lar in gyms across the country
and even at many workplaces
as a substitute for a desk chair.
The ball is a great tool for
building the core muscles such
as abs, back and hips, which
help promote overall stabiliza-
tion of the body.
4. Comfortable yoga mat.
Lying on the floor during a
workout can feel uncomfort-
able, but a good mat can make
all the difference. A good yoga
mat can cushion the hard sur-
face of a tile or wood floor and
protect a carpet from extra
wear and tear. Most mats are
thin but offer excellent
padding and grip; they wont

Home Furnace
You've probably been hearing
the talk of federal light bulb reg-
ulations for years, but in 2012,
the talk will become reality, and
these regulations will begin to
take effect. While California res-
idents began the transition in
January 2011, the federally
mandated phase-out of less effi-
cient incandescent light bulbs
began with the 100-watt light
bulb on Jan. 1, 2012, so now is
the time for the rest of the coun-
try to make the switch.
Before you begin considering
your options, heres a quick
review of how the new regula-
tions will work:
Incandescent, or traditional,
100-watt light bulbs for general
purpose, household shape lamps
will no longer be available in
stores beginning January 2012.
Retailers will be able to sell-
through any existing inventory,
but the traditional 100-watt
incandescent bulbs will not be
replaced on the shelf.
Incandescent 75-watt light
bulbs will be unavailable in
2013.
Incandescent 40-watt and
60-watt light bulbs will be
phased out in 2014.
As these rules phase in gradu-
ally, its a great time to educate
yourself on the different types of
energy-efficient light bulbs
available.
This year marks the begin-
ning of new light bulb regu-
lations phasing out

Learning about lumens.
The lingo used to describe the
brightness of light bulbs is
changing. Were accustomed to
identifying the brightness of a
light bulb by the amount of
power watts that it uses.
However, more efficient light
bulbs emit the same amount of
light measured in lumens-
while using less electricity.
For example, the following
light bulbs all produce roughly
the same amount of light (450
lumens): 40-watt incandescent,
29-watt halogen, 11-watt com-
pact fluorescent (CFL) and 9-
watt LED. Its still important to
pay attention to wattage to make
sure you dont exceed the rec-
ommended level for your lamp.
Types of bulbs available. As
you move on from incandescent
bulbs, youll want to familiarize
yourself with the different types
of more energy-efficient bulbs
available.
Compact fluorescent: CFL
bulbs are more expensive than
incandescent bulbs, but use up

to 75 percent less energy and
last up to 10 times as long. You
can save up to $70 per year by
placing CFLs in your five most
commonly used lamps, accord-
ing to the Environmental
Protection Agency. Youve like-
ly seen them in spiral or tube-
like shapes, but CFLs also come
in the A-line form common in
most incandescent bulbs.
Halogen: These bulbs use the
same technology as incandes-
cent bulbs but last up to three
times longer and are about 50
percent more efficient.
Halogens are known for produc-
ing the highest quality light but
arent as efficient as CFLs.
When changing halogens, youll
want to make sure you use a rag
because oil from your skin can
reduce the bulbs longevity.
LED: Lowes began offering
the industrys first Energy Star-
qualified LED bulb this year
the GE Energy Smart 9-watt
LED. LED bulbs take the effi-
ciency and durability of CFLs
even further, as this bulb is rated
to last more than 22 years and
uses slightly less energy than a
CFL bulb.

Red bell peppers are simply
green bell peppers that have
been left on the vine to continue
to ripen. The long vine-ripening
time increases the amount of
vitamin C in the peppers.
Adding cannelloni beans to the
soup recipe below provides it
with a creamy texture and
boosts the vitamins, minerals,
antioxidants, fiber, protein and
iron in the dish.
Roasted Red Bell Pepper
Soup
Ingredients
1 (15 ounce) jar of water-
packed, roasted bell peppers,
or 3 fresh bell peppers, roast-
ed and peeled (see Tips
below)
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 tablespoon minced garlic
2 tablespoons Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black
pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon sugar
2 (15 ounce) cans cannelloni
beans, drained and rinsed
2 (14.5 ounce) cans low-sodium
chicken broth
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Instructions
1. Drain the jar of bell pep-
pers. In a large pot, heat the oil
over medium heat. Saute the
onion and garlic in the oil for 5
minutes, or until the onion is
translucent. Add the roasted red
bell peppers, Italian seasoning,
salt, pepper, cayenne pepper and
sugar. Saute for 2 to 3 minutes.
2. Place vegetables and the
beans in a blender or food
processor and puree. Add one
can chicken broth. Puree the
soup until smooth and return it
to the pot. Stir in remaining can
of chicken broth until mixture is
smooth. Heat 5 to 7 minutes.
Stir in lemon juice. Soup can be
eaten hot or cold or used as a
sauce for meats or vegetables.
Tips for roasting fresh bell
peppers: Preheat oven to broil.
Place bell peppers on a baking
sheet and broil on ovens top
rack, using tongs to turn them as
each side blackens. Place black-
ened peppers in a paper bag,
close tightly and allow to cool
for 20 to 30 minutes. Peel off
skin by rubbing peppers with
paper towels. Do not rinse pep-
pers. Discard stems and all
seeds, and slice the peppers.

Ideally, you should have a
professional check your gas
heating system once a year to
make sure everything is work-
ing properly. Like any machin-
ery, gas furnaces have moving
parts, inlet valves and other
things that can and will break
down eventually. Dirt can
build up in the furnace system,
and moisture from various
sources also can cause prob-
lems. A heating professional
will be able to check systems
like the blower motor and
exhaust stack, electrical con-
nections and other areas that
are not safe or practical for
many homeowners to tackle.
There are some mainte-
nance tasks you can do your-
self that will help keep the pro-
fessionals visit cost-effective.
The single most important
thing you can do is change the
filter every month that the fur-
nace is in operation. This min-
imizes the amount of dust that
enters the furnace itself and
keeps it from clogging up the
works and reducing heating
efficiency. Keeping the room
that the furnace is in free of
clutter and dust is another way
to maintain the unit.
Check to make sure the
pilot light is burning properly
and at the right height. (Your
manufacturers manual should
specify this, but if it doesnt,
most pilot lights burn at about
an inch in height, with a
bright-blue hue at the top of
the flame.) You also might be
able to inspect the burners,
which when operating also
should have clear flames with
a bright blue hue.
Inspect the furnace and all
visible ductwork for signs of
damage or corrosion twice a
year. If you see any issues with
the furnace, the burners or the
pilot light, or if other problems
occur, such as the furnace trip-
ping the circuit breaker, con-
tact a professional right away.

Today prices of oil-based syn-
thetic materials created to mimic
granite have risen, while the
price of natural granite has
dropped due to increased pro-
duction overseas. Granite now is
actually less expensive than syn-
thetic counter top materials.
Nicole: Only natural granite
has the beauty and durability
that people really desire for their
homes. A synthetic product will
never look as good as the real
thing and it doesnt have the
durability of natural granite.

out scratching and a hot pan
from the stove without damage.
Under normal kitchen condi-
tions it is stain-, scratch-, chip-

There was even a miniature
waterfall when I was there.
Cool Weather Trip. All
this makes for a fascinating
afternoon of exploring. I
would suggest visiting the
canyon before the weather
gets too hot. If hiking, wear
good shoes for the terrain is
uneven and sometimes sandy.
Bring water. My own recom-
mendation is a daypack with
a two- or three-liter water
bladder. Horseback riding
is another possibility. See

get, Socorro is 20 miles south
of the canyon, with all its
restaurants, motels, and plenty
of attractions of its own.
Getting There. From the
north take Exit 163 (San
Acacia) and follow the
frontage road south for 2.3
miles. Turn right and go
through the tunnel under the
freeway. The canyon is anoth-
er 4 miles. From the south,
take Exit 158 (Lemitar) and
travel the frontage road north
for 4.6 miles. Then turn left
through the tunnel. The road is
gravel but well maintained.
Eventually youll find yourself
driving up a dry braided
stream bed. The BLM recom-
mends a 4WD vehicle for the
last two miles.

Canyon on a strip of paper,
fold it up, and put it in that lit-
tle tin box of yours marked
Hidden Treasures. This gem
of an adventure lies between
Belen and Socorro, but youll
never find it by looking for
road signs for there are none.
None, that is, until you have
already found it. And maybe
thats what makes it so perfect
only explorers can find it...
and only explorers belong
there.
Sliced Bread. San Lorenzo
Canyon consists of large rock
faces, gigantic formations,
caves, slot canyons, chimneys,
towers, hoodoos and other
geologic wonders that line
both sides of a dry creek bed.
The geology here is as com-
plex as it is picturesque, show-
ing the results of tectonic plate
movement, erosion and vol-
canic intrusion. The mouth of
the canyon is guarded by a
huge mesa-like formation that
looks a lot like a large loaf of
sliced bread. Called an angu-
lar unconformity, it features

by a horizontal cap.
It was possible for me to
drive through the canyon right
up to where a rock wall blocked
the way. Scrambling up and

your own hopscotch game
everyone can play indoors using
sample carpet squares. If you
live near a carpet store, ask for
discarded sample squares,
which are usually free of charge.
Choose samples that are approx-
imately 10 inches by 12 inches
in a variety of fun, playful col-
ors. Youll need at least 10 for a
standard game of hopscotch.
When you get home, cut rub-
ber shelf liner the size of the car-
pet squares. Glue the shelf-liner
pieces onto the backsides of the
carpet squares to help keep the
squares from slipping.
Paint the numbers 1 through
10 on the tops of the squares
using acrylic or latex paints.
When dry, grab some flat stones
for markers, and the kids will be
ready and eager to play. Or,
while the kids are waiting for the
paint to dry, they can make their
own personalized game mark-
ers. Cut out school pictures of
each child who is going to play
hopscotch, and glue the photos
onto one side of a flat frozen-
orange-juice lid with smooth
sides. When its time to play,
toss it face up onto a square.
To play, set the squares on
the floor in a hopscotch pattern,
and hop away! Or invent your
own games and encourage your
kids to practice their numbers
while they play. Join in with the
kids and enjoy one of the oldest
and simplest childrens games
around. When the game is over,
clean up is a snap.

Most designers will tell you
that too much shade is a prob-
lem when designing a land-
scape. Although many plants
grow well in very light shade,
most plants cant take heavy
shade. To make the problem
worse is the fact that most
shade plants dont produce as
much color as most gardeners
want. The following is a list of
plants that can do well in this
challenging situation, and sev-
eral will give you color, too.
Shrubs
Acuba. Tropical-looking
evergreen that can take dense
shade.
Boxwood. Formal ever-
green if trimmed, but makes a

With public attention turn-
ing more and more to the
problem of obesity in
America, the pressure is on
for people to find ways to
successfully lose weight.
Even television shows are
dedicated to the subject
(NBCs The Biggest Loser
comes to mind), indicating
that, for many people, the
desire to change is there. Yet
in order to make the transi-
tion, people must go through
difficult lifestyle changes,
such as exercise, and often
costly challenging eating
plans. The lingering question
is, how does one lose and
keep off weight without feel-
ing incredibly overwhelmed?
According to Dr. Marji
Prefontaine, who has a doc-
torate in marriage and family
counseling, in order to suc-
cessfully lose weight and
keep it off, there must be a

Alzheimers wards. It is not
uncommon to meet a
patient who seems to just
not be there. Sometimes
when I help restore their

Q: Is it reasonable to plant
lawn grass seeds now?
A: In our area, it is still a bit
early to plant lawn grasses.
You can plant cool-season
grasses such as Kentucky
bluegrass, tall fescue and
Texas bluegrass later in
March. The cool-season grass-
es will germinate as the tem-
peratures warm, but that is also
when our winds begin. So, for
a more successful early start,
you should consider sod
instead of seeds. Sod is more
expensive, but may be easier
to establish under dry, windy
conditions.
If you prefer a warm-season
grass such as buffalograss,
blue grama, Bermudagrass or
zoysia grass you need to
wait until May to plant. These
grasses need considerably
warmer conditions to germi-
nate. In some years, the winds
may subside somewhat by
May, making establishment of
the lawn easier.
In addition to temperature,
moisture is also important dur-
ing seed germination. In the
early stages of seed germina-
tion and seedling develop-
ment, any drying will kill the
young plant. That is the reason
our spring winds cause such
problems.

Early March is still too early
to plant grass seed in our
area.
Some gardeners use a layer
of straw mulch over the newly
planted grass seeds to reduce
drying. But the winds often
blow the straw from the site,
exposing the soil, seeds and
seedlings. If the straw is
pressed into moist soil with a
roller or by placing sheets of
plywood on the straw, and
walking on then removing the
plywood, the straw may stay
in place more readily.
Gardeners also may plant a
nurse crop of a more quick-
ly germinating type grass to
provide living mulch and wind
protection for more slowly
germinating grass seeds.

water untreated and get by, it
will cost you far more to live
with the damage and inefficien-
cies than to treat it with GMX

In August, 2011 the hottest
August in Albuquerque history
Larry Buelow noticed some-
thing interesting about his elec-
tric bill: it went down. In fact, it
went down a lot. To be precise,
Buelow used 18 percent fewer
kilowatt hours (kWh) last
August than he had the August
before. He was stunned.
We had our New
Millennium spray foam roof
installed in March last year, and
I immediately started tracking
our energy usage, he says.
Compared to 2010, weve seen
lower usage every month
summer and winter some-
times using 30 percent less. I
almost couldnt believe it.
Buelow and his wife decided
to get a spray foam roof for a
variety of reasons. She was
more interested in the energy
savings, he says with a chuck-
le. I just wanted the leaks
fixed.

Buelows home had a tradition-
al tar-and-gravel flat roof. The
roof already had been replaced
once, in 2006, and by 2010 was
leaking again. The fact we
were having problems less than
five years after getting a new
roof made us think about doing
something different, says
Buelow, a retired Lockheed-
Martin engineer. We wanted a
roof that would last longer,
wouldnt leak, and would pro-
vide energy savings. Thats
when we called Rodney.
Rodney Rael, A New
Millenniums owner, wasnt
surprised. A lot of people
choose spray foam just to solve
the leaky roof problems of
many flat roof homes. What
they dont realize is how much
energy theyre going to save.
Spray foam roofs are a green,
energy-efficient product.
As soon as the spray foam
roof was installed, Buelow
began tracking his 2011 energy
usage against his 2010 usage.
Before the new roof
was installed, his ener-
gy consumption rose
each month. But after
the new roof went on,
in mid-March, he saw
an immediate 7 per-
cent drop in kWh
usage.
Each month, Buelow
watched his energy consump-
tion drop from the year prior.
(You can see the actual figures
in the above chart.) And then
came August.
When I saw the 18 percent
drop in energy usage, I won-
dered if it was because it hadnt
been a particularly hot August,
Buelow says. I mean, we have
refrigerated air, so August usual-
ly is a high-consumption month
for us. When I discovered
August 2011 was the hottest on
record, I knew the spray foam
roof had been a great invest-
ment.

home inspection BEFORE they close on a
home. The purpose of the home inspection is
to minimize the chance of being surprised by a
major problem. A home may look to be in great
shape, but problems may not be apparent to the
naked eye.
A home inspector will commonly find
minor cosmetic items that are easier to fix than
major plumbing, roofing or mechanical
repairs. The cost of an inspection can range from $200 to $800 or
more. Many times the seller will pay for the home inspections. The
cost of the home inspection may be much less expensive than
having to repair an unforeseen problem in the new home you
purchased.
Buyers should think of a home inspection as an insurance plan.
Its not easy to pay for home inspection when you think the house
looks good on the surface, but if a problem comes up, you will be
glad you did.
