HSC 027.

1] Understand own responsibilities, and the responsibilities of others, relating to health and safety in the work setting

Assessment Criteria 1.1 identify legislation relating to general health and safety in a health or social care work setting

[HSC 027.2] Understand the use of risk-assessments in relation to health and safety

Assessment Criteria 2.1 explain why it is important to assess health and safety hazards posed by the work setting or by particular activities This is to know that the worker is protected against hazard and putr the worker into safety. 2.2 explain how and when to report potential health and safety risks that have been identified When to report potential risks may include: immediately when existing control measures are inadequate when additional control measures are required when there have been changes to original risk assessment e.g. changes to working practices 2.3 explain how risk-assessment can help address dilemmas between rights and health and safety concerns Risk assessment can help by e.g.: making the individual aware

of the risks making the individual aware of the responsibilities employees and the employer have being used as the basis for safe working arrangements
[HSC 027.3] Understand procedures for responding to accidents and sudden illness

Assessment Criteria 3.1 describe different types of accidents and sudden illness that may occur in own work setting

Accidents may include: falls burns and scalds slips and trips swallowing a hazardous Substance 3.2 outline the procedures to be followed if an accident or sudden illness should occur

Sudden Illness may include: cardiac arrest difficulty with breathing stroke hypoglycaemia seizures loss of consciousness food poisonin Procedures may include: recording and reporting of accident or illness with full details registered person submitting notification to CQC and HSE informing individuals next of kin
[HSC 027.4] Be able to reduce the spread of infection

Assessment Criteria 4.1 demonstrate the recommended method for hand washing

Method 1
Wet Rub hands under hands warm together running to water. make Add soap. bubbles.

3. Rub soapy bubbles all around for 20 seconds - on hands, wrists, between fingers, and under fingernails. 4. Rinse under warm running water.

5. Dry well with a clean towel.

Method 2
1. Wash your hands in warm water. Make sure the water isn't too hot for little hands.

2. Use soap and lather up for about 10 to 15 seconds (antibacterial soap isn't necessary any soap will do). Make sure you get in between the fingers and under the nails where uninvited germs like to hang out. And don't forget the wrists!

3. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.

Method 3
1. Wet your hands with warm, running water and apply liquid soap or use clean bar soap. Lather well. 2. Rub your hands vigorously together for at least 15 to 20 seconds.

3. Scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails. 4.Rinsewell. 5.Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel.

6. Use a towel to turn off the faucet.

Assessment Criteria 5.1 identify legislation that relates to moving and handling

Current legislation may include: Manual handling Operations Regulations Health & Safety at Work Act 5.2 explain principles for moving and handling equipment and other objects safely

Principles may include: avoiding hazardous manual handling conducting a full risk assessment of load, task, environment and individual reporting immediately any difficulties adhering to agreed working practices using equipment correctly 5.3 move and handle equipment or other objects safely

Reasons may include: to comply with legislation to minimise injury to individual, self or others to safeguard own and others health and safety to apply agreed working practices to use equipment correctly
[HSC 027.6] Know how to handle hazardous substances and materials

Assessment Criteria

6.1 identify hazardous substances and materials that may be found in the work setting

Hazardous Substances may include: cleaning materials disinfectants body fluids medication 6.2a describe safe practices for: storing hazardous substances Safe practices for storing may include: in correct and labelled containers only under correct conditions as per instructions in a secure area 6.2b using hazardous substances Safe practices for using may include: reading instructions on label before using not mixing substances together incorrectly only using substances if trained to do so using PPE as instructed 6.2c disposing of hazardous substances and materials

Safe practices for disposing may include: under correct conditions as per instructions by following disposal workplace procedure
[HSC 027.7] Understand how to promote fire safety in the work setting

Assessment Criteria

7.1a describe practices that prevent fires from: starting

Procedures to prevent fire may include: no smoking not having fire doors propped open checking appliances are turned off checking plugs are switched off following a procedure Checklist 7.1b spreading y y Confine the fire using fire extinguisher Having a reachable fire host outlet to avoid spreading much to the building

7.2 outline emergency procedures to be followed in the event of a fire in the work setting

Procedures to follow in event of fire may include: raise the alarm dial 999 or inform health and safety officer/manager immediately go to fire assembly point move self and others away from danger area if safe to do 7.3 explain the importance of maintaining clear evacuation routes at all times this is provide easy exit in times of emergency so that unexpected cases can be lessen.
[HSC 027.8] Be able to implement security measures in the work setting

Assessment Criteria

use agreed ways of working for checking the identity of anyone requesting access to: premises To access the premises you can have a letter to the manager of the unit/ homes to access or enter the premises. 8.1a 8.1b information

Privacy should always be a concern. We can release documents of information if t is only necessary like if it is requested by the law or any court or if mandated of the law. 8.2 implement measures to protect own security and the security of others in the work setting

Providing a rules in releasing information about the homes. Or talking to the office manager if need to release any information. Having a CCTV camera outside the area. 8.3 explain the importance of ensuring that others are aware of own whereabouts

This is to provide awareness so that untoward incidence can be lessened.


[HSC 027.9] Know how to manage own stress

Assessment Criteria 9.1 identify common signs and indicators of stress

Common signs and indicators of stress may include: feeling more tearful or sensitive loss of motivation changes in sleep patterns changes in eating habits 9.2 identify circumstances that tend to trigger own stress

Circumstances may include: increased demands from others changes in working practices or new working practices

changes in team members relationships unexpected changes i.e. financial, personal, work 9.3 describe ways to manage own stress

Ways may include: taking time out for yourself talking through how you feel with your line manager attending any stress management courses available engaging in relaxing activities whilst away from work
[HSC 2028.1] Understand anatomy and physiology in relation to moving and positioning individuals

Assessment Criteria 1.1 outline the anatomy and physiology of the human body in relation to the importance of correct moving and positioning of individuals 1.2 describe the impact of specific conditions on the correct movement and positioning of an individual
[HSC 2028.2] Understand current legislation and agreed ways of working when moving and positioning individuals

Assessment Criteria 2.1 describe how current legislation and agreed ways of working affect working practices related to moving and positioning individuals

2.2 describe what health and safety factors need to be taken into account when moving and positioning individuals and any equipment used to do this
[HSC 2028.3] Be able to minimise risk before moving and positioning individuals

Assessment Criteria 3.1 access up-to-date copies of risk-assessment documentation

3.2a carry out preparatory checks using: the individuals care plan 3.2b the moving and handling risk-assessment 3.3 identify any immediate risks to the individual 3.4 describe actions to take in relation to identified risks 3.5 describe what action should be taken if the individuals wishes conflict with their plan of care in relation to health and safety and their risk assessment 3.6a prepare the immediate environment ensuring adequate space for the move in agreement with all concerned 3.6b that potential hazards are removed 3.7 apply standard precautions for infection prevention and control
[HSC 2028.4] Be able to prepare individuals before moving and positioning

Assessment Criteria 4.1a demonstrate effective communication with the individual to ensure that they understand the details and reasons for the action/activity being undertaken 4.1b agree the level of support required 4.2 obtain valid consent for the planned activity

[HSC 2028.5] Be able to move and position an individual

Assessment Criteria 5.1a follow the care plan to ensure that the individual is positioned using the agreed technique 5.1b in a way that will avoid causing undue pain or discomfort 5.2 demonstrate effective communication with any others involved in the manoeuvre 5.3 describe the aids and equipment that may be used for moving and positioning 5.4 use equipment to maintain the individual in the appropriate position

5.5 encourage the individuals active participation in the manoeuvre 5.6 monitor the individual throughout the activity so that the procedure can be stopped if there is any adverse reaction 5.7 demonstrate how to report and record the activity noting when the next positioning manoeuvre is due
[HSC 2028.6] Know when to seek advice from and/or involve others when moving and positioning an individual

Assessment Criteria 6.1 describe when advice and/or assistance should be sought to move or handle an individual safely 6.2 describe what sources of information are available about moving and positioning individuals
