A resident grilled the town-
ship council over a recent deci-
sion to agree to a contract with
a construction consulting
company for the amount of
$331,000 for the township com-
plex project.
Roger Boyell levied some
caustic comments to the town-
ship council for spending
more than $300,000 with a con-
struction consulting company
for a project that hasnt even
broken ground yet.
Why now? Why not when
construction is near? Boyell
asked. Were still several
months away.
Township Manager Scott
Carew said while construction
is still months away, there are
still aspects of the project lead-
ing up to the construction that
require the experience and ex-
pertise of a construction-con-
sulting company.
The township doesnt want
to get to a point where its
ready to begin the construc-
tion, he said, and then bring in
a consulting company that
says that several other aspects
need to be addressed before
construction begins.
Its much more prudent to
bring them in at this point, he
said, and to pay them hourly,
so as not to accumulate too

Building named after teacher

A longtime teacher at the
Moorestown Friends School will
be forever remembered by the
school as a new classroom will
bear his name.
The Moorestown Friends
School Committee (board of
trustees) approved a resolution to
name the schools new classroom
building on the Greenleaf proper-
ty for Neil Hartman, who taught
at the school for 33 years.
The official dedication of Hart-
man Hall will take place on the af-
ternoon of Friday, May 4, to kick
off the schools alumni weekend.
The near $4 million refurbish-
ment of the Greenleaf property
will cater to students in the sixth-

through 12th-grades.
The school has been at full ca-
pacity for several years now, Com-
munications Director Mike
Schlotterbeck said, and math and
science teachers have been shar-
ing classrooms and using confer-
ence room space to teach stu-
dents.
Hartman taught math for
decades at the school, but his
legacy goes far beyond just a
mere math teacher.
Neil Hartman was one of the
larger-than-life teachers who
made MFS a very special place in
the 1950s, 60s and 70s. He had a
huge influence on me and on an
entire generation of Moorestown
Friends students. Naming the
new classroom building for Mr.
Hartman is a fitting way to honor
his memorable achievements and
contributions as a teacher, coach
and person, said Larry Van
Meter, head of school and 1968
alum.
Hartman Hall will house eight
math classrooms, a choral music
suite, a faculty workroom and a
student lounge. The middle and
upper school math department
faculty will be moving to the new
facility in April.
Hartman Hall will also contain
a new technology lab, conference
room, office space and student
lockers.
Students will make the estimat-
ed 1.5 minute walk between Hart-
man Hall and the main MFS cam-
pus on a paved trail originating
just outside the tennis courts
near the field house.
Its not a goal in your life to
have your name on a building. It
was the farthest thing in my
mind. I was quite shocked, he
said.
One of the best perks though is
hearing from students and col-
leagues from his past. Many have
been writing him letters and call-
ing Hartman to congratulate him
on the honor, he said.
Hartman joined the MFS com-
munity in the fall of 1952. In addi-
tion to teaching math, he taught
scripture, science and coached
tennis. His countless extra-curric-
ular contributions to the school
include acting in faculty-student
productions, leading square
dances, co-chairing the schools
Bicentennial Celebration, co-edit-
ing the schools history published
in 1986, being a mainstay at the
lobster dinner and Dinner
Among Friends, and teaching the
May Pole Dance to scores of MFS
students.
Hartman retired from the math
department in 1985 after 33 years
in the classroom. He served on
the MFS School Committee from
1997 to 2005.

Mildred Brelsford
February 19, 2012
Mildred (nee Novak) Brelsford,
of Moorestown, passed away on
Feb. 19, 2012. Brelsford was born
and raised in Newark, N.J. After
high school she worked at N.J.
Bell Telephone Company in
Newark. Brelsford met her hus-
band Harlin, who was employed
by RCA in Harrison, N.J., while
both were actors in an adult
church Christmas pageant. After
Harlin was transferred to Cam-
den, the 1939 newlyweds moved
first to an apartment in
Collingswood, and then to their
first home in Haddon Heights.
They became active members of
Haddonfield Presbyterian
Church, and Mildred joined the
Haddon Fortnightly Womens
Club. In 1949, they moved with
their young daughter, Anyce, to
what was then Delaware Town-
ship, later renamed Cherry Hill,
while continuing as members of
the Haddonfield Presbyterian
Church. At this time Harlin was
transferred to RCAs Missile and
Surface Radar Division in
Moorestown, where he then
worked for many years.
Brelsford became active in the
Ladies Auxilliary of Cooper Hos-
pital. Brelsford and Harlin both
liked playing bridge, and enjoyed
traveling, taking their daughter
on many trips throughout the
United States. Later the couple
traveled together throughout the
world, enjoying these trips and
providing lasting memories.
After Harlins death, Brelsford
joined Trinity Presbyterian
Church in Cherry Hill, where her
daughter, her husband Mark and
their children Randy and Erika
were active members.
In 1983, Brelsford moved to an
apartment in Moorestown, still
an avid bridge player and traveler.
In 1996, the Evergreens in
Moorestown became her final
home, where Brelsford continued
playing bridge and enjoying ac-
tivities there, as she was able. She
especially enjoyed being with her
family, which now included
Erikas husband Sean, their chil-
dren Ethan and Kiera, and
Randys wife Amanda and their
son Ian.
Before her death, Brelsford had
decided that contributions made
in her memory should be directed
to Parkinsons Disease Founda-
tion, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509,
New York, NY 10018.

heres not a lot that Gov.
Christie does that doesnt pro-
voke a heated response from
someone, somewhere. Budget cuts, ed-
ucation reform, you name it, shortly
after the governor stops talking, some-
one tears into his proposal. And thats
not a bad thing. We mention it to point
out that the governor has a habit of
diving head-first into controversy
over and over again.
However, the governor is now back-
ing a constitutional amendment to re-
form the bail system in the state. Its a
move that he calls common sense.
We agree.
The measure would allow judges to
consider such things as the defen-
dants past dangerous behavior before
sending that person back out onto the
streets, often to cause more problems,
intimidate witnesses, etc.
This is a proposal that should re-
ceive widespread, bi-partisan support.
Its a move that is long overdue. Its a
move that will keep people safe and
help law enforcement put people be-
hind bars and keep them there.
The governor points to a number of
statistics from a 2007 study by the Bu-
reau of Justice Statistics to support
his measure: about one-third of re-
leased defendants were charged with
one or more types of pretrial miscon-
duct; nearly one-fourth had a bench
warrant issued for failing to appear;
and about one-sixth were arrested for
a new arrest with more than half of
these new arrests for felonies.
Indeed, at some point, someone is
going to object to depriving someone
who is not convicted of his or her con-
stitutional rights. And thats a reason-
able debate to hold.
But well side with the governor on
this one. Defendants who have a histo-
ry of violence, who are a threat to the
community, and who are likely to try
to intimidate witnesses against them
need to be locked up.
Its time to take a stand for public
safety. Passing this amendment would
do just that.

nity to keep dangerous people off the
streets unable to commit additional
crimes or to intimidate those testify-
ing against them.
Rummage sale is March 14
at First Presbyterian Church
The 95th-annual rummage sale at First
Presbyterian Church of Moorestown (101
Bridgeboro Road) will be held on Wednes-
day, March 14, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Core exercise program
on Thursday mornings
The Moorestown Department of Parks
and Recreation will sponsor a be strong
and flexible core exercise program on
Thursday mornings from 9 to 10 a.m. on
the third floor of the Church Street Recre-
ation Center.
The session runs from Thursday, March
29 through Thursday, May 24, (no program
April 12).
Be strong and flexible is designed to
strengthen the core and overall body
strength, balance and flexibility. The pro-
gram is based on a mix of yoga, pilates and
strength training.
The program will be conducted by Cindy
ODonnell, and will include a fee of $99 for
residents and $109 for non-residents for the
eight-week program. Participants should
bring a mat and a water bottle.

Lenten organ recital series
at The Evergreens
The Evergreens, a continuing care re-
tirement community in Moorestown, will
host a special Lenten organ recital series of
recitals, featuring different organists from
several area churches.
The recitals will be held every Tuesday
afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in the Emilie Crock-
er Williams Chapel at The Evergreens.
The schedule of the organ recitals is as

phase, but the township will use
the consulting company to get
ready for that phase, Carew said.
We all want to make sure that
this is done correctly. There are
decisions that must be made now,
and I feel comfortable letting a
company give us input that has
worked in the township with suc-
cess in the past.
Mayor John Button agreed
with Carew and said the town-
ship needs to work together as a
team to make sure that this proj-
ect is successful and stands for
decades to come.
Grayhawk, he said, has had
tremendous success in the town-
ship in the past.
In other township news:
Bids for the fields project have
been delayed by one week, Carew
said, as the township and recre-
ation groups brought bid specifi-
cations back in to include two
other types of artificial turf.
Carew said when the bids were
originally published, they only
contained one type of artificial
turf for the fields. Three more
were included in the new bids, he
said, which should save thou-
sands of dollars on the final proj-
ect.
This will bring in a larger pool
of bidders and thus make the
project more competitive, Carew
said.

School Middle School MATH-
COUNTS team won the Ocean
chapter competition held on Sat-
urday, Feb. 4 at Ocean County Col-
lege.
The team of Lilla Butterworth
(Merchantville), Kieran McMe-
namin (Burlington), Samuel Mil-
ligan (Cherry Hill) and Joshua
Murdy (Hainesport) placed first
among 10 teams.
In the individual competition,
Joshua Murdy placed second
overall in the individual competi-
tion and Samuel Milligan placed
10th. Five other MFS mathletes
competed as individuals: Zachary
Day (Marlton), Anisha Pande
(Hainesport), Priya Patel (Cin-
naminson), Braeden Sloan
(Moorestown) and Margaux Vel-
lucci (Hainesport). All students
are eighth-graders.
The MFS team and Murdy now
advance to the state MATH-
COUNTS competition to be held
on Saturday, March 10 in Somer-
set.

The Perkins Center needs a bit
more than $7,500 more to begin
painting at the facility.
Representatives report the
group has currently raised
$32,461 of the $40,000 goal to re-
paint the exterior of Perkins Cen-
ters Moorestown home.
The center received $15,000
from a grant from The 1772 Foun-
dation, $10,000 from Holman Au-
tomotive and $5,000 from the
Moorestown Breakfast Rotary.
Some $2,461 has come from in-
dividual donations within the
Perkins Center community, and
with just a few more theyll be on
their way to completing the cam-
paign.
To chip in to this effort with a
donation, just click on the Do-
nate Now box on Perkins Cen-

center.org. The goal is to secure
the funds for the project by April
1, which is less than six weeks
from now.
Repainting Perkins Centers
1910 Tudor Revival main house
and 1930 Craftsman Style car-
riage house is critical to preserv-
ing these historically important
buildings and to the continuation
of the important work that goes
on inside.
The proposed renovation will
include stripping the old paint
down to the original wood, minor
repairs and new paint on the two
structures.

Members of Moorestown Crew
participated in a recent indoor
rowing competition at Haddon
Township High School. Indoor
rowing races help teams and indi-
viduals see the results of their ef-
fort and work over the winter, in-
door, conditioning season. The
gym is lined with erg (rowing)
machines and an electronic board
that will allow coaches and spec-
tators to track the progress of
each rower over the course of the
2,000-meter race.
Rowers are accompanied by a
coxswain or coach to help them
keep them focused, fast and push-
ing for a personal best in their
time. Meanwhile family, friends
and teammates clap and call out
words of encouragement. At the
end of the race, rowers are spent
physically and mentally.
Moorestown Crew had a great
showing.
The mens varsity and novice
squads placed second in the team
competition, narrowly missing
first place to Christian Brothers
Academy, while the womens var-
sity and novices captured the top
team spot.
Will Van Fossen posted the
fastest time of the day for the
team with a 6:38.5 time, which
garnered him a silver medal,
placing second in the mens high
school light weight category.
Andrew Hendrickson placed
third, capturing the bronze medal
for the same category. Also finish-
ing in the top 10 of the high
school mens lightweight were
Will Roman (4th) and Brian
Regan (9th). Jacob Henry took
top honors in the mens high
school open weight category win-
ning a gold medal with a time of
6:39.0.
Gabrielle Martin had the
fastest womens time of 7:50.3
placing first in the womens high
school light weight category. Also
placing in the top 10 for this cate-
gory included Peyton Conrey
(6th), Jessica Buck (8th) and Katie
Stevens (10th). Claire Wixted took
the bronze medal placing third in
the high school womens open
weight category. Sam Trivinia
and Olivia Perham finished 8th
and 9th respectively in the same
category. Another highlight of
the day was Jessica Farbers first
place finish in the high school
womens novice category. Other
novice women in the top 10 finish-
ers included Kelly Bowman (4th),
Cassandra Pendino (6th), and
Sofia Gabin-Legato (8th).
The teams coxswains also par-
ticipated in a 1,000-meter race
called the Coxswains Chal-
lenge.
In this case, the tables are
turned and team rowers cox or
coach the coxswains who spend
the majority of the season help-
ing their boats go fast without
rowing with an oar.

Cooper 125 Gala on March 24 will
benefit Cooper Cancer Institute
The Cooper Foundation of
Cooper University Hospital will
hold the Cooper 125 Gala on Sat-
urday, March 24, at the Hyatt at
the Bellevue in Philadelphia.
The Gala is being hosted by
Sandra and George E. Norcross
III, chairman of the board of
Cooper Health System, in celebra-
tion of the hospitals 125th an-
niversary.
The event will raise funds to
support the new $100 million
Cooper Cancer Institute, which
will break ground in Camden this
spring.
The Cooper 125 Gala is going
to be one for the history books, as
we toast a legacy and forge a des-
tiny, said Susan Bass Levin,
president and CEO of the Cooper
Foundation. All proceeds from
the Gala will support the Cooper
Cancer Institute, which will bene-
fit cancer patients across the re-
gion by offering advanced diagno-
sis and treatment options in a
modern and sophisticated med-
ical setting.
The new, 100,000 square-foot
Cooper Cancer Institute is the
centerpiece of the hospitals $50
million capital campaign and will
allow Cooper to expand its cancer
services to ensure South Jersey
residents have access to compre-
hensive care without having to
leave the state.
Once complete in 2013, the
Cooper Cancer Institute will
bring its range of centers and
programs together on one site,
just steps away from the hospital
and the new medical school.
The construction of the Cooper
Cancer Institute is a significant
milestone in Coopers tradition of
outstanding achievement a tra-
dition that began in 1887 with the
opening of a four-story, stone
building with just 30 beds to serve
the indigent population of Cam-
den.
Today, Cooper offers a full-
range of health services in Cam-
den and the surrounding suburbs
including prevention, primary
care, specialty ambulatory servic-
es, and all levels of inpatient
acute care and sub acute care.

her Suzuki Method Book 1 gradu-
ation requirements by perform-
ing a solo piano recital at
Moorestown School of Music re-
cently.
Kudin played the entire book
from memory as well as a show-
off piece, Scherzo by Dmitry
Kabalevsky.
Her parents, Oksana Kudin and
Anthony Kudin, hosted a recep-
tion in her honor after the recital.
They noted: Anastasia started
playing piano at Moorestown
School of Music when she turned
4 last October. It has been a very
exciting year and a half filled
with daily practice, rehearsals
and recitals. There were tears of
frustration and tears of accom-
plishment. We want to thank Ms.
Tina for the time and energy she
put into teaching Anastasia.
Under Ms. Tinas guidance and
patience, Anastasia grew from be-
ginner pianist to an advanced
Suzuki student.
Anastasia studies piano at
Moorestown School of Music
with Tina Schofield using the
Suzuki method, which nurtures
the students ability through en-
couragement and praise.
She is a pre-kindergarten stu-
dent of Neicy at Cherry Hill
Montessori School Moorestown

Suzuki music instruction in

Music Together, a preschool
music program for children birth
through kindergarten, is offered
six days a week. The school is lo-

Moorestown wrestler Paul
Johnson, 17, was headed to Ox-
ford, Pa., recently, where he was
to compete for an opportunity to
be the Pennsylvania Interscholas-
tic Athletic Associations region-
al champion for Southeast Penn-
sylvania.
If he pulls that off, the next
competition is for state heavy-
weight champion.
Johnson also plays varsity foot-
ball for St. Josephs Prep in
Philadelphia, where hes an
honor student.
Hes a good athlete, said
Pauls wrestling coach Kevin
Martin. Hes a hard worker. So
he can do both.
Martin said Johnson won the
Section 8 wrestling champi-
onship on Feb. 18, and then went
on to win the District 12 champi-
onship on Feb. 25.
That currently makes him the
top-seeded wrestler among about
60 schools in southeastern Penn-
sylvania.
Martin said Johnson is the first
student from St. Josephs to win a
sectional title in six years. Mak-
ing his achievement even more
impressive? Hes only a junior.
Johnson said hes looking for-
ward to the competition. Al-
though football is his favorite
sport, he really enjoys wrestling
which hes been doing for nine
years.
He admitted its difficult some-
times, balancing the athletics and
schoolwork.
There are only so many hours
in the day, he said. But I love the
challenge.

faculty members will be the fea-
tured artists in a benefit recital
on Saturday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
Each instructor performing is not
only a trained teacher and regis-
tered member of the Suzuki Asso-
ciation of the Americas, but also
an accomplished musician in her
own right.
Performers are Laura Knightly
and Jennifer Mullen, violin;
Kathi Stokes, cello; and Anne Jad-
win, Emily Jennings, Tina

Works of the evening will in-
clude pieces by Johann Sebastian
