An Atlantic Crossing by Raft

Raft Illustration by kind permission of The Sunday Times.

Introduction This is an extraordinary and challenging expedition. In 2005 Anthony Smith will be 79 years old...and his crew will all be over 65. Anthony and his three crew plan to cross the Atlantic by raft, departing from the Canaries towards the end of 2005 and arriving at the Bahamas after some 50 days. It will be an adventure on a specially designed and unique sailing Raft a journey of some 3000 miles.

We had over 120 responses to recruit crew after placing a small ad. Surgeons, SAS officers, coal miners, retired sailors all responded...

The Raft l This will be constructed with polyethylene gas piping, with the cross-members heat-welded into place. l Only two 15 inch pipes are necessary for buoyancy; the others will contain fresh water or ballast. l An aluminium mast will carry a single rectangular sail. l The raft will be 40-feet long by 25-feet wide. l A half size version was built in Australia last year in Port Phillip Bay (off Melbourne). Initial Media coverage l We have already secured a commission from TV to feature programmes that will trace the considerable preparations, the construction, journey, and the arrival of the craft in the Bahamas. l The Sunday Times recently ran a full page on the project. l The Daily Telegraph has run various editorials on the project during February 2005. l Anthony has appeared on ITN News and many other radio and TV networks in the UK and Canada following the initial brief announcement of the project. l He was recently on the Channel 4 Richard and Judy show. l And a book on the adventure has been commissioned by Weidenfeld & Nicolson.

Support from Help the Aged The organisers have won the full support of a major charity dedicated to concerns of the elderly. Help the Aged is excited about working with Anthony Smith and his team. We see ther e is a perfect synergy with the Ocean-Odyssey project and the goals of Help the Aged . T.C. Opportunities for a major sponsor. After 20 months of planning, financed by the organisers, the Ocean-Odyssey team are now seeking financial backing for this exciting and unique undertaking. A venture, which the team believes, has and will produce outstanding and substantial multi-media benefits for sponsors. Exclusive sponsorship or multi-sponsorship opportunities are available. Multi media coverage. l TV programme coverage. l TV national and regional News programmes. l National and local press and magazines. l There will be a dedicated website. www. ocean-odyssey.com l Richard and Judy pre and post voyage TV interviews. Sponsorship rights. l Name title association- XXXXX Ocean-Odyssey l Credits on TV, film, press releases. l Hospitality at pre-screening events. l Strong visual signage on board Raft, crew clothing, and at land base sites. A Marketing Partnership. l Increased sponsor brand awareness. l Image enhancement- association with the positive values of this unique project and with the TV programmes.

Tamysn Clark. Events Manager. Help the Aged

Both financial and product supply sponsorship is currently being sought.

Sponsor branding will be used on all surfaces. At sea and in land based operations.

Our objectives for the project. l To increase the profile of the older generation through all the media. And to enhance the recognition that challenges can be undertaken at any age. l To increase the profile of the sponsors, thus ensuring a profitable and worthwhile relationship between the sponsors, their staff, and the Ocean-Odyssey team. l To ensure the project has the best communication equipment on board for transmission of reports to websites, TV and radio news channels, throughout the voyage. l To ensure that the special knowledge and experience gained in the design and construction of this project is maintained and used to develop raft-building in the future. Conclusion This is a unique opportunity for a sponsor to get involved with one of the most challenging events of 2005 which will provide substantial benefits for the sponsor company. We believe that Anthony's tenacity, combined with his long history of personal ability in expeditions throughout the world, will make this an exciting and successful event. Our entire team will be working hard to ensure that the sponsors, Anthony's, and the crew objectives are all met. We look forward to meeting with you to discuss this project when we can give you financial details of the sponsorship opportunities. Thank you for your consideration.
