It was really a golden opportunity to undergo
18t
year M.Phann
Seminar at Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Pharmacy. I take this opportunity to express out heartfelt gratitude to all the people from the college for inspiring me to go to the depth of the subject through theoretical approach in every stage of my work.
I extend my thanks and respect to Dr. Vilasrao J. Kadam, Principal, Bharati Vidyapeeth's College of Pharmacy, Navi Mumbai; for the
to respected
DR. (MRS.)SUPRIYA. SmDHAYE his constant support during the S for course of the seminar.
At last, I would like to extend our gratitude and thankfulness to all of my colleague's and my friends who encouraged me at every step that I took.

OCULAR
M UCOADHESIVE
DRUG
DELIVERY
SYSTEM
INTRODUCTION
[1,2J
Extensive
efforts have recently been focused on targeting region of body for extended
a drug delivery
system in a particular
targeting a drug but also for the better control of systemic drug delivery. The concept of mucoadhesion 1980s. was in introduced into the controlled drug delivery area in early
M ucoadhesives: They are synthetic or natural polymers which interact with mucous layer
covering mucosal epithelial surface and mucin molecules constituting a major part of mucus. Bioadhesion: It is defined as ability of a material to adhere to a biological tissue for
extended period of time. Mucoadhesive drug delivery system utilize the property of bioadhesion of
certain water soluble polymers which become adhesive on hydration and hence can be used for targeting drug to a particular region of the body for extended periods of time. The mucosal layer lines number of regions of the body which represent potential sites for attachment of any bioadhesive system and hence the mucoadhesive drug delivery
systems may include following: ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Buccal delivery system Sublingual delivery system Vaginal delivery system Rectal delivery system Nasal delivery system Ocular delivery system Gastrointestinal delivery system
