|| Sri Ranganaatha Mahimai || Saama Vedam: Part 8 Four Kalasams of Sriranga Pranavakruthi Vimanam representing Four Vedams In my introductory postings , I had mentioned 18 units: four Kalasams , each one standing for one of the Vedams , the Vimanam , Sri Ranganatha, Sri Ranganayaki and eleven AzhwArs who blessed us with 245 paasurams . I had appealed to you to consider support for Sri Ranganatha temple construction by units of 18 bricks . In the next four postings , I will cover the Lord as Veda Saaram . I will start with the Vedam that the Lord Himself extolled as the one very dear to Him : Saama Vedam . SAAMA VEDA SVARUPI: LORD RANGANAATHAN I WILL SELECT ILLUSTRATIVE VERSES THAT COME CLOSE TO AZHWAAR'S ANUBHAVAMS . SAAMAN 1 : ECHO OF THIRUVIRUTTHAM PAASURAM In the first paasuram of Thiruviruttham , NammAzhwar begs the Lord of Gods , Sriman NaarAyaNA to listen to his appeal : --imayOr talaivA ! mey ninRu kEttaruLAi , adiyEn seyyum viNNappamE " In the AgnEya khAndam of Saama vedam (Decad III.29) a similar appeal is made to the Lord to hear well the appeal that is made by the devotee: 7

I as a devotee of Yours am controlling my organs ( Brahmacharyam ) and speech and am eulogizing You with reverence . O Splenderous Lord ( Svayam Jyothi) , O banisher of the sin of avidhyA , please hear Thou my invocation ! ( In AgnEya KhAndham , the reference to Agni stands for the power behind Agni , Sriman NaarAyaNA ). All the four kalasams of the PraNavAkruthi VimAnam are coming into our focus as we hear this Saamn . SAAMAN 3 : TATTVA TRAYAM The three Tattvams --ChEthanam , AchEthanam and Isvaran -- are hinted by the following AgnEya Saaman : kAyamAnO vanA tvam yanmAthrurajagannapa: I na tatthE pramrushE nivarthanam yadh dhUrE sannihAbhuva: II ( Meaning ) : O Lord , who plans in Your Yoga NidhrA the creation of Your worlds for your enjoyment ( BhOga mandalam ) ! SRIVAISHNAVISM Gita The Wisdom of Krishna Practical Guide to Right and Happy Living: In Twenty - Seven Self-contained Essays: Thotalam Chellaswami, Trustee, Srinivasa Gita Satsangh Trust (Retir20. The Law of Least Effort:
Retd Senior I. E. S. Officer Govt. of India and Senior Advisor UN (ILO):
1. By the term iteeyam me, Krishna warns us that that this Primordial Matter or lower Nature is His. So a striver should not accept it as his own; otherwise this affinity will involve him in samsaara. The material elements are not creative. Only the soul is creative. Life cannot be created from matter and matter cannot create itself. Oxygen and hydrogen are Krishnas inferior energy, but when an individual superior energy, mix them, then they become water. 2. There are eight different things of the material nature (Deitys lower prakriti), which are the cause of all material forms: first, the solid, the second, the liquid, third, the gaseous, fourth, the elements of heat and fire, fifth, the elements of ether, sixth, the thought power or force, seventh, the intellect or reasoning power, and eighth, the egoism. These eight make up the external or gross physical or mental phenomenal world. These eight include other states like sense, power, etc. These eight can be expanded to cover the twenty-four different elements of the saamkhya system (to be presented in discussing chapter 13). 3. Prakriti, the primordial matter is constituted of eight entities as described in (7.4). The first group of five - earth, water, fire, air, ether, space or aakaasa, being elemental substances, called mahaabhootaani, comprises the entire physical creation which includes our gross body (sthoola sareera). [The corresponding passive gunas are weight, fluidity, luminosity, motion and vibration. The corresponding active gunas are smell, taste, form, touch and sound.]: The second group of two - mind and intellect, is called mahat tattva (the great or gross principle), denoting subtle creation, includes subtle body (sookshma sareera). The last, the ahamkaara (the principle of egoism), the content of all thought and the process of 15
continuity is the causal factor and includes the casual body (kaarana sareera). The faculty of feeling (emotion) is designated as the mind. The faculty of discrimination (understanding) to distinguish the good from the bad, the agreeable from the disagreeable is designated as the intellect. The egoism (the sense of I) is the one that creates the sense of agency and continuity, without which no action is possible. The individuality of a person is based on these three internal elements (mind, intellect and ego). All these eight entities together constitute the Lords lower Nature (aparaa prakriti), and called so because it is unconscious and cannot exist except in connection with consciousness, which it cannot know and yet works for. [In macro terms it may be stated that by the mind is meant the unmanifest (pradhaana) whose form is not manifested and which can be inferred only by the mind. By the term intellect is meant the cosmic intelligence (mahat).] 4. But jeeva or the individual soul the life principle, is the non-material spiritual aspect of Deitys Nature or Prakriti. There is no doubt that the Deity, the Absolute is Real and beginningless. So naturally His two natures should also be Real and beginningless. [This has been independently confirmed in (13.19).]: Thus Krishna establishes the Reality and beginningless nature of the phenomenal universe of things and beings, though material universe may undergo changes. 5. A keen observation of the world shows that it can be divided into nine distinct parts. The gross objects, including the physical bodies of all beings are composed of the five elements space, air, fire, water, and earth. Each one of us has these five elements in our bodies. The bones and flesh are composed of earth. Blood, mucus and digestive juices represent the water element. Thermal heat, the heat of hunger, etc. is the fire element in us. The gases in the body including the breath taken in are air element in us. The space occupied by the total form is the space element. These gross five elements in the body are seen by a living being. So the individual is superior to them since he knows, and the five elements are inferior as they are the known. In order to know, the individual requires three instruments. The mind is needed to collect data through the five senses, the intellect to guide the mind by its value judgments and finally the sense of ego which is the very basis of all perception. Since the three instruments are used by the individual, they too are inferior to him. Thus the five elements and the three instruments are inferior and the jeeva or the conscious individual is superior. These nine factors are not created by us but are there, as constituting the Deitys Nature Vide Deitys declaration of His inferior and superior natures. When these observations are clearly understood, the other following declarations of the Deity is easy to follow. 6. The lower nature is characterised as changing (kshara) His manifest Nature, simply called prakriti. Lords higher Nature, the individual soul (jeeva-bhoota) is the intangible, the unmanifest, which, struggling with material nature or universe (jada prakriti), upholds, exploits or utilises (yah idam dhaarayate jagat) simply called purusha. This higher nature as such is to be regarded only in relation to the other insentient nature. The above emphasizes that without the presence of the jeeva, the subjective spiritual principle, the material world cannot be held together. The sense data cannot be collated and synthesized into a harmonious whole in the absence of this spiritual principle. Generally we say that the Lord supports the Universe. But here, Krishna stated that the jeevas sustain the universe dhaaryate jagat, for they are the superior energy working within matter. The jeevas can manipulate matter for their enjoyment. Of itself, the aparaa prakriti (matter) has no potency 16
to generate the innumerable manifestations within the universe. The activities of the universe result from the active jeevas moving inert matter. The jeeva prakriti is utilizing the jada prakriti as its body and upholding it too. This act of conscious principle is akin to aakaasa containing within itself all the other four elements, without itself being affected. The Lord means to say that the body subserves the purpose of the individual soul. Thus, the jeeva, in this sense, is the cause of creative process and so is spoken of as the sustaining force of the world. As the individual soul (purusha, animates their respective bodies, which they indwell, so also the higher prakriti (collectivity of jeevas jeeva sakti) animates the entire jagat. This observation contradicts the conception of a universe operating mechanically, without any spiritual touch. Without the jeevas, the subjective spiritual principle, the material world cannot be held together as senses and mind cannot function on their own. It is the presence of countless jeevas that necessitates the cyclic process of time to evolve initiating kalpas and pralayas. For, the karmas of the jeevas come to fruition in the process of time and they have to reap their rewards, which require embodiment. Embodiment of the jeevas requires the evolution of the world systems. The higher prakriti (the life principle, the individual soul or the purusha) is so called because it is conscious and the commanding factor and wields power over the phenomenal world the lower prakriti. The prakriti and purusha belonging as they do to the Deity (me praktitih) are eternal and without a beginning as independently confirmed in (13.19) and discussed earlier. Neither of them is unreal; neither of them is derived from the other. Thus these two prakriti and purusha, constitute the Deitys twofold power (energy) through which He brings about His Cosmic manifestation. Thus the Deitys lower nature is the material universe of things macro phenomenal universe, as well as its modification, micro body-mind-intellect complex the non-self. The Deitys higher nature is the spirit, jeevaatma (the individual soul). 7. It is to be noted that in the eightfold lower nature (aparaa prakriti) are included, not only the five basic elements, but also the mind, the intellect and the ego (7.4). The higher nature (paraa prakriti) is stated as the generator of life or the life principle (7.5). Since, as we understand, mind, intellect and the ego evolved only after life appeared on the planet, there appears to be a contradiction in grouping them with the lower nature, instead of the higher. But this contradiction gets cleared when we are told that the life principle (jeeva boota) is a fragment (amsa) of the Deitys self, which becomes a living soul in the world of life (15.7). So the ego, with its mind and intellect, is not to be identified with the individual soul, which is a fragment of the Deitys Self. - (Krishna Chaitanya): They belong to the category of non-self. In the Gitas conceptual system there is not merely dualism of matter and mind. There is a third element which not only sustains this duality but also is its substratum. This third element is the spirit divine, which belongs to neither to the matter nor to the mind, but is transcendental to both. It may be added that it is substance of the verses (7.4, 5) that is cryptically expressed in Verse (10.8) aham sarvasya prabhavah, mattah sarvam pravartate I am the origin of all; from Me all things and beings evolve. 8. Krishnas assertion that these two natures as His and belonging to Him (me prakritih) is a vital factor in the interpretation of these natures (prakriti and purusha) and their relation to the Supreme Deity. This aspect will be discussed in a latter section to follow. ESSAY WILL CONTINUE..

SRIVAISHNAVISM Guide to 108 DIVYA DESAMS Tamarapu Sampath Kumaran
Om Namo Narayanaya
TIRUNEERMALAI This Divya kshetram is located in the outskirts of Chennai near Pallavaram. This kshetram has three shrines for Ranganatha, Trivikrama and Narasimha on the top of a small hillock and a shrine for Lord Rama at the base. The moolavar in the temple at the base is called Neervannan in a standing posture. Since the shrine together with the hill was surrounded by water during the visit of Tirumangai Azhwar, it gained the name Tiruneermalai. The Thayar is Animamalarmangai. The Theertham is Manikarnika Thatakam and the Vimanam Toyagiri Vimanam. It is believed that Valmiki worshipped the three forms of Vishnu on the top of the hill and while worshipping at the base temple he found Ranganatha and Ranganayaki giving darsan to him as Rama and Sita. Adisesha, Sanku and Chakra appeared as Lakshmana, Bharatha and sathrugna and Garuda as Hanuman. Azhwar Mangalaasaasanam: Tirumangai Azhwar 1078-87, 1115, 1521, 1554, 1660, 1765, 1848, 2069, 2763 (73), 2674 (130) Bhoothatahazhwar 2227 (pasuram numbers as found in Naalaayiram Divya prabhandam). Panguni Utthiram is an important festival. 18
TIRUVIDANDAI
This Divya kshetram is located 40 Kms from Chennai on the road to Mahabalipuram. This place is also called Sripuri and Varahapuri. The moolavar is Lakshmi Varaha perumal also called Nitya Kalyana perumal in a standing posture. The Thayar is Komalavalli Nachiyar in a separate sanctum. The Theertham is Kalyana Theertham and the Vimanam Kalyana Vimanam. The legend has it that the sage Gavala Maharshi had 360 daughters and offered all of them to the Lord. The Lord accepted them and made them into one maiden and kept her on His lap. The Lord married one maiden a day and married all the 360 daughters of the Maharshi in a year and gained the name Nitya kalyana perumal. Since the Lord has His consort to His left side the shetram is also called Edavendai. Markandeya and Mahabali have worshipped at this kshetram. Azhwar mangalaasaasanam: Tirumangai Azhwar 1021, 1108 -1117, 2673 (73), 2674 (119) (pasuram numbers as found in Naalaayira Divya prabhandam). The Brahmotsavam is in the Tamil month of Chittirai and Garuda sevai is held in the Tamil months of Aani, Aadi, Thai and Masi.
Part 96 Mahesvasah, Mahibharta In part 95, Nammazhwar's Thiruvaimozhi moonram pathu containing the fame of namas were dealt briefly. In this part, Fourth Pathu is taken for similar studies. In 4.1.5, it is said even the kings who want to be free from lust, started living by uttering the namas of Sriman Narayana for ever Mayavan per solli vazhmino . He says in this that Sriman narayana's body is shining like a blue diamond. In 4.1.8, Azhwar says the Kings should realise that they get such a status only with the grace of Sriman Narayana who has Audhisesha as bed Aravu Anaiyan Thirunamam padimino . That will make them to attain eternity then.In 4.3.6, Sriman Narayana with Sankham and chakram in His hands will surely bless when one says as Narayanane endru endru olamittu . His feet glittering like lotus ,will then be an ornament in the head of devotees. In 4.4.Nammazhwar praises on the various namas such as Sridharan, Naranan, Achuthan, Manivannan, Nedumal, Govindan, Mayavan, Kannan, Nedumal, Thirumal, ulagalandan, and relates each namas in the episode of peacock dance, kudakkothadal, and other SriKrishna leelas and Seshtithangal. In 4.5 all the pasurams contain the words of sol malaigal, isai malaigal, kavi solla vallar ,van thamizh noorka etc , which highlights the importance of divine names. He states in this Namasmaranam , which singing helps him for seven births, without any regrets. Supreme happiness is possible when one utters His namas and make him free from fate and even illness. In 4.6.5, He says as any disease will disappear immediately when one takes the dust of feet of disciple (Adiyar pada dhooli )as thilak .Along with this, pronouncing the nama of Krishna , who killed Kuvalayapeedam elephant is sure to attain much 21
happiness in every birth. In 4.7, again tells about the glory of namas " Narayana, vamana, Damodara,in first three pasurams. Next part will be about Fifth pathu on Namas, and DharmaSthothram being continued here on 181 and 182 in next paragraphs. The next sloka is Maheshvaaso Mahebhartaa Sreenivasaah sataam gatih/ Aniruddhah suraanandah Govindo Govidaam patih //.In 181 st nama ' Mahesvasah means one who wears Saarnga. Sriman narayana is a great archer, and discharges all arrows perfectly. This is also meant as the wielder of the mighty bow. Maha denotes excellent, enchanting and of all supreme characters. Ishvasah denotes discharging the saarnga or bows. The examples of His skill in discharging arrows may be identified with respect to discharging arrows while building a bridge across the ocean, and Rama Ravana Yuddham in which Rama killed Ravana with ten heads through his bows in a terrific manner. In Gita 10.31, Sri Krishna declares that He is rama: sastrabhrtam aham the wielders of weapons I am Rama. In Poorva nyasa sloka of Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam also we find the lines as saarnga dhanva gadadara ityasthram indicating weapons in all the four sides. In Daya Sathakam of Swamy Vedanta Desika, 106 th sloka Sarnga dhavanugamba is mentioned as Srinivasa with the Sarngam bows in hands. Sri Venkatachalapathy, in Thirumalai hills, is ever having bows in hand and His mercy( Daya )cures us from all our sins . In sloka 28 also Srinivasa's fame as sarnghi is narrated. Swamy tells as Jeevathmas commit lot of sins and suffer by aiming them as bows of Aparatham remedies. But Srinivasa in Tirumalai with bows is to attain success as His karunyam. In 182nd Nama Maheebhartaa ,it is meant as the husband of mother earth. Bhooma Devi is Mother of earth. In Sanskrit, Pathni denotes wife, and Bharta denotes husband. Bharta is also called as the supporter. Sriman Narayana is one who held up the earth submerged in pralaya waters. This nama is about Varaha Avatahram , on how the Lord , as the great boar uplifted the earth from the 'waters of deluge. Swamy Desikan in Daya Sathakam 83 sloka says medhinim samudravthi daye dvadabijishtaya damshtraya about the great talented action of keeping the earth in between two rows of teeth and saved the immersion during pralaya. Sriman Narayana gave His firm assurance for the protection of devotees . Such protections calls of Him to many devotees is found in our epics Srimad Ramayanam, Maha Bharatham and in Sri Varaha Puranam. Sriman Narayana has vowed to give refuge to one and all who seek His support. In Periya Thirumozhi 4.4.8,this avataram is explained as " In the form of a fine boar, He carried the earth on His tusk. The lord with mount meru jingling like a trinklet within the anklet between his hooves with Lakshmi tossed about within his bossom scooped up Goddess earth embraced and placed Her on His tusk". Similar events have occurred many times to save the mother earth. To be continued......Arumbuliyur Jagannathan Rangarajan

SRIVAISHNAVISM Prapanna ParitrANam by Geetha Rangarajan
Prapanna ParitrANam - 3
It is in our inherent nature to always look for security and protection. Once we realize that children do not offer us that protection entirely as we have seen with the examples of Rudran and Kamsan, the mind then looks for alternatives among our other close relationships. Parents and spouses come as excellent options. Would parents then provide complete protection that the soul yearns for? Regrettably, Pillai LokachAryar declares that Kaikeyi as the mother to Bharatan and Hiranyan as the father to Prahalada, did not protect the interests of their children. They both endeavored to do their best to protect their childs interest, but failed to understand the natural swaroopam or the essential nature of their respective children. 29
Mother Swami Pillai LokachAryar highlights the story of how Kaikeyi did not protect her son Bharathas interests. While Lakshmana demonstrated complete ShEshatvam (servitude) to Rama, Bharata demonstrated complete pAratantra jnAnam. Lakshmana symbolizes the sesha spirit uniquely. He served Lord Rama as an umbrella, throne, paduka, couch, and pillow and as everything else. Poigai Azwar explains this in his Mudhal Thiruvandhadi.
Lakshmana served as a role model as to how a Sesha must be. He had no individual liking other than to become the necessary material for Rama. Sumitra understook this nature and did nothing to stifle this spirit of Lakshmana. However, the nature of Bharata was quite different. In his pAratantra spirit, he unflinchingly obeyed to Ramas will rather than to follow his own desire to serve Rama. He displayed self- abnegation and complete obedience without asking why. He says
Kaikeyi as a mother must have facilitated Lakshmanas wishes understanding his very nature. Instead she acted in a way that was not only against her sons wishes but also against his very essence and interest. Father: The story of Prahalada is well known. Hiranyakashipu tortured his son to make him recite his name instead of the name NarAyanA. Once again, Hiranyakashipu did not protect Prahalads interest. . In Thiruvaimozhi, Nammalwar says kaayindu. Hiranyakashipus desire to invalidate the paratvam of Sriman NarAyanan was much stronger than the responsibility to protect his son, Prahalada.
Let us now turn our to attention to husbands and see if they can offer protection to wives. Husband: Hindu marriage ceremonies symbolically illustrate many Srivaishnava principles. When a father performs kannigA dhAnam, the father takes on the role of an AchAryA, the girl becomes the jivatma, the mothers upadesam becomes the dwayam and the girls husbands house becomes Srivaikuntam. The girl becomes a dasi and surrenders everything to her husband, who represents Sriman NarAyanA. Just as NarAyanA protects all the surrendered souls, it becomes the obligation of the husband to protect his wife. But does this happen all the time? Pillai LokachAryar pronounces that this is not the case by quoting the examples of Pandavas and Nalan.
During the game of dice with Kauravas, Dharmaputra wrongly considered Draupati as his property and gambled her away. Draupatis other husbands also did not protest at this. Another example is Nala, a great king. He lost a war and had to leave his kingdom with his wife. However, he was quite distraught at the happenings and could not sleep properly. He left his wife alone in the middle of the night convincing himself that he cannot protect her anyway. Pillai LokachAryar Pillai Lokacharyar Thiruvadigale Saranam (will be continued)
Inner meanings based on Sri Perukkaarani swami commentary In the previous four paasurams Andal refers to one of the different forms of the Lord. In todays paasuram (5), Andal indulges with anubhavams of all the five different forms of The Lord (Para, Vyuha, Vibhava, Archai & Antaryami) and assures prappannans that He will eradicate all our sins. Andal begins with maayanai mannu vadamathurai mainthanaith. Mayan refers to Para form of the Lord. As a Mayan, He miraculously exhibits both His supremacy (paratvam) & easy accessibility (sowlabyam) simultaneously. Madurakavai azhwar marvels how the supreme personality Lord Krishna let Himself be bound by mother Yashoda katunna panna peru maayan. Mayan also means, He has the entire Maya, material world as His body (yasya pritivi sareeram) and has it under His control. As a controller, He can either cover us with Maaya (Vaiharikeem Mohana Pinchikamthe) or save us from the material word (Maam evaye prapandyanthe mayaam etam taranti te). He can do both. Andal next celebrates Her favorite, Lord Krishna (Vibava form) who appeared in Mathura (Vada Mathurai) as son (mainthan) of Devi and Vasudevar- vadamathurai mainthanai. 31
Next Andal enjoys His Vyuha form, Sheerabthi Nathan reclining in the shore of Viraja nadhi (Thooya peruniir) -thUya perunIr thuRaivanai. Finally Andal enjoys His Archai form, Damodaran and Antharyami form as Vilaku- He resides in our heart as Paramatma shining like a lamp). Andal now invites all prappannas to approach Him with purity (thUyOmaay) and offer kainkaryam with all the three karanams (mano, vaak & kaayam). To offer flowers Thoomalar Thoovi Thozhudu. Apart from fragrant flowers such as Tulasi, the eight flowers ahimsa (non-violence), indriya-nigrha(sense control), Sarva-buta daya (compassion to all), kshamaa (tolerance), Jnanam (knowledge),tapas (austerity), Dhyaanam (meditation) & satyam (truth) are enjoyed more by The Lord. To chant His names and sing His glories Vaayinaal paadi To meditate on His five different forms mentioned above- manaththinaal cinnthikkap Andal assures if one approaches The Lord, the two type of sins, Sanchitam (pOya pizhaiyum) and Aagaami (pukutharuvaan) will be burnt like cotton in fire (thIyinil thUs aakum) as promised by Lord Krishna in Bagavat Gita. Andal also gently reminds Lord Krishna of His duties here. For a prappanna He also removes Swaroopa virothi (identifying the body as self/atma), Upaaya virodhi (considering means other than the Lord to be better) and Praapya Virodhi (considering material benefits rather than The Lord as a fruit).
The total thirty paasurams of ThiruppAvai have been grouped in to six sets of five (pendant) by AchAryAs (5x5+5=30 or 6 x 5 =30).
So far we have completed the 1 st pendant comprising of the first five paasurams. The first pedant focuses on The steps to perform the nOnbu Saluting the 5 lakhs gopis of Ayarapadi who participated in the vrutham.-(as per Swami Desikar) The inner meanings of the first of the six doctrines given by Lord Varadharajar Tomorrow we will begin with the 2 nd pendant.

SRIVAISHNAVISM DO YOU KNOW ? 51. Simple Home Remedies
MINOR WOUND : REMEDY: HONEY Honey deprives bacteria of the water it needs to multiply. Thwart infection with a swipe of the sweet stuff, and cover the cut with a bandage. SUNBURN, RAZOR BURN : REMEDY: MILK Dip a clean washcloth into a bowl of cool milk and dab it on the burned areas. (The coolness can help reduce swelling, and milks lactic acid has anti-inflammatory properties.) Then rinse it off. Or try: Olive oil, which has natural compounds that protect against inflammation. That being said, a sunburn could be dangerous. Visit the Mens Health Skin Cancer Center to learn how to protect, detect, and treat burns, eczema and other skin irritations. FLAKY HAND SKIN : REMEDY: SUGARCoat your wet hands with sugarthe coarser the better. The rough grains scrub away flakes and dead skin cells. If possible, use demerara, a dark sugar with large granules; its sold in specialty-food stores. DRY SKIN AND LIPS : REMEDY: OLIVE OIL Olive oil closely resembles your own natural oils, which can be stripped away by harsh soaps and dry heat. Smooth a few drops onto your palm and rub it into your skin to soften rough spots and form a protective moisture barrier. 33
INSECT BITES : REMEDY: APPLE-CIDER VINEGAR Dab the vinegar onto each bite with a paper towel. The acidity can help reduce swelling and curb your urge to scratch. ATHLETES FOOT : REMEDY: APPLE-CIDER VINEGAR A mixture of one part vinegar and three parts water can kill the fungi that cause foot infections. For athletes foot relief, just soak your feet in it for a while. Of course, knowing what causes it in the fist place can also help prevent a reoccurrence. Start by reading Athletes Foot Treatment and Prevention. STINKY SNEAKERS : REMEDY: BAKING SODA A sprinkle between wearings can help neutralize funky odors. Just dont forget to dump out the excess before you slide your shoes back on. Or try: Orange peels. Leave peels in your shoes overnight to replace bacterial odors with a fresh scent. REEKING ARMPITS : REMEDY: APPLE-CIDER VINEGAR Its not sweat that makes your pits reekits the bacteria that break down your sweat. (Gross, right?) So dip a cotton ball or a washcloth into cider vinegar and rub it under your arms. Vinegars astringent properties wont allow microbes to thrive. And dont worry about the sharp smellit dissipates quickly. Or try: Baking soda, which absorbs stench.Sources: David Bank, M.D., director of the Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, in Mount Kisco, New York; Brian Boy, director of grooming at Mens Health magazine; Jennifer Jablow, D.D.S.; Ian B. It was the first municipality in Indian mainland, established on 9 February 1861. 140-Years of its formation has been celebrated in 2001. Bheemunipatnam is supposed to have originated in the days of the Pandavas (its named after Bheema). Most probably its origins were around the 16th century, whena boat load of Dutch dropped anchor with the intention of making the lovely harbour (the River Gosthani meets the Bay of Bengal). The 25 kilometres stretch of road from Visakhapatnam literally hugging the coastline is simply breathtaking. Bheemili lies at the mouth of River Gosthani joining the Bay of Bengal and forms an alluring recess to the town. Sri Tridandi Srimannarayana Ramanuja China Jeeyar Swami has set up the Vedic Adhyayana Research Institute Jeeyar Ashram (VARIJA) on the pristine beach of Visakhapatnam-Bheemunipatnam Road. Its legendary name was Eakachakrapuram. It is an ancient thirtha kshetra. Many pouranic personages, like the redoubtable Pandava prince Bhima had visited and offered prayers to this archamurti specifically expiation of the sin of killing Bakasura - the formidable demon, who not only swallowed the cart loads of food, but also the beasts, cart and carts man that brought food. After offering soulful prayers with

rituals due, he experienced the eternal presence of that Karunaikasindu Narasimha here and so caused a temple built. The Lord is infinitely benevolent in fulfilling the desires of the duhkhartis. With the passage of time, the temple grew in size and gained sanctity. Renovations have been made by the devout public from time t6 time and hence a steady stream of asthikas throughout the year. The Pandavas were also said to have reconstructed the temple of Lord Narasimha on the Soumyagiri hill, which was destroyed by the demon. It is a hill temple built on a hillock of modest dimensions. It contains all the essential parts, like towers, garbhagriha, antarala, pradakshinapatha, dwajasthamba etc. The archamurti is made of stone and holds in His hands- sudarsan and conch. And quite pleasant to look at. River Gosthani joins the sea in its vicinity. Hence doubly famous as a thirtha kshetra. Here are found many holy ponds, like Ramagundam, Sitagundam, Lakshmangundam and Hanumagundam. Yatris bathe in them invariably on listening to the legends connected with them. Offering pindas to manes is deemed very efficacious and devotees worship the Lord after this ritual with utmost devotion. Standing atop the hill, if one stretches his gaze around, colourful Nature feasts his eyes and elevates his spirits. The Kalyanotsavam is the star attraction and during this annual function several thousands visit and participate in many important ritualistic offerings. This falls on Jyesta suddha navami corresponding to July on the Julian calendar. As it is deemed one of 32 holy Narasimha kshetras, its pull is great. How to Reach? It lies 20 km off Vijayanagaram in AP and accessible by four wheelers from it. It can be reached from Dhoen, a railway station on the Hyderabad - Bangalore meter-guage line. The A.P.S.R.T.C and private busses running from towns like cuddapah, Kurnool can be pressed into service and they are available at all times.

SRIVAISHNAVISM Ivargal Tiruvakku For His devotees If the question as to the reason for the Rama avatara is put to us, we would say that it was to kill Ravana. But where is the need for the Lord's descent to the earth, just to accomplish this? He can do it easily from His abode. Or we might say His avataras were to help the celestials when they were in trouble. But were the celestials so beyond blemish and blame that the Lord must personally come to their rescue? Was Indra, the king of the celestials, not guilty of the most heinous acts, as for example his seeking Ahalya, the wife of another? Would the Lord have come for these celestials? He comes to earth to show His love for us and be the recipient of our love towards Him, said V.S. Karaunakarachariar in a discourse. He came as Rama, to enjoy the affection of Guha and Sabari, and to eat the fruits that Sabari offered. He came as Krishna, because of the pure, unconditional love of the Gopikas towards Him. His avataras were primarily because He wanted to be in the company of His devotees. The killing of asuras or the saving of celestials was only incidental. The Lord is merciful, and does not like to kill even those who dislike Him. When Ravana is defeated in battle, the Lord tells him to leave the battlefield, and come again the next day. The Lord's hope is that, with a whole night to ponder over his actions, Ravana might change his mind and hand over Sita to the Lord. Then the Lord can spare his life. The Lord thus looks for excuses to save even the most wicked among us. Ravana, however, does not turn over a new leaf, and is killed by the Lord. Vibhishana refuses to perform the last rites for his brother, and Rama says He will perform the last rites, if Vibhishana will not. The Lord made this offer, because with this act of the Lord, Ravana's soul would be liberated. As long as Ravana was alive, he resisted all the Lord's attempts to spare his life. Now that he was dead, he could not protest the Lord's act of kindness, which would liberate him. So reasoned Rama. Thus, the Lord has nothing but love for all. It is when we do not realise this that we end up being unhappy. ,CHENNAI, DATED Jan 29 th 2011. 41
