Institut National des Sciences Appliques de Rouen Bi-Lingual Course - POINT MECHANICS (P2) Dr Simon Busbridge

2011 - 2012

FIRST EXAM (28 JANUARY 2012)

FULL MARKS (MAX 75) CAN BE OBTAINED BY CORRECTLY ANSWERING ALL 3 QUESTIONS

This test is worth 30% of the total course mark

YOU MUST SHOW ALL OF YOUR CALCULATIONS MARKS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR INCOMPLETE SOLUTIONS
and

SOLUTIONS ARE REQUIRED IN ENGLISH

When you have completed the examination, enter the information requested on the last page. Detach this page and submit it separately. This page will remain at the INSA in Rouen and is a contingency in case the main papers are lost en route to Brighton.

Maximum time allowed: 2 hours Marks to part questions are indicated ( ). Note that the three questions carry equal marks.

THE FOLLOWING DATA SHOULD BE USED WHERE APPROPRIATE The acceleration due to gravity, g = 9.81 m s-2

1.

The velocity of an object is shown as a function of time in the graph in figure 1. Assume that the displacement is zero when the time is zero.

Figure 1

(a) Using the graph paper draw the corresponding acceleration versus time graph.

(5)

(b) Using the graph paper draw the corresponding displacement versus time graph. (12) Ensure that you provide scales for the axes of your graphs for parts (a) and (b), and indicate the shape of your lines for part (b). (c) Calculate the total distance travelled by the particle in the first 12 seconds. (d) State whether or not the motion is possible in practice, and give a reason. (4) (4)

2. (a) Starting from the definitions of acceleration and velocity, obtain the three equations of constantly accelerated motion

(6)

(b) A projectile is used to intercept a hovercraft (a British invention...) travelling horizontally with velocity, u. The projectile is fired with velocity, v, at an angle to the horizontal, , when the hovercraft has approached to a horizontal distance, D, as shown in fig. 2.

Figure 2

(i) If the interception is successful obtain a quadratic equation for v in terms of g, D, u and ; write this equation in the form: av2 + bv + c = 0 (ii) Assume the following values: D = 20 km, u = 36 km hr-1 and = 30. Calculate the two values of v if interception of the hovercraft is to be achieved. Are they both feasible? Find also the distance(s) of intercept (from P) and the time(s). (7) (12)

3. (a) (i) (ii)

State Newtons three laws of motion.

(4)

Describe the origin of the friction force, and explain why it is important for transport. (4)

(b) A mass, m1, rests on a plane included at an angle, , to the horizontal, as shown in figure 3. The coefficient of friction between the mass and the plane is 0.4

Figure 3 (i) (ii) Deternine the maximum value for before the mass starts to move (2)

Hence make a graph of the acceleration, a, as a function of , in the range 0 90. (8)

The mass m1 is now connected to mass m2 by a light and inelastic string. The pulley is frictionless and the angle is now fixed, = 30. Please see figure 4.

Figure 4

(iii) Calculate the conditions on m2 between which the system is stable.
