Design Steps for Additional Plates

Additional plates are used when stocks is not available of our required need . It is a spare type of plates which are used to safe the section. 1. Find out the properties of available section from steel table. 2. Calculate the Maximum Bending Moment of Applied Load and Dead Load. 3. Find out the section moudlus for the applied loadings by using

S =
Check for the Section Modulus , If

S ( Actual ) > S (
OR

Available

then we have to provide to Additional plates.

4. Designing the Additional plates . Calculate the area of the Flange plate. Area of flange Plate ( Ap ) = S (applied) - S (available) / Depth of Section Width of Additional plate (Wp) = (L / 35)

Width of Additional Plate ( Wp ) = Width of available flange + 2

*From both width of additional plate we will select the maximum one . Thickness of Additional Plate ( Tp ) = Area of Additional plate / Width of Additional Plate

5. Calculate the Section Modulus due to Self Weight The total weight of the provided section is equal to the weight of available section. Total Weight of Section = Weight of available section + 2 ( width of flange plates ) * (thickness of flange plates) * (Density of Steel ) * ( 1 / ft ) * + Weigh of Rivet TO BE ASSUMED 6. Check for bending stress due to dead load and apply the check
