish leadership, volunteerism and organization. Each commission will discuss how new leaders are brought on to the team, length of service, and organization of each commission. A review of Strategic Plan suggestions of parish finance for each commission will also be discussed following the parish finance presentation made at the last Leadership meeting in February. All parishioners are welcome to attend.
