Business Education at NUST


Business Studies and Economics programmes assume very high importance in understanding complex corporate environment and market dynamics. They equip business students with the necessary foundation to build their proficiencies in areas related to accounting and finance; marketing and human resource management; operations management and international business, as well as entrepreneurship. The courses under business study programmes at NUST Business School (NBS) provide hands-on experience to students to enable them to successfully pursue their careers or launch their own ventures. By virtue of their integrated structures, NBS business programmes generate a meaningful experience through inter-mingling of marketing and management; finance and strategy; entrepreneurship and technology, with adequate coverage of humanities.

Finance and Investments
The world of finance with its innumerable career opportunities is an attractive choice for many top calibre graduates. The main objective of this specialisation is to develop students financial acumen to the highest level. The programme provides flexible qualification suitable for a wide range of careers in the financial sector. The programme combines opportunities to gain specific knowledge and develop technical skills in international financial markets, investment, banking and finance, with the enhancement of management skills relevant to the financial services sector.

Operations and Technology Management


Operations Management is an area of business concerned with careful management of resources in an efficient and effective manner. It is concerned with managing the process that converts inputs (in the forms of materials, labour and energy) into outputs (in the form of goods and services). Operations management encompasses many fields, including Supply Chain Management, Quality and Productivity, Project Management, Industrial Engineering, Lean Manufacturing etc. One of the most effective ways to achieve competitiveness now-a-days is through streamlined and well-designed operations. Operations experts and managers are a sought-after resource. Typical job titles include Chief Operating Officer, Vice-President of Production, Inventory Manager, Logistics Manager, Project Manager, Procurement Officer, General Manager Supply Chain etc. Operations managers are involved at each step in providing a service or producing a product. They determine what equipment, labour, tools, facilities, materials, energy, and information should go into an enterprise system and how these inputs can best be obtained and used to satisfy the requirements of the marketplace. Managers are also responsible for critical activities such as quality management and control, capacity planning, materials management, purchasing and scheduling.

International Business and Marketing


This specialisation develops professional skills of people who intend to manage international markets with a global perspective. It covers all stages of corporate development in international trade from small businesses seeking export opportunities to multinational conglomerates. The specialisation has two features that distinguish it from many other MBA programmes because of global and national focus, and its coverage of numerous marketing techniques in international business environment. The specialisation also identifies how to develop, implement and execute branding strategies of an organisation. Key features also include multicultural international perspective with in-depth coverage of marketing spectrum.

Information Technology and E-commerce


Information Technology is for everyone who wants to exist and compete in this global village. Information Technology is no longer considered a luxury; rather its a vital tool for survival in the present economic and business scenario. At NUST Business School, we try to minimise the digital divide and facilitate the participants to adopt skills that can find them better ways to compete in current as well as future marketplaces. Courses like Management Information Systems, Database Management Systems, Electronic Commerce and Information Technology for Business help the participants to familiarise themselves with and effectively streamline their day-to-day operations, resources and communications. The core focus of all these activities is to minimise inputs, introduce accurate monitoring, effective decision-making, timely delivery and productivity maximisation both on individual and organisational levels. Special emphasis is placed on business scenarios and case studies; lessons can be learnt quickly within the classrooms rather than experimenting the same in the real world with a lot of resources at stake.

Human Resource Management


In todays competitive and highly dynamic environment, a business organisation must deal with several major challenges not only to sustain but also to grow and compete successfully. Traditionally, the concept of being competitive has been considered a function of finance, marketing or accounting. However, it is believed that proper management of human resources is crucial to the long-term value of a company and ultimately for its survival. The drive for growth and competition not only include financial profits but also employee growth and satisfaction, increased employment opportunities, protection of the environment and contribution towards community welfare programmes. The study of this specialisation focuses on all aspects of human resource management, including how companies interact with the environment, acquire, retain, prepare, develop and compensate human resources, as well as design and measure work which can help companies meet their competitive challenges and create value.

NUST Business School


NUST Institute of Management Sciences (NIMS) was established in 1999 to meet the increasing demand for skilled human capital in management sciences. It was entrusted with the task of training and educating a class of business leaders equipped with practical business skills in a broader intellectual and ethical framework to embrace the challenges and opportunities of an ever-changing marketplace. The School was named as NUST Business School (NBS) in 2008 with the renewed objective of providing high-quality education in management sciences. In less than a decade, it has made its mark as one of the premier business schools in Pakistan and a repository of quality human resource for the corporate sector. NUST Business School offers graduate and postgraduate programmes in Business Administration, Economics, Mass Communication and Government & Public Policy. Over a short span of ten years, NBS has emerged as the fastest growing school of business education in the country. It has top-of-the line faculty possessing sound teaching, research and industrial experience. It prides itself in its state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities. Since its inception, there has been a dramatic increase in its student intake which rose from the pioneering batch of 97 in 1999 to 959 in the year 2010. There has been ever-growing demand for NBS graduates in the industry. The competent and NUST Prospectus 2011

dedicated faculty is credited with establishing and maintaining enviable standards of education and research. Twelve of the faculty members have PhD degrees, while the rest have MPhil, MBA and MPA degrees from leading universities. Furthermore, five members of NBS faculty are currently on study leave for their doctoral studies under the faculty development programme. The School encourages the faculty and students to undertake research-oriented activities, such as writing research articles in refereed journals. NBS also brings out a research journal of its own titled, NUST Journal of Business and Economics. The School strongly believes in close interaction between academia and industry and every effort is made to bring the two closer through frequent liaison, joint field projects, research activities, workshops, seminars and lectures by industry experts. Students internships at leading organisations are facilitated through the placement and career development office at the school besides a similar set-up in the University. The Schools Centre for Industrial Linkages (CIL) also caters to enhancing the positive image of NBS and its students through interactive sessions with the corporate world. Given the dynamism and ability of its students and alumni as well as the untiring efforts of the faculty and staff, the School is well on its way to fulfilling its vision of becoming one of the best schools of business and economics in South Asia.

Prof Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan, Sitar-i-Imtiaz Principal and Dean


PhD (Johns Hopkins University) USA Prof Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan is the Principal, Dean at NBS. He earned his PhD degree in Economics from Johns Hopkins University, USA, and enjoys the distinction of being a student of the Nobel Laureate, Professor Lawrence R Klein. Dr Khan played a pivotal role in salvaging the economy of Pakistan as a key member of the governments economic team. He played an equally important role in setting up Debt Office, preparation of the Fiscal Responsibility and Debt Limitation Act passed by the Parliament in June 2005. As Consultant to Secretary General, SAARC, he prepared the Regional Study on Trade, Manufacture and Services, which laid the foundation for regional cooperation in South Asia. He is also the Director and Vice-Chairman of Saudi Pak Industrial and Agricultural Investment Company Ltd and the Director of United Bank Limited. Dr Khan has authored nine books and published more than 170 articles in national and international journals of economic science. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of economics and public policy, he was awarded Sitara-i-Imtiaz by the President.

Prof Dr Ather Maqsood Ahmed HoD Economics


PhD (Johns Hopkins University) USA Prof Dr Ather Maqsood Ahmed is the Head of Economics Faculty. Previously, he held several prestigious positions, including the posts of Member Fiscal Research and Statistics at the Federal Board of Revenue; Chief of Research at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics and Senior Research Scientist at Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. He did his Masters from University of Waterloo, Canada, and received his PhD in Economics from Johns Hopkins University, USA. Dr Ahmed has about 30 years of teaching and research experience in the fields of Macroeconomics, Fiscal Policy and Applied Econometrics. He has to his credit over 50 publications including books, reports, research papers and articles in his areas of specialisation. He is currently the editor of NUST Journal of Business and Economics. Formerly, he was the editor of FBR Quarterly Review and the co-editor of Pakistan Development Review. He is a member of Pakistan Society of Development Economists, Council of Social Scientists and Pakistan Economic Forum.

Mr Syed Haroon Rashid HoD Finance & Investments


MA (Kansas State University) USA Mr Syed Haroon Rashid is Head of Management Sciences and Finance faculty. He has over twenty years of experience in corporate finance and strategic management. He served as Advisor with the Investment Corporation of Pakistan, the first closed-end mutual fund in Pakistan. He was a part of a senior management team formed for the restructuring of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Ltd. He served as Head, Restructuring (Project Loans) as well as Head, Project Implementation Unit of the Asian Development Bank. He is a training consultant with the National Institute of Banking and Finance(State Bank of Pakistan).

Dr Masrur Alam Khan HoD Mass Communication & Marketing


PhD (University of the Philippines) Phillipines Postdoctorate (Southern Illinois University) USA Professor Dr Masrur Alam Khan is Head of the Department of Mass Communication. During his 40 years of teaching, professional and research career, he has established four departments within the country and abroad. He earned his PhD (Communication) from University of the Philippines and post doctorate from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, USA as a Fulbright-fellow. Dr Khan is the recipient of Best Teacher Awards for 2003-04, 2004-05 (Malaysia), and 2008-09 (Pakistan). He is also an award-winning researcher (ISO 9001-2000). He is an Associate Editor of International Journal of Inter-disciplinary Social Science, Australia (2007), International Journal of Humanities, Australia (2010) and is also a member of the editorial board for Journal of Educational Research, Islamabad and Journal of Agriculture Information, Lahore.

He has a unique fusion of knowledge and practical experience from corporate consulting, training and academic fields. His Consulting and Training profile is diverse and rich, ranging from multinationals to nongovernmental organisations. Finance and Investment
The need for finance graduates cannot be overlooked in the current global economic and financial slowdown. The need for finance graduates is foreseen to be even higher as companies pay more attention to the management of their financial resources and their risk management strategies. NBS offers specialisation in Finance and Investment, both at undergraduate (BBA Hons) and postgraduate (MBA, EMBA, MPhil and PhD) levels. Career options in finance are diverse and include Corporate Finance and Banking; Risk, Asset and Liability Management; Corporate and Derivatives Structuring; Private Equity, and Treasury Management and Hedge Fund Management. Finance specialisation from the School further enhances the career prospects of business graduates with the added chance of securing business placements that wellknown institutions in Pakistan are inclined to offer to NBS graduates. Business degree of NBS in Finance has already greatly helped our finance graduates to find jobs in top-notch financial and non-financial organisations in areas such as investment and securities brokerage houses, investment companies and retail and manufacturing firms. At NBS, students are taught a diverse range of finance and accounting courses which are essential for any organisation dealing with financial management as well as financial and managerial accounting, alon gwith more specialised areas including portfolio and investment management and securities and financial analysis. Given the impact of globalisation on all types of businesses and firms, these courses are conducted from both national and international perspectives. The School also offers courses in contemporary and emerging areas such as Corporate Governance, Financial Risk Management and Islamic Banking. These courses train our business graduates to work for leading multinational and national financial and nonfinancial companies. Business finance courses at NBS are structured in such a manner that, on completion of the degrees, the graduates are able to achieve a good measure of problem-solving, analyticalreasoning, interpersonal and decision-making skills along with acquiring quantitative aptitude and proficiency in the use of computers. A student looking forward to specialising in finance from NBS would thus need to be comfortable with numbers, have an eye for details and above all be hard working. NBS is one of the very few centres of excellence in Pakistan offering MPhil leading to PhD in Business Finance. This degree programme ideally trains students to join the ranks of nationbuilders by choosing to become teachers, academicians or experts in finance-related subjects with specific focus on modern research. It is only after meeting rigorous criteria that students are able to enter the research phase to write a thesis under the supervision of an approved supervisor.

International Business and Marketing


Marketing matters a great deal whether it be in choosing the tune of a glitzy cellular advertisement or conducting the consumer research behind the features of a credit card. Driven by the spirit to excel, the International Business and Marketing (IB&M) cluster at NBS goes beyond the classical theories and models in explaining contemporary business concepts by blending practical cases, lectures, and multi-model exercises in its teaching philosophy. Within its framework, IB&M is considered a recognised leader in Pakistan (an accolade appearing in www.Rozee.pk survey published in The News on July 5th, 2009). Enhancing corporate competitiveness and delivering superior customer value is the starting point for students. Through lectures, case studies (local and international) and classroom discussions, an environment of continuous learning and value addition is created. It is distinctly the analytical rigour and challenging thought processes that define the learning culture at IB&M. Over the last three years, the cluster has hosted three very important national seminars on the following themes:

Under its external lecture series, the department invites renowned guest speakers from the corporate sector. Talks were recently delivered by top professionals and leaders from Proctor & Gamble, Unilever, U-fone, Mobilink, Telenor, CocaCola, Pepsi, Nestle, Engro Foods, Askari Commercial Bank, United Bank Limited, Bank Al-Falah and Deutsche Bank. NBS faculty is known for conducting cutting-edge research that contributes a great deal to the academic understanding and practical learning of students. IB&M cluster has a team of 6 full-time faculty members with impressive academic credentials and global experience in consumer behaviour, market research, brand management, advertising, pricing, new product development, electronic marketing and international marketing.

Human Resource Management


Whether it is new technology implementation, organisational development, ethical decision-making, leading employees, managing diverse work teams, designing and implementing reward programmes or implementing change; it all involves one common factor, i.e., Human Resource. Experience shows that while all people have the capacity to learn, the structures in which they have to operate may not necessarily be conducive to reflection and engagement. Organisations seeking continual expansion in their capacity to build a dynamic future require bringing about a fundamental mind shift among their members. In a broad sense, we educate students that organisations are not mere objects; they are micro-societies. Those who lead them must understand the needs and motivations of people in them.

Not only do we expose them to the arguments of power, authority, conflict and culture, but we also equip them with the techniques of communication, persuasion and inspiration. We discuss groups, teams, their hierarchies and dynamics, together with strategy, its alignment with HR and the line of sight. The purpose is to expose the students to a broad continuum of highly empirical and quantifiable subjects like Compensation and Benefits on the one hand and highly abstract and postmodern topics like Conflict Management on the other. The modern employee is increasingly labelled as the knowledge worker. We live in an era where information becomes obsolete the moment it is generated. Technology and products operate in a cut-throat competitive environment, and even the social and economic conditions are in a constant state of flux. The only sustainable competitive advantage is therefore offered by Human Resource. The need to recruit the best people and to train and retain them in an extremely competitive industrial backdrop is both a big challenge and a top priority. Put simply, if we take care of our people, our people will take care of everything else. The realm of HR in Pakistan is led by multinationals that have brought in best practices from all over the world. The field is now becoming increasingly more important and applicable in national organisations and is making a fast headway into the SME sector as well. Job opportunities abound in HR administration, recruitment & selection, organisational development, performance management, training & development, compensation and benefits and strategic HR.

Learn at your own pace


Our EMBA programme is designed to offer flexible learning to busy professionals and entrepreneurs, suited to their personal and professional commitments. Classes take place in the evenings and on weekends. One can register in as many courses in a semester as one finds convenient and complete EMBA at a comfortable pace. In order to further enhance the range of options, the entrants can also elect to combine courses to earn a certificate or a postgraduate diploma.

Curriculum
Theories and concepts help best solve real world problems only when they are exemplified by practical corporate world insight. Our curriculum is built around the philosophy of equipping students to meet the rigorous needs of their organisations and making them peak performers. Programme Description
The BBA programme at NBS is structured to equip future managers with the basic tools and techniques of business management. Students can specialise in one of the two disciplines included in the programme. In the BBA (Hons) programme, specialisation is offered in International Business & Marketing and Finance & Investment.

Unique Features
The BBA programme is exclusive in its own right. It is highly focused on the theoretical and practical aspects of the coursework and offers invaluable learning opportunities through class projects, field assignments and strong linkages with various organisations. NBS has a process in place to incorporate constant updates in the curriculum in light of growing needs of the industry. Students are required to undergo an internship of 6 to 8 weeks in their respective areas of specialisation.

After successful completion of 136 credits of BBA (Hons) degree, students have a wide range of career and academic choices. Upon their graduation, many of our BBA students have been able to secure jobs at renowned companies. We have an in-house Centre for Industrial Linkages that takes care of student placement upon completion of their degrees. At NUST Business School, our curriculum is constantly updated by incorporating emerging market trends to meet the evolving needs of industry. A salary survey of industry professionals and corporate employees to reveal career trends by a popular on-line job website, www.Rozee.pk, showed that business-related professions were becoming more popular than computer science, engineering and telecom. Marketing and Brand Management came in at the top, followed by Procurement and Supply Chain (second), Sales and Business Development (fourth), Human Resource Management (sixth), and Finance and Accounting (eighth). The survey has also shown the growing importance of business education in the fields of engineering and software development. This also highlights the important role that business professionals are playing in both hi-tech and consumer goods industry. After completing their undergraduate degree, some students may also start an MBA programme at any university around the globe in the same or any other specialisation. Students doing MBA programme at NBS are given credit for some of the modules covered in BBA, to enable them to complete the coursework in one year, followed by a research thesis and an internship.

NBS Wins The Procter & Gamble University Challenge me


P&G hosted the second edition of P&G University Challenge at NBS from 30th Oct to 1st Nov 2010. The Business Launch Competition was the main event which ran for all three days. Fifty-six teams from all major universities of Punjab and Khyber Pukhtunkhwa participated in the Business Launch Competition. These universities included NUST, LUMS, LSE, GIKI, UET Lahore, Bahria, Kinnaird College, Air University, FAST, GC Lahore, MAJU, IQRA, etc. In Business Launch Competition, top 5 teams made it to the last round. Out of these 5 teams, there were 3 teams from NBS and 2 from LUMS. The final round was judged by the Country Managers Customer and Business Development, HR Manager for Asia Pacific and Pakistan, Brand Manager Ariel and Brand Manager Safeguard. A team from NBS won the competition and was awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000, thus, throwing light on the fact that NUST has students with immense potential to perform at any level.

NBS offers a course-based MPhil leading to PhD programme in Business Administration to meet the challenges of the business world and the growing demand for well-qualified and research-oriented teaching faculty in Pakistan. NBS provides affordable high-quality research opportunities of international standards in Pakistan. It is amongst the leading pioneers to embark on MPhil leading to PhD programme in Business Administration. This programme has been carefully designed in response to the traditional and emerging trends and to meet the growing market demand for various specialist areas in business administration. Most of the PhD faculty is either qualified from reputed international universities or have worked there as research fellows. Currently, NBS has three PhD faculty members in Economics, two in Finance and one each in Human Resources and Information Technology. Five of the faculty members have gone abroad for PhD studies.

Structure of the Programme


The students must complete four core courses (12 credits) and six specialisation courses (18 credits) from one of the specialisation areas (Business Finance, Management, and Marketing) at the MPhil level. Following the successful completion of the 30 credit hours of coursework and passing the subject comprehensive exam, the students are transferred to the PhD programme. In case a student does not pass the subject comprehensive exam, he/she is then required to submit an MPhil level dissertation worth 6 credit hours. At the PhD level, the students further undertake three compulsory courses (9 credits) and three specialisation courses (9 credits) from their chosen specialisation areas. After successfully completing 48 credit hours of coursework (30 at the MPhil and 18 at the PhD level), students must pass the two comprehensive examinations consisting of the themes/topics related to the core/compulsory courses and specialisation courses. Students can then move on to work on their PhD dissertations worth 30 credit hours. The minimum time period to complete MPhil (PhD) is 2-3 years whereas the maximum is 4-6 years. NBS offers scholarships to a few MPhil/PhD students, selected purely on merit. In addition, students are strongly encouraged and facilitated not only to apply for foreign scholarships but also go abroad for a minimum period of six months to gain research experience in technologically advanced countries.

A student must have a minimum of two research papers published or read at conferences of international repute (of which at least one paper must be published in an HEC-approved journal) before the PhD defence. Economics is a motivating and rewarding field of study which helps explain how individuals, businesses and governments distribute limited resources. It is the discipline that analyses choices and incentives to attain the best solutions to the problems arising from the constraints imposed by limited resources. The study of Economics helps students better understand the world in which they live, including issues related to economic growth, levels of employment, inflation, international trade, globalisation, taxation, and finance as well as providing insight into the consequences of alternative economic policies. The Economics programme offered at NBS is unique because it takes into account areas that are related to public economics, issues faced by Pakistan economy at the aggregate level and the analysis of domestic industrial structure. This programme focuses on the indigenisation of basic theoretical and applied concepts of economics specifically in the context of Pakistans political economy and culture. Courses Offered in Economics Programme


Currently Pakistan is facing myriads of economic challenges and the country has to go a long way in creating a stable and growth-oriented macroeconomic environment. The nation urgently needs well-qualified economists, equipped with theoretical understanding, application of concepts, quantitative analytical tools and professionalism. To fill this void, NBS has launched its Economics programme, offering both BS and MS degrees enrolling people from both economic and non-economic backgrounds under different streams. Some important areas of the discipline are highlighted below:

urbanisation, employment generation, empowerment of local communities, strengthening the institutions and government framework are also part of the programmes.

Mathematical Economics
This course will familiarise students with the basics of matrix algebra and tools of optimisation. Optimisation is used frequently for equilibrium in microeconomic models in mainstream economics. Before studying these models, the students will be taught techniques related to finding derivatives and differentials and how optimisation works under different conditions. These tools will facilitate our understanding of comparative statistics and optimisation, as used in models of microeconomics and related fields like industrial organisation and development. These models form the backbone of intermediate level micro fields.

Microeconomics
Topics covered in microeconomics will include: supply and demand; consumer theory; the theory of the firm under perfect competition, monopoly and other market structures; factor markets; and market failure. Students will apply microeconomic tools to the analysis of such controversial issues as minimum wage laws, farm subsidies, rent controls, protectionism, pollution, welfare programmes, and the trade-off between equity and efficiency that results from various microeconomic policies. The successful completion of this course should allow students to better understand and participate in contemporary policy debates concerning the roles of the government and the market.

Monetary Economics
This course covers the following areas; nature and functions of money, classical monetary theory, neutrality and the welfare costs of inflation, modern theories of the demand for money, portfolio models and the term structure of interest rates, the banking system, financial intermediation and the determinants of the money supply, the transmission mechanism of monetary policy, the theory and practice of monetary policy and the design of monetary policy in closed and open economies, the choice of central banking institutions in the context of monetary policy design and the relationship between monetary policy and federal government deficits.

Macroeconomics

This introductory course to Macroeconomics includes: the flow of national income, measurement of output, income, personal and disposable incomes, real versus nominal gross domestic product, the long-run analysis, aggregate demand and aggregate supply and price level, equilibrium level of output and employment, determinants of level of output and employment in an economy, introduction to business cycles, inflation, causes and different types of inflation, economic growth and development, the role of money and banking, monetary and fiscal policies; interest rate, open market economy, imports and exports in a simple economic model, exchange rate and international monetary system.

Public Finance
The topics include introduction to public bureaucracy in theory and practice; policy promotion; the institutions and processes of political governance; administrative governance; the challenge of policy implementation; the role and influence of non-state actors in policy-making and administrative governance; social diversity and the question of difference in policy-making and administrative governance; paradigms of governance; and policy-making and administrative governance.

Econometrics
This course introduces students to the introductory topics of econometrics including: regression, multiple regression analysis, estimation and inference, multicollinearity, generalised least-squares, hetroskedasticity, autocorrelation, model specification, and dummy dependent variables and their models; Probit, Logitand Tobit models; Time Series Analysis and its models like ARMA, ARIMA etc. Students are also introduced to the use of standard PC-based econometric software.

Labour Economics
This course will focus on an economic analysis of the labour market, the labour force, and workers, wages and earnings. Topics include supply, development, and efficient use of human resources; the demand for labour by businesses and industries; wage inequality and its determinants; the changing occupational and industrial structure; causes, nature, and incidence of unemployment; the economic impact of unions; and the influence of related labour market institutions and relevant public policies including minimum wages, wage subsidies, and earned income tax credits.

Economics of Pakistan
The objective of this course is to address the management and planning issues particularly with reference to Pakistan. It will cover the application of new resources to attack the root causes of social problems such as lack of education, healthcare, family planning and water supply. The course will teach the students how proper management can address many economic problems in different fields of the economy including agriculture and industry. Various contemporary issues such as

International Trade and Policy


This course will develop an analytical framework for studying international trade to answer questions such as, Why do nations trade? and to examine policies that governments adopt toward international trade. Finally, we take up globalisation its consequences for different types of labour.

The economics undergraduate curriculum equips students with an understanding of basic microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic growth and the impact of fiscal and monetary policies. Students can build on this foundation by taking a variety of elective courses of international standards.

Development of Critical Thinking Skills The programme aims at developing critical thinking skills through application of economic theories to real world economic problems and issues. It is designed to help students understand how individuals and institutions interact to generate outcomes for the economy as a whole. Development of Quantitative Skills The curriculum introduces students to different quantitative tools and techniques to conduct data analysis using applicable statistical packages.

Research

The coursework exposes young economists to current economic issues and trains them to undertake research. Final year BS Economics students are encouraged to participate in doctoral seminars.

Associated Careers

The programme provides students with a meaningful educational experience. It prepares them for employment in a wide variety of occupations and for further studies in economics, business law and related fields in schools across the world. Economists can work as advisors to government and public sector organisations, industry, businesses, commercial institutions or investors. They research, analyse and interpret information about economic performance, tax and political decisions according to both national and international economic situations. They seek to determine the implications of their findings and forecast economic changes. They also analyse and solve complex problems by the application of economic analysis tools. Economists are also employed in the banking sector, management and economic consultancies, World Bank, United Nations, trade unions, political parties and other organisations.

The degree provides professional training in modern economics, including tools and techniques of economic analysis and relates theory to real world practices. Through this programme, we create a research-led environment where students work alongside leading researchers to develop the skills required to become professional economists, or conduct further research as PhD students and become analysts on some other career path.

Research
Special emphasis is laid on engaging students and faculty in research. Every student completing his/her coursework has to write a research paper (thesis) in the final semester which is equivalent to two courses of 3 credit hours each. Only in exceptional cases, thesis will be replaced by coursework.

The country needs well-qualified professionals who are equipped with theoretical understanding, application of concepts, quantitative analytical tools and professionalism. The MS-Economics programme at NBS aims at producing professional economists for the government sector, private/international organisations and for business. Postgraduate students in economics will be prepared to work in policy-making institutions and would be able to devise deregulation of industries, the effects of tax cuts on budget deficit and the effectiveness of imposing tariffs on imported goods.

We are living in an age of information explosion where technology has revolutionised information handling; where we can use, preserve and convey any amount of data, anywhere in the world. This, in turn, is fundamentally re-shaping major aspects of our globalised society. Today, information and its communication is becoming the centre of economic activity and as much a factor in production as capital, labour or land. Hence, it is inevitable to train our youth for the challenges of the information age in order to survive and develop. The Department of Mass Communication, encompasses a wide variety of disciplines, starting from the basic perspectives of the field of Mass Media and Communication, moving on to explore each area of the discipline through broad exposure to the industry and practical assignments along with added emphasis on media research methods. The focus is on analytical and historical perspectives. The programme develops in students the ability to assess the roles and effects of mass media on society and life, and specific media production skills through extensive practical work. The programme starts by developing a fundamental understanding of the subject in students by teaching them about the history, values and structure of mass communication in Pakistan and abroad. Students are then trained to analyse the effects of electronic and print media in order to enable them to analyse media effects on public policy, as well as the impact of public policy on the media. In addition to the core courses, students must take some approved media methods/ research courses in social sciences and a number of electives offered in other disciplines such as Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Linguistics and Journalism.

Electronic Media students will use professional digital camcorders and work in broadcast studios. Advertising and Public Relations


Students of Advertising and Public Relations will get an opportunity to satisfy their passion about the art and science of strategic communication. With the help of a faculty that possesses extensive knowledge, students will develop the ability to create communication campaigns in disseminating innovative concepts and devise methods for the solution of advertising and public relations problems. Students will have multi-media rooms with the latest room platform, recording and playback facilities.

Media Management
Media Management will provide an opportunity to the students to tackle the complexities of management through communication skills. Media management is both challenging and exciting. It is challenging because organisations are becoming much more complex, and many new forces confront the manager. The contemporary manager has a greater opportunity than ever to make a significant difference in the success of the organisation and improve the quality of work and life of colleagues and fellow employees.

Communication Theory and Research


The specialisation focuses on both theoretical as well as practical application of concepts by incorporating relevant courses such as Theories of Influence on Mass Media. Advances in Mass Communication theory and research are the highlights of this field of study. Communication research is augmented by case studies. In addition, students are also exposed to the foundations of Behavioural Research.

Programme Description
BS-Mass Communication programme focuses on the study of social implications and responsibilities of the mass media, and understanding of the processes of communication and a fundamental knowledge of mass communication techniques and procedures. Department of Government and Public Policy


The idea of establishing a Department of Government and Public Policy was envisaged keeping in view Pakistans long struggle with governance issues and lack of dedicated institution that could be the breeding ground for producing civil servants. This department aims at producing graduates of the highest quality who could play a decisive role in public, private and non-profit institutions, not only within Pakistan but also around the world. The Department of Government and Public Policy made a debut in 2010 with Bachelor of Public Administration. Coming to grips with the problems that infect Pakistan is indeed a tall order, but it must be noted that NUST has a history of establishing educational institutions par excellence. We are confident that the Department of Government and Public Policy will prove equal to the challenge. The strength of our current faculty and their linkages in the public and private sector, expose our students to an array of ideas, experiences and thoughts from those who have worked in the highest echelons of government, as well as the private sector. We believe that bringing Pakistans best and the brightest, former and current, civil servants to interact with our students will not only help them gain an insight into the dynamics of Public Administration but also allow for a creation of a very valuable human resource. BS Public Administration
Bachelors in Public Administration at NUST is being introduced keeping in view the unique challenges that Pakistan faces, in terms of good governance, management and leadership.

Unique Features

The programme is one of its kind, and is amongst the select few being offered in Pakistan. This programme focuses on the issues that beset Pakistan in the public sector, and aims at providing a feasible solution in terms of having a stream of public servants, who could lead the country on the path towards development and progress.

Associated Careers

This programme provides aspiring civil servants a solid foundation through which they appear in the highly competitive Central Superior Services (CSS) examinations. After successful completion of 130 credits of BS Public Administration programme, students have a choice and requisite eligibility of appearing in the CSS examinations. This programme also allows them to join the corporate sector, in segments that often need to interact with the government, as these graduates have been suitably trained in the same through this degree. Students, after the completion of their BS Public Administration programme, could also go on to pursue postgraduate degrees in Public Administration. This may lead them to, amongst other paths, a research track from where they could contribute in terms of adding knowledge to the current practices in Public Administration.

Research and Development


NUST Public Policy Research Centre (NPPRC), a centre of excellence in its own right, is a constituent body of NUST Business School. The Centre works for the progress and development of academic research at NBS, and is instrumental in strengthening its policy relevance in order to bridge the apparent gap between the two. NPPRC is an independent research and education-cum-training centre engaged in conducting high quality theoretical and empirical research to shape public policy by integrating knowledge and methods across the management and social science disciplines. It knits academic researchers, planners and implementers in public and private sectors. Besides research, the researchers at NPPRC are also skilled in areas such as development of performance indicators for monitoring and evaluation, networking and leveraging, preparing training modules and serving as master trainers on various aspects of public policy issues.

Independent and Collaborative Research


Independent and joint research is highly rewarding for an academic institution. Apart from inculcating a wholesome competitive spirit in the faculty, NPPRC provides NBS faculty and students the much needed forum for presentation and peer review of their independent research findings.

Collaborative Research

Collaborative research between institutions requires a forum for the researchers to interact with one another. Such interaction was long envisaged between NBS faculty and the staff of wide-ranging public, private or multilateral institutions. NPPRC now takes care of this need by providing the required base for cooperating and coordinating with external stakeholders.

Education and Training


To develop their human capital, many public and private sector organisations impart training and re-training to their employees. To achieve better output, the importance of networking and leveraging cannot be overemphasised. One of the objectives of NPPRC is to develop standard and custom-made courses for its collaborating partners and afford NBS faculty opportunities to groom themselves into highly sought-after resource persons, capable of adding value to the organisation. NPPRC and Pakistan Institute of Trade and Development (PITAD) are the two leading partners in this process. NBS is credited with preparing not only the training module on Pakistan Economy for the participants from Commerce and Trade Group, but also for the successful delivery of an 18module course to the participants during November 2008 and June 2009. The second undertaking started in November 2009.

Fact file
Students from NUST Business School won the countrylevel 3rd Annual Global Investment Research Competition held in Karachi and represented Pakistan in the regional contest held in Bali, Indonesia where they competed with teams from 18 Asian countries including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Singapore, etc and were placed among the top 6 teams.

Publications
With similar zeal, NPPRC is pursuing the publication of research activities. The first two volumes of NUST Journal of Business and Economics (NJBE) have already been published and disseminated. NJBE is a refereed journal complying with HEC guidelines. The suitability of the submitted article for publication is determined after the clearance of its contents through anti-plagiarism software, and is subject to the recommendation of two referees. The third volume of NJBE is currently being prepared and is expected to come out shortly.

Student Support Facilities


There are two dedicated modern computer labs used by NBS students for their academic and research work. The teaching lab is equipped with audio/video equipment for conducting classes. Both labs have round-the-clock broadband internet and printing facilities. NBS subscribes to various online business, research and academic journals to help students with their research work.

Library

To facilitate students, faculty and scholars in knowledge acquisition and creation, an information resource centre has been established with a view to enhancing the knowledge database. The information resource centre has books on various disciplines including Economics, Human Resource Management, International Business and Marketing, Operations and Technology Management, Information Technology and E-commerce. NBS Information Resource Centre is well stocked with professional books and journals. An exclusive JSTOR- an online archive database with over 500 high-quality publications- is also available to students and faculty members covering Management, Economics, Marketing and Finance. Moreover, Springer Link and Science Direct provide comprehensive collection of peer-reviewed management journals. The library contains a large variety of publications, periodicals, business magazines, annual reports, yearbooks, proceedings

and newspapers. Additionally, the library boasts a collection of about 24,000 e-books. The support services for students at the library include assistance in searching resources and obtaining complete information regarding publications, along with scanning, printing and photocopying facilities.

NUST Model United Nations (NUMUN) 2010e


NUST Business School, in collaboration with NISI, organized the first ever intraNUST Model United Nations from 3rd to 5th December 2010. A total of 30 delegations, each comprising 4 delegates, participated in the competition and 8 delegates represented the NUST constituent Colleges. The competition was based on United Nations model whereby all delegates were required to present a case study which was debated by the delegates on the lines of UN debate. The competition tested students communication and analytical skills, knowledge of international affairs and interpersonal skills. Students practiced the art of negotiating, consensus-building, public speaking and research skills. The MCS team bagged maximum number of prizes. Besides other honourable mentions, Best Delegate & Best Diplomacy Award for USA was won by Asad Mahmood (TE 47) and Shorahbeel bin Zahoor (BESE 15) and Best Delegate & Best Diplomacy Award for Germany was won by Ahmed Mujtaba Hashmi (TE 44). The aim of the conference was to develop and train a nation of knowledgeable individuals who are truly equipped to handle the responsibility of taking this world forward as the future leaders. NUMUN consisted of social events which included a movie night, bonfire/BBQ night and a global ramp. They were well attended and greatly enjoyed by the delegates. NUMUN acted as an educational tool for the students of NUST about the UN and current international issues. The success of the event can be attributed to the brilliant minds that are fostered at NUST, and such conferences will continue to enlighten participants in the future as well.

CIL aims at bridging the gap between the academia and the corporate world. The centre aims at building relationship between the graduates and the corporate sector, which in turn will help students in the practical world of industry, and the corporate sector. The corporate Companies are built on well-developed networks which produce measurable business results such as faster learning, quicker response to needs, better problem solving, new ideas and innovations. CIL will ensure all of the above and act as a coordinating link between students and the corporate companies. CIL core functioning includes arranging internships and placements for student offering lucrative investment opportunities to companies in the new campus. Apart from the above, CIL is focusing on establishing long-term relations with the industry and in this connection industrial visits and guest speakers from the corporate world are regularly arranged at NBS. In the year 2010, CIL has had the following progress:

Mentorship
CIL joined hands with Career Pakistan and arranged mentorship from the industry to guide students on challenges being faced in industry. More than 60 students got advantage out of this. Apart from this, CIL joined hands with Chamber of Commerce of Rawalpindi & Islamabad in engaging students in practical research projects of the industry.

Seminars
CIL arranged a number of seminars for the students out of which Seminars by Senator Mushaid Hussain Syed, Mr Riaz Khokhar (Ambassador and former Foreign Secretary), Mr Javed Jabbar (former Information Minister) and Syed Kamal Shah (Ex Interior Secretary) are important mentions. Guest Speakers are a common feature at NBS under the framework of CIL. We keep industry involved with this activity in order to get real life examples and experiences. Newsletter of NBS activities was published displaying a complete round-up of the activities during 2010. CIL has played a pivotal role in establishing a strong relationship by getting into MOUs with Rawalpindi & Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Pakistan Microfinance Network (PMN).

Internship
CIL arranged 135 internships for the students in all the leading corporate sectors.

Job Placement
This is a continuous process for students at NBS and importantly CIL has included the pool of alumni also in this sector.

Dr Ather M Ahmed presented Pakistans Taxation Structure at the National College of Management,Lahore. Dr Masrur A Khan spoke about Electronic Media and Interpersonal Discourse: Mediation in Crisis. Mr Tanweer ul Islam made a presentation on Basic Econometrics at NUST Business School. Dr Raheel Gohar conducted an online workshop on Venture Capital & Private Equity in the Asia Pacific Region organised by Asian Finance Association & University of South Wales. Dr Naila Ayub and Dr Hina Kalyal conducted a seminar under the auspices of NUST Public Policy Research Centre. Mr Ather Hameed Butt conducted a workshop on Stress Management at NUST Business School. Mr Ather Hameed Butt and Dr Awais Siraj conducted the 2nd Junior Command Course for Punjab Police at NUST Business School. Mr Kamran Khalid held a PMP workshop at NUST Business School.

A talk by Dr Magnus Sverke of Stockholm University on a diverse range of topics in Social Sciences organised by NUST Public Policy Research Centre(NPPRC). Senator Mushahid Hussain Syed and Ex-Foreign Secretary of Pakistan Mr Riaz Khokhar spoke about Pakistans Geo-Strategic Challenges and Response to celebrate the Pakistan Day. Former Information Minister Mr Javed Jabbar and ExSecretary Interior, Mr Syed Kamal Shah delivered a talk on Pakistans Internal Dynamics.
