The Importance of
Reaching Kids

I
t seemed like a natural connection: kids and Christmas. So, I thought we
should dedicate our winter issue of Multiply to our Kids’ EE ministry.
But as the team began writing stories and hearing testimonies about all
that God is doing through this great work, this Kids’ EE issue took on a
much more serious nature.
The importance of reaching kids for Christ cannot be understated. Yes,
they are the future of the church, but for too long, as one of our Kids’ EE
representatives stated, the church has been simply entertaining kids. What
Kids’ EE has taught us all, is that kids CAN grasp the Gospel message, share
it with others, teach others how to share it, and have impact for the Kingdom.
And there has never been a more important time. While traveling
through several villages in Africa, I was amazed at how many children were
without parents. They are victims of AIDS within their families. Many (some
would say most) of these children will contract AIDS and die before they
reach 16. Someone needs to share Christ with these kids while there is still a
chance. Kids’ EE is doing just that. It helps to equip children’s workers with
a powerful tool to reach kids all over the world with the life-saving news
of Jesus.
Kids’ EE is a Gospel ministry for a young age—and for the ages. Let’s
not forget our kids.

It’s More Than What You Know...
And Kids are Doing Something With It
No Other Ministry Does What Kids’ EE Does
L
ori Aubuchon has been
involved in children’s
ministry for more than 20
years. Throughout those
years, she has seen scores
of children’s ministry
curriculum. “Lots of good stuff
out there,” she says.
The curriculum is so good
that church kids can learn to
quote verses and tell Bible
stories as easy as they tally
points in a computer game.
Yet, for Lori, that’s not enough.
“We must take it from
book learning to personal life
application,” explains Lori.
Fifteen years ago, Lori
experienced a transformation
in kids like she had never seen
before. Peoples Church, in
Fresno, CA, took the adult EE
materials and began adapting
them for kids. They called it
EE FYP (For Young People).
Interestingly, this came at a
time when EE International
was experimenting with a
kids evangelism ministry that
would eventually be called
Kids’ EE.
Lori was stunned. She saw
kids “do” evangelism. Hesitant
and nervous at first, kids were
boldly proclaiming the Gospel.
“I not only saw a change in
kids, but in the leaders and in
the kids’ families,” Lori says.
What Lori experienced
was a combination of
discipleship and Gospel
sharing that no other kids
curriculum offered.
Today, Lori works as a
full-time Kids’ EE Specialist in
the western U.S. region. She’s
a missionary with a specific
mission: Get churches to
implement Kids’ EE.
First, she addresses the
fear of failure so prevalent in
most churches today. “Adults,
poorly trained in evangelism,
have negative experiences and
don’t want to subject their kids
to what they experienced,”
Lori remarks. “So they say, ‘no
way am I subjecting my kids to
this.’ But once they get a taste
of Kids’ EE, they see the value
of equipping kids effectively.”

Secondly, Lori addresses
churches that are overwhelmed
with programs and have no
time for anything else. She
sees churches as so busy that
their eyes are glazed over.
Plates are full. Lori compares
it to a plateful of food lacking
true nourishment. “They are
missing something in their
spiritual diets. The challenge is
to pull some things off of that
plate that Kids’ EE can replace
to give them a better balance.”
For Lori, Kids’ EE
has become her mission.
Whether it’s Kids’ EE’s cross-
generational connections
as adults work closely with
kids, its interactive approach,
or its teaching of a biblical
worldview, Lori is preaching it.
“I have been in children’s
ministry for 25 years, and no
other ministry does what Kids’
EE does.”
Lori understands the
importance of equipping kids
in grades four through six.
“The church’s attitude is to
wait until they are in junior
high and high school,” she
says.
Unfortunately for the
church, by then, it could be too
late.

A History of Kids’ EE;
A Decade of Changed Lives
D
id you know that, in
North America, there
are more than 40 million
children who have not
heard the Good News of
Jesus Christ as Savior?
Less than 30 percent are being
reached by any form of Bible
instruction.
When research like this
surfaced years ago, we began
asking some questions: Who
are these kids? What do they
believe? How do they view
the world? How can we reach
them?
In 1998, Rick Bond, Vice
President for Youth EE, sought
training to equip young kids.
With help from Pat Cannon,
past Children’s Ministry Leader
at Coral Ridge Presbyterian
Church, and Susie Miller, past
CRPC Children’s Director, a
new evangelism ministry for
kids in grades four through six,
began to take shape. “It was a
collaborative effort between Pat
and Susie,” Rick recalls. “They
really thought this training
through to make it work.”
Tested were several ideas
and methods with kids as the
focus groups. “We realized,”
Susie recalls, “that God had
placed this same dream and
vision in all of us for such a time

as this.” The pilot program was
initiated in January 1999.
When EE Board Member,
Bill Allen, first saw the
curriculum, he became excited
about the possibilities and
brought it to the EE Board
of Directors to give it serious
consideration. “Bill was
instrumental in establishing
Kids’ EE as its own department
with its own director,” Rick
says. “Those moves gave Kids’
EE the credibility it needed.”
Following a field test and
pilot, Pat and Susie further
developed the curriculum.
Susie remembers the pressure
in getting it final. “We had not
gotten all of the kinks out when
Rick asked us to conduct the
first Kids’ EE clinic,” Susie
says. “We were literally blowing
on the ink of the materials when
15 clinicians arrived in April of
1999.”
Clinicians had arrived
from Indonesia, Philippines,
Honduras, and all across the
U.S. Pat and Susie stacked all
of their materials on flatbed
dollies wheeling them from
room to room. It wasn’t the
ideal presentation for a first-time
clinic, but the clinicians were
patient. “They all made vital
contributions to the big picture,”
Susie exclaims.
Kids’ EE was off and
running.
The first overseas Kids’
EE Clinics were held in May
of 2000 in the Philippines
and Indonesia. Since then,
Kids’ EE has grown rapidly
internationally and is now on
every continent. The materials
have been translated into
Albanian, Chinese, Finnish,
Indonesian, Portuguese,
Russian, Spanish, and a host of
other languages. As the Kids’
EE ministry is introduced to
nations internationally, it is
being adapted to the cultural
needs and contexts of each
area under the direction of
the continental leadership
of Evangelism Explosion
International.
Dr. Karen Gushta was
the first Director for Kids’ EE
North America. Marcia Ardis is
the current Director. With such
quality leadership, Kids’ EE
made great gains. Added was
a full scale Kids’ EE musical
drama called The Big Trip,
complete with musical score and
lyrics.
In 2006, the materials were
given a fresh facelift. In addition
to The Big Trip, other original
items were developed like the
World Manual that made Kids’
EE accessible to Third World
countries, and the innovative
Kids Evange-Cube.
The materials thrive on
interaction and relationships
with fun illustrations, skits,
hand motions, songs, cadences,
marches, craft projects, all
enveloped in meaningful
dialogue between adult leaders
and children, and especially
grounded in Scripture.
Dr. Kennedy often
remarked, “When Jesus said,
‘Go and make disciples of all
nations,’ He did not put any
age limits or requirements on
this command.” Certainly, we
should be training our children
to be fervent disciples of Jesus
Christ, and an essential part
of that training should include
equipping them to share the
Gospel.

Christians say they
came to know
Christ before
the age of 14. It
became imperative
that EE begin
reaching kids. “If
we don’t reach
children with the
Gospel,” Marcia
remarks, “then we
are missing the
greatest window
of opportunity in a
person’s life!”
Kids’ EE would win kids
to Christ, ground them in
their faith, and train them to be
witnesses.
Marcia says with great
enthusiasm, “Kids are using
their eyes and ears to find
opportunities to share Jesus.
They go places that we adults
don’t visit like the school
playground and cafeteria,

Beaten, Bruised, But Not Broken
Kids’ EE Changed Ukraine Girl Forever
I
n Cherkassy, Ukraine,
lived a girl named Yana.
Two words best described
her situation: hopeless
and helpless. Yana lived
with her mother—an
alcoholic; Yana experienced
more beatings than a “punch
drunk” boxer. Usually, the
beatings were so severe that
Yana needed rehabilitation
to recover. Yana’s world
was not filled with friends,
school, and activities.
Instead, violence, injustice,
and indifference crammed
her schedule.
The hard and cruel
nightmare that she lived
daily made its imprint
on her character. Where
thoughts should have been
turning to a bright future and
possibilities, there was only
bitterness and anger.
Six months ago, Yana
was raped by an older group
of boys. She ended up in
psychiatric care, battered
and traumatized.

someone in the care center,
Yana attended a Kids’ EE
camp. It was unlike anything
she had ever experienced—
like stepping out of a world
of hatred and darkness into a

8-13, has three main objectives:
The first objective is to win
children to saving faith in Jesus
at a time when they are most

is a key word

training uses
illustrations
and skits;
hand
motions, songs and cadences/
marches that add fun and
repetition to the Gospel
presentation; visual materials
and crafts. All of this is

dialogue between the adult
leaders and the children.
And everything is
grounded in Scripture. In the
Gospel presentation alone,
kids memorize 14 Bible
verses—and discuss dozens
more throughout the units of
study.

Why Does the World Need Kids’ EE?

Because Kids are the Future of the World

L
ate one night, Don and
Carla Thompson, Kids’
EE field representatives
in the Caribbean, received
an unexpected phone call.
Their 22-year-old son had
just been held up at gunpoint.
Their son is working his
way through college with a
Christian band called Crimson
Flood. While on tour, four of the
band members were robbed by a
17-year-old boy pointing a gun.
Minutes later, after calling 911,
police arrived in full tactical
gear and arrested 12 minors with
the youngest being age 14.
“God protected everyone
that night,” Don says. “No
one was hurt, but it could have
turned out much differently.”
Everyday, more and more
kids who long for acceptance
are finding it in the wrong
places—and a life of crime
ensues.
The Church must offer
the world God’s purpose and
direction for His creation. Kids’
EE helps kids in three critically
important ways: It wins kids to
saving faith in Christ, it clarifies
the Gospel for them, and it trains
them to become witnesses for
Christ.
For the past three years,
Don and Carla have been
teaching Kids’ EE clinics in
Trinidad, Barbados, St. Vincent,
and Guyana in the Caribbean.
They are amazed at the number
of passionate pastors, teachers,
and children who attend the
Kids’ EE clinics. During these
clinics they learn that the issues
in the Caribbean are the same
as in North America: Children
need a purpose for their lives,
they need adult role models in
their lives, and they need the
Church to embrace them.
Don and Carla are faithful
Kids’ EE reps who go wherever
they are needed to teach a Kids’
EE clinic. But their work doesn’t
end there. Following the clinic,
they nurture a relationship with
leaders, encourage them, and
assist them to implement Kids’
EE in their churches. Their
work is proving to be vital in
developing future Kids’ EE
leaders.
It is also proving to be vital
as a discipleship training tool.
Don and Carla encourage their
Kids’ EE leaders to mentor their
students throughout the training.
Leaders are also encouraged to
visit with the children’s parents,
and to pray with each child one-
on-one.
Don says that their goal
is to work themselves out of
a job, “one island at a time so
that indigenous leadership can
take over as soon as they have
been effectively trained and
demonstrate they are ready.”
“With 30 percent of the
world’s population under age
15, we must present the Gospel
to the future of the world, the
children, and equip them,” says
Don. “The world needs Kids’
EE.”

Diverse Continent Being Reached

Excitement is in the Air Over Impact of Kids’ EE in Africa

S
ince 2000, Elise and
Steve Stimpson, have
helped introduce Kids’
EE to 21 countries in
Africa. Currently, there
are teams of indigenous
EE clinic teachers in some
regions of Africa who are
teaching Kids’ EE.
Our goal is that every
family in Africa will hear the
Good News, and teams of
indigenous believers in every
region in Africa will be
teaching Kids’ EE clinics.
Our vision is to reach all of
the people groups as well
as the hard-to-reach peoples
of North Africa. Pray that
indigenous believers will
catch the vision for Kids’
EE, take the leadership, and
accept full responsibility
for their regions.
Egypt
Following the Kids’
EE Clinic in Alexandria in
August, 2006, the children’s
leaders taught Kids’ EE to
100 homeless children at their
church; and during on-the-
job training at a Sudanese
summer camp, they shared
the Gospel with 45 Sudanese
children. A young Sudanese
boy was moved to tears when
he finally understood the love
of His heavenly Father for
him. Countries in Africa with Kids’ EE

More than 3 Billion People Live on
the Asian Continent
And Kids’ EE is Shining the Light; One Person at a Time
O
ur heart is that every
child in Asia would
have the chance to hear
about Jesus. Not too
long ago, it would have
been almost unthinkable
that a kids ministry would have
traveled so deep into the hearts
of many people across Asia.
Asian believers see the potential
that Kids’ EE offers. More and
more countries across this vast
continent are being equipped in
Kids’ EE.
Myanmar
EE field workers are faith-
fully serving the Lord as they
reach out to victims of Cyclone
Nargis, a strong tropical cyclone
that caused the worst natural
disaster in the recorded history
of Burma (officially known as
Myanmar). The cyclone made
landfall in the country on May
2, 2008, causing catastrophic
destruction. By August, an EE
center had been established and
these field workers were help-
ing rebuild homes and sharing
the Gospel of Jesus Christ with
adults and also with many kids
who have lost their parents. In
Kun Thee Chaung Village, EE
field workers built a medical
clinic and a library. Many of
these field workers made com-
mitments to stay for one to three
years. Many Burmese have
made professions of faith in
Asia
Christ. In areas once closed to
the Gospel, worship services are
now permitted and field workers
pray with villagers on a regular
basis.
Hanoi, Vietnam
Hanoi, Vietnam’s political
capital, hosted its second Kids’
EE clinic. There were 23 clini-
cians who attended, 168 heard
the Gospel, and 94 of them
made professions of faith in
Christ.
One of the highlights was
the mentoring of three Vietnam-
ese associate Kids’ EE clinic
teachers who will be promoted
as Kids’ EE Senior Clinic
Teachers. Now EE Vietnam has
top quality indigenous Kids’
EE Vietnamese leadership. The
Kids’ EE materials are translated
into Vietnamese with excellence
and are now available.

Eurasia
Kids’ EE Developing Across Eurasia
Training and Encouragement is Making the Difference
N
adezhda Tyshchenko,
Eurasia Coordinator for
Kids’ EE, reports from
a recent EE leadership
meeting that Kids’ EE
continues its progress
in Eurasia. The ministry began
in January of 2002.
The only country
remaining in Eurasia without
Kids’ EE is Turkmenistan.
Please pray for opportunities to
plant Kids’ EE in this country.
There are Kids’ EE
materials for Sunday schools,
summer camps, and even for
children who are ages three to
seven.
Says Nadezhda, “The
ministry is developing actively
and with God’s help, it is
spreading in Eurasia. Right
now there are more than 196
churches actively involved in
Kids’ EE.”

Over a six-year period, Kids’
EE Eurasia has conducted 151
clinics.
“Several years ago,” says
Marcia Ardis, Director for
Kids’ EE in North America,
“when I first met Nadezhda
through email, she shared with
me that they had 43 Kids’
EE clinics scheduled for the
year. ‘Hungry, open, willing
to sacrifice to put the Gospel
first’ were thoughts that came
to my mind. In countries that
have been without God for
so long, He is there in the
midst of them opening their
tender hearts to the truth of
the Gospel. And the truth is
so good that kids can’t wait to
share!
“Compared to America, I
often wonder, ‘Have we had
God for too long that we take
Him for granted—and forget
Him?’”

ids’ EE was introduced
to Europe about six
years ago. The first
European nation to train
its leaders using the
Kids’ EE ministry was
Romania in 2002.
Following the training in
Romania, Kids’ EE expanded
into Belgium, Switzerland,
Finland, Austria, Germany, and
the United Kingdom.
The vision for Kids’ EE
in Europe is to equip kids in
all of Europe through the local
churches.
Goals:
• Establish Kids’ EE in Italy,
Poland, Spain, Hungary,
France, and Holland
• Translate Kids’ EE materials
into Polish, Hungarian, and
Italian languages
• Increase the number of
churches with Kids’ EE
to 100
Kids’ EE in Holland

coordinator for Belgium, the
Netherlands, and Luxembourg,
asked us to conduct the first
Kids’ EE training clinic in
Holland in 2006, and what
a great clinic it turned out to
be! There were twenty-four
participants from Holland,
Belgium, the UK, and Wales.
Two of the participants were
originally from Uganda and
one from the Congo.
The evangelical believers
in Europe reported that
many people in Holland
are spiritually blind. One
participant, who was first
trained in 2004, and had
implemented Kids’ EE in her
church, shared a testimony
of reaching children whose
families have come from the
Middle East and North Africa.
Their parents were having
dreams about Jesus at the same
time. There was even a very

in 2000. It has spread from

areas.
It is mostly used as
Sunday school material, but is
also often used in Kids Clubs
as outreach to communities
and Scripture classes in schools
to bring the Gospel into the
classes.
Kids’ EE is used across
a range of children’s ministry
areas engaging children from
preschool upwards. Adults use
it in their teaching programs in

classes, and holiday programs.

“Howell-ing” with Excitement for Kids’ EE
Local Leaders Finding Multiple Ways to Use Kids’ EE
T
wenty years of faithful
children’s ministry led
Shawn Howell to this
conclusion: he needed
something else.
His feeling was that
upper elementary children
needed high-octane, super-
charged, deep-level training and
discipleship.
Shawn learned about
Kids’ EE and attended a
Kids’ EE clinic. After 20
years of working closely
with kids, he saw something
different. He witnessed
adults excited and equipped
to train kids to share their
faith. More importantly,
he watched kids grasp the
Gospel presentation and
understand who they are in
Christ.
His understanding of how
kids learn was rattled like a
salad shaker. “It challenged
me and expanded the learning
possibilities. Here was an
educationally and philosophically
solid, biblically accurate, and
fun curriculum that church kids
needed,” Shawn says.
Difficult steps at first
Pumped up and ready
to roll with Kids’ EE, Shawn

brought the ministry back to his
church fully ready to implement.
He was stoked. His church
was not. “Understandably,”
he remembers, “the staff was
concerned about starting another
program. After all, the calendar
was already full of really good
stuff.”
The staff listened to
Shawn, and Kids’ EE began.
It wasn’t long before Kids’ EE
was worked into many of their
ministries like Sunday school,
Awana, weekly discipleship
nights, and vacation Bible
school.
Shawn used Kids’ EE
to train adult leadership how
to speak on a kid’s level. He
also took it a step further: as
a replacement for childcare.
Was he crazy or just creative?
“Instead,” he promoted, “provide
elementary discipleship and then,
occasionally, send kids with
parents during on-the-job training
visits.”
Suddenly, kids at
Shawn’s church began talking
freely about Jesus, who He is,
and who He could be to
their friends. Parents were
amazed at how God used
Kids’ EE in their kids lives
to bless those around them.
“Every adult that has
ever helped me in Kids’ EE
has said something along the
lines of, ‘I wish I had this
when I learned to share my
faith,’” Shawn says.
Now their entire church
is about the Great
Commission.
“Our church is excited to
be part of what God is doing
through Kids’ EE. We get to see,
firsthand, God’s fingerprints on
our entire church through Kids’
EE.”
