YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS

Larry Lancaster for the job. By: Mary Kollar, Market Foundation Volunteer Larry Lancaster and his wife Marge Levy take time this month of Memorial Day to reflect on their years of volunteer service assisting fundraising events for the Pike Place Market Foundation. Both are theoretically retired, Larry from Boeing, Marge from occupations affiliated with art, including Dean of the School of Art at the University of Michigan. They like to remember their first event, the Going Places Auction where they offered a couple of hours to blow up balloons or arrange auction donations. Then a last minute donation of a Segway arrived. Commandeered to demonstrate it, Larry wove skillfully through the hotel lobby and between tables, giving potential bidders driving lessons. A two-to-three hour volunteer shift grew to eight by the evenings end, and Larry was hooked.

If you want to run the raffle wheel at the Market Foundation Sunset Supper, you will have to fight

Over years of memorable volunteer opportunities, Sunset Supper remains Larry and Marges favorite event. It feels like were on vacation, Marge recalls from last summer. We take the bus down to the Market on a warm evening and stand on cobblestones for five hours without getting tired. We are part of a community of caring people sharing a common spirit with the restaurateurs and other volunteers, including many young people. Its a nice generational thing. Larry spins the raffle wheel so he interacts with hundreds of people caught up in the evenings energy. He admires Seattles generosity recalling one regular ticket holder who buys 25 tickets, winning ten big prizes and a man who drops $250 getting only consolations. Five tote bags later, Larry says, the man laughs and says, Its all for a good cause.

Marge always sees friends at Sunset Supper who stop by to greet her while she passes out prizes. Marge is also an active volunteer with SAMs Sculpture Park and Pottery Northwest, The art feeds my soul; the Market feeds my body. Larry and Marge say they are fortunate to live in their community, so giving back is fundamental. At Sunset Supper Marge relishes the chance to advocate for the Market Foundation. Many people buy tickets for the annual dinner thinking they are supporting the Pike Place Market where they shop and bring visitors. They are pleasantly surprised when Marge raises four fingers: Child Care, Senior Center, Food Bank, Clinic.

DONOR PROFILE
Real Networks Foundation
One year ago, Real Networks decided it would double its foundations giving to more than $1 million. This came after Real Networks staff watched the recession push community social needs through the roof and employees told management that community giving was important to them. It also came at a time when the company was experiencing losses and laying off staff. Still, the company decided to eat into its asset base to fund organizations that deliver basic human services and promote job creation and economic development. Real Networks funding decisions are made One lucky recipient of the expanded program is the Market Foundation, which received $10,000 in 2009. Those dollars were used to fund programs to help downtown Seattle workers with: Tuition assistance for 53 low-income families at the Markets Preschool at a rate they can afford, helping parents keep their jobs; We are grateful to have such a generous company as our neighbor. by a group of employees, two of whom visited the Market, learned our story, and spread their enthusiasm to others. In addition, Real Networks employees play key roles on three Market boardsthe Senior Center, Preschool and Market Foundation. The Senior Center served its 1,775 members more than 40,000 breakfasts and lunches. The Food Bank distributed a whopping 528,894 pounds of groceries to its 3,880 clients. Patients of the Clinic got more than medical carethey also made 2,238 visits to the ophthalmologist, the nutritionist and the diabetes educator. Groceries for 1,100 workers whose wages are so low that a Food Bank visit is needed to make ends meet. Lancaster and Levy are a couple with symbiotic enthusiasm. As they share their memories, they embellish each others stories, retrieving details the other failed to mention. Their work seems less a backward look and more a current commitment where todays work creates tomorrows memories. Volunteering offers Larry and Marge an opportunity to do something new. It gives energy and excitement to our lives without the burden of extended responsibility. They praise the Foundation staff and other volunteers who are organized for fundraising events. They know how to fit in other volunteers, identifying what personality is the right fit for a job. In all the excitement of Sunset Supper, auctions, or the home tourall events

Marge Levy for which Marge and Larry volunteer imagining the many recipients of the Foundations largesse cheers them. Marge Levy and Larry Lancaster appreciate their part in that community too, one that extends blocks from their Queen Anne Hill home to the cobblestones of the Pike Place Market where its residents live better lives for the joyful work of volunteers.

Care for the Market Luncheon

Bruce and Blake Nordstrom were in fine form as they addressed the guests at our annual luncheon in April. Bruce reflected on his earliest days in the Nordstrom stockroom, when his father paid him 25 cents an hour out of his own pocket because Bruce wasnt yet worthy of being put on the payroll. Blake talked about how important it was to the family to share their sense of community responsibility with their employees as the company grew. After a video presentation about the Markets human service agencies, guests donated a total of $144,000. We are deeply grateful to these donors and to our corporate sponsors: Holland America, Bruce and Jeannie Nordstrom, Red Lion Hotels, Riddell Williams, and Washington Holdings. We would also like to thank these corporate supporters: Botanical Designs, Clockwork Studios, Commerce Bank, Perkins Coie, Pike Place Market PDA, Seattles Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Sterling Savings Bank.
