Once more we are reminded how time runs fast! This Wednesday will be Ash Wednesday and we will begin the season of Lent. Once more on these 40 days of Lent we are given the opportunity for prayer, penance, and charitable works. The US Bishops applying the Code of Canon Law(Canon 1250-1252) declared that Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. In addition, all Catholics 14 years old and older must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting as explained by the U.S. bishops means partaking of only one full meal. Some food (not equaling another full meal) is permitted at breakfast and around midday or in the eveningdepending on when a person chooses to eat the main or full meal. Abstinence forbids the use of meat, but not of eggs, milk products or condiments made of animal fat. Pope Paul VI in his "Apostolic Constitution on Penance," reminded us of the divine law that each of us in our own way do penance. We must all turn from sin and make reparation to God for our sins. We must forgive and show love for one another just as we ask for God's love and forgiveness. The Code of Canon Law and our bishops remind us of other works and means of doing penance: prayer, acts of self-denial, almsgiving and works of personal charity. Attending Mass daily or several times a week, praying the rosary, making the way of the cross, attending the parish evening prayer service, teaching the illiterate to read, reading to the blind, helping at a soup kitchen, visiting the sick and shut-ins and giving an overworked mother a break by baby-sittingall of these can be even more meaningful and demanding than simply abstaining from meat on Friday.

However, before Ash Wednesday, we have one final day to party, according to the world, before penance commences. The correct name for Fat Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday (check your calendar). The dictionary says that it means to shrive or take from and also, to confess sins and be absolved. This is our preparation time for the coming Lent. In New Orleans, they use the French translation, Mardi Gras, which literally means Fat Tuesday. The party is called Carnival there, which in French, interprets to farewell to meat, which could explain why pancake races and pancake breakfasts are so popular then.

Ash Wednesday Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday, when the Church offers the Blessed Ashes to us as a sacramental. (not a sacrament). This means that the merit or spiritual good depends on the disposition and faith of the one who receives the ashes. By receiving them, we commit to 40 days of self-denial, almsgiving, and prayer. So if you receive the ashes, but do nothing more during Lent, youll merit very Parish Finance Council: little. Keep in mind that the ashes remind us of our death and that Chair Fred Bogina Members Bill Harman, Judy Wingebach, Linda Broyles someday, well have to give an account to God, our Judge, of all that we did on earth. Why does the Church use ashes can be answered by stating that ashes are a sign of weakness. It can ALL be dissolved to ashes in a few moments. The only thing that you possess Presidents Day that cannot be destroyed by the elements is YOUR RELATIONSHIP This Monday is observed as Presidents Day. At one time, we WITH GOD. It cannot be destroyed, but it can be lost if we cling to honored great men in February--Washington and Lincoln who were things more closely than we do to God. THINGS dont destroy our both born during this month. They each had their day, which they relationship with God. Its our ATTITUDE about things. We must deserved since the former is the Father of our country and the latter remember that ALL things will become dust. Since the Church asks saved our Union from destruction. However, Congress got involved in 1971 and moved Washingtons birthday to the 3rd Monday of Feb- us to do something during Lent, we might try to lessen our attachruary. In the mid-80s, they did more slashing and expanded the day to ment to things that keep us from God, such as money, certain people, or an unforgiving heart.
