PROJECT PROPOSAL FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF ANIMAL HUSBANDRY PROGRAAMMES

UNDER NATIONAL AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAAMME (RKVY)

Genetic improvement of cattle and Buffaloes

Government is implementing Livestock breeding programmes with introduction of superior germ plasm.Artificial insemination of cattle and buffaloes are done in various institutions of the department and calves are born with inherited superior germplasm. But at farmers level this full potential of inherited germplasm is not exploited because of ignorance and poor management practices. Lot of extension work has to be carried out for this purpose along with some incentive by way of cash and inputs. Cash incentive for reporting of AI born calves will help identify AI born calves and will motivate farmers for AI for their breeding programmes.Inputs like free mineral mixture, calf feed will help farmers to have their calves attain early maturity with their full genetic potential expression.

Enhancement of milk production

Training programmes for clean milk production, scientific feeding practice, general farm management practice, cash incentives for construction of cattle sheds, conduct of cattle shows, awarding prize for high yielding cows/buffaloes will motivate farmers and helpfor enhancement of milk production

Development of small ruminants

There is not much of promotional schemes for small ruminants except deworming.Without much external help sheep/goat farmers are rearing with out adopting any scientific husbandry practice. Proper training in those areas, cash incentives for construction of shed, insurance cover, will help them in a long

Devlopment of backyard poultry

Though poultry development in the country has taken a quantum leap in the last three decades, the growth has been mainly restricted to commercial poultry. Rural backyard poultry, though still contributing nearly 30% to the national egg production, is the most neglected one. This is in spite of the fact that their poultry eggs and meat fetch a much higher price than that from commercial poultry. 70% of the poultry products and eggs are consumed in urban and semi urban areas and the rural consumption is quite low. Private poultry producers are also not able to attend to the needs of major rural consumers . The major limiting factor in the way of increasing consumption of egg and poultry meat in rural area is poor availability. Most of the commercial poultry egg and meat production is centered in the urban and semi-urban areas. Due to their operation being of an industrial nature, the private sector is not inclined to go to the rural areas, particularly to small

,farmers and landless farmers including women . The private commercial sector is understandably reluctant to enter the rural backyard poultry sector as they aim at higher and quick profits, through larger investments. Thecommercial poultry sector is doing business, through integrated approach of contract farming using high-input and highoutput birds. For the poorest ofo the poor and the landless, the major issues are food security and risk spreading through subsidiary income, which are not addressed by the private commercial sector. It is well known fact that a fairly significant proportion of the landless and marginal farmers eke out their living from poultry and other small ruminants. Backyard poultry requiring hardly any infrastructure set-up is a potent tool for upliftment of the poorest of the poor. Besides income generation, Rural backyard poultry provides nutrition supplementation in the form of valuable animal protein and empowers women.Under this situation Government of India has come forward to strengthen poultry research stations for improvement of desi birds and made available for popularizing for rural backyard poultry keeping.Distribution of such improved desi birds along with night shelter for birds ,poultry feeds along with veterinary care will help to achieve desired goal of Govt. of India
